Couple of things people are asking about: 1. The “wrap it up” thing was a joke I wrote/very much part of the bit. 2. They don’t mic the audience for most games industry shows, so you can’t really hear their reactions via video. You can in person!
With the audience thing it didn't sound like they laughed at any of your jokes and I honestly felt bad for you while I was watching. But I'm glad that it was a mic thing and that they were laughing when you made jokes, there's nothing worse than making a joke and the audience has 0 reaction.
Absolutely killer opening monologue. Immediately confronting the elephant in the room while recognizing the people who earned it most, all while splashing in some nice comedic moments. And yeah, the dress was fantastic as well. You should be proud.
You did not hold back in your speech! Thank you for calling out companies for their layoffs, and for acknowledging the hard work that you and other game developers do to create these amazing games.
Nothing gives me more joy than watching Alanah go from strength to strength, accomplishing her goals. As someone who doesn't really have a lot of goals or aspirations besides traveling (seriously all my goals are linked to travelling) and relaxing at home, it's cool to watch someone on the opposite spectrum. Awesome speech, Alanah. I'm looking forward to greater things from you. I remember you mentioning something about writing and directing another short film this year. Best of luck with that, and I wish you great health for the rest of the year.
Likewise. I'm a middle aged gal myself, 45, and beaten down a fair bit by life in general plus 2 bouts of cancer that has all but sapped the strength and will to do little more than survive at this point. But seeing someone like Alanah go from a very young woman (she was practically a pup, couldn't have been much older than 19 or 20 I think the first time I saw her online.. for the life of me I cannot recall where it was) to a grown, mature woman doing quite well for herself, achieving her goals and aspirations from the best I can tell and doing so with grace is strangely inspiring (I am not easily inspired by people who are so much younger than I). I look at her and say to myself "Welp, I couldn't achieve what I had hoped to when I was her age, but it's damn nice to see another young lady succeed at it and having the privilege to watch a portion of her life and all the big steps she's made and completed successfully thus far." Here's hoping to her continued success in life and achieving her goals, in happiness and health. 🙂
Hi Alