This scene is proof why Anne Meara was such an unforgettable actress. Rest in Peace!
Ironically she outlasted a lot of the kids who thought they were so talented. Paul McCrane, who played Montgomery, is one of the few still working. And Laura Dean, who played Lisa, the dropout, ended up on FRIENDS.
Leroy was and excellent actor and dancer.
R.I.P. 🪦 Anna Meara and Gene Anthony Ray
BREAKING NEWS: Anne Meara (Miss Sherman) passed away today at 85. Such a brilliant actress and this was one of her best movies playing the English Teacher we did not want to have. RIP
+Michael I. Haber That is sad, yes.
"Getto-blaster." LMAO!
That was kind of racist of her.
@@joel8583 "Ghetto Blaster" was the street slang for the radio he was holding. But the way she said it was very condescending. I did go to the current "Fame" school & had to deal with a prejudice art teacher a lot like Mrs Sherwood but worse. Same hair color & everything ugh
@@joel8583 stfu snowflake
Funny, as we called it that growing up in the Bronx.
The way she said it seemed racist. I know it was "of the time", but there was quite a bit of racism, Hilary calling Coco "black cherry," and dear in a condescending way, & talking about Leroy's "black ass", the Asian student with the glasses on was credited as "Oriental Student, " the way Ralph didn't use his Hispanic name except to be part of a "quota", Hispanic people also experienced terrible racism in reality. And the homophobic F word Ralph called Montgomery. I know that NYC, I'm a native NY'er was dark and gritty for real at this time, 1980, but still, it left me wondering, "who wrote this?" A lot of the dark and violent scenes , and nude scenes seem gratuitous to me. Am I the only one who thought this? The dance and singing scenes are ofc spectacular. Everything else seems old and dirty, the school, people's apartments. All of it. The lighting also.
RIP Gene Anthony Ray
She's terrific here.. stark and menacing.. Plus, I have a personal fondness for she and Jerry Stiller. My father was in a show off Broadway many years ago, and they made a special effort to go backstage afterwards to praise him.
In The Mickey Mouse Club Show, The Kids were told to study just as hard as they perform. If your Grades weren't up to par, your time on the show was limited. Very smart thing.
The later Fame t.v. series was definitely sanitized from the original film version. :)
@Ryan Akwar he's right, IMO...the movie is a lot more raw. They are both amazing!
lol yeah cause it’s a tv show, FCC and all
Anne Meara's FINEST role. Ben Stiller's mother could act her FACE off. ❤️👍
Leroy was fresh😂Paul McCrane looked soo innocent
When I realized that the sensitive gay student in Fame was played by actor Paul McCrane, I was thinking "That is ER's @&*hole surgeon Dr. Robert Romano???!!!" :o
RIP Anne Meara....
She was great.
I thought Anne Meara was very good in this film. Although referred to as a comedienne, she frequenty did drama in her career and was usually very good at it.
The hospital scene was very impressive.
Isn't that Ben Stiller's mom portraying the teacher?
Yep, Anne Meara.
My cousin was a mess Luv & miss him RIP Tony Ray #apt9kids
I'm just now recognizing her from Kings Of Queens
Did she say “ GHETTO BLASTER”?😂😂😂😂
That was a nickname for “boombox” in the 80s…
Yes, she did. She could have said Boom Box or radio. The word and the tone of a white woman teacher saying ghetto blaster with that scowl and tone def seemed racist. Idk if it was on purpose to depict institutional racism, or what, but I'd you see the whole movie in the lens of modern times, there are a lot of OMG 😱moments and language. Hilary the blonde ballerina called Coco "black cherry" 😱
Yaddayaddayooou if you can, can you upload the scene where Leroy cusses out Mrs Sherwood when she ask him to read? That's a very funny scene. Thanks for posting.
oh yes
and the guy who said he was a professional asshole
Dr. Rowes, LaGuardia English teacher. Very similar character
Fun fact: I used to live right next to the school on which the movie Fame was based (but at which it was not filmed due to the Board of Education not liking boobies or bad words).
I'm glad they didn't continue that clip 5 more seconds.
Isn't it amazing how "Mickey Mouse" has been used in Movies. Fredo wails about managing a "Mickey Mouse Nightclub" then on a Webseries A Man wondered what kind of a Singer Duquae is whether if he's a Mickey Mouse Singer, Miss Piggy Singer. How sassy was this fellow.
I always like older women Anne Meara was nice looking
She's Ben Stiller's mom
I always had a thing for te❤chers looking back on it Anne meara was a pretty woman when she smiles love those cheekbones when she is approached by Leroy and Shirley id take her out
Sadly, there are too many kids in school these days with the same attitude as Leroy. Everything's about Tick-tock or Instagram or Facetime, etc. the good solid academics just get in the way of having a good time. Ghetto-blasters have gone the way of iPhones but the dynamics are still the same. Thanks to our "modern" society norms, we are getting generation after generation of idiots - - - I could "of" had more fries at lunch!
Yep Leroy was a -Hood-in the early 80s but he was interesting at the same time
I'm surprised he wasn't arrested for destruction of private property or vandalism when he snapped that was immediate expulsion. I really didn't care for him and Sherwood wanted to help him but his Arrogance kept him down in the gutter
The actor who played Leroy died at age 41. He was HIV positive.
I know right. Some of The Alumni who attended HSPA were also on Soap Operas. Carmen Thomas who played one of Tad Martin's Wives Hilary Wilson (Langley Wallingford's Daughter), on All My Children was a Student there as well as Rachel Miner (Ex Michelle Bauer #2) on Guiding Light who also played Margot Frank in a Broadway Revival of The Diary Of Anne Frank with Linda Lavin (Mrs. Van Daan) and Nathalie Portman (Anne Frank).
Way different no than it was back then. Plus this is a tv show about a performing arts school.
0:30 “We killed you!!”
Do you think Gene Anthony Ray had the same attitude as Leroy? Is that the reason he got expelled from the real Fame school?
one of the older actresses on the tv show took him in. If I recall, he didn't quite have Leroy's attitude but he shared similar stories, some of which got written into the show, he was far more sociable than the character he portrayed but lived very much in the present and didn't think too far ahead. A little manic, a little depressive, a little too trusting and sometimes volatile.. in her mind, he longed to be part of a family, to make those kind of connections but he also, had trouble with drugs and gradually becoming one of the oldest members of the show as others moved on. She summed it up as he was a talent young man, that of course knew he was talented but insecure on other levels, too trusting and didn't have many skills to cope either with his mental health, stress or some basic life skills. friends and colleagues were limited in the way they could help him as their support network akin to now where it's still difficult to get someone the professional help they may need without being related (or sometimes, even when being related) but he was the functioning type and easily slipped thru the cracks.

Is the 1980 movie or the series ?
The Movie. Keep in mind that while the Actors who played Bruno & Leroy in the TV Version none of the Actors reprised their roles for TV.
It 's weird because i watched the movie and the series later and Ms Sherwood wasn't played by the same actress as well as Doris.WHy did they replace them?Didn't they fit the roles?
Many of them didn't want to I presume. They had hoped that they could continue in Movies and the like. The Actress who played Miss Sherwood is Anne Meara (Wife of Jerry Stiller and Mother Of Ben Stiller). Also many of them got cheated big time bad out of Money, Royalties. Irene Cara (Coco) Lee Curerri (Bruno). If you can try to find a Documentary on Fame and you'll hear some hearbreaking stories on how so many of them didn't live forever.
And needless to say, there are curse words in this movie. Especially ones that are not suitable for tv.
Not to mention nudity like Coco's infamous audition.
She would never be aloud to talk like that nowadays in a university she big kicked out for racism.
First, it’s a high school, not a university. Second, what did she say that was racist? “Ghetto blaster”? That was a nickname for boombox in the 80s.
@@egglady I think Jason meant because of today's woke and PC culture, she'd be accused of racism.
I wish teachers could still talk to blacks this way.
Someone should talk to your stupid a-- that way....maybe you won't be as ignorant.
I'm glad not everyone thinks like you do
Quando avevo deciso d'iscrivermi all'università e avevo pensato al D.A.M.S. ho visto il programma e ho pensato oh Madonna il programma noiosissimo della Florio no no
Ah the days before PC infected our school system
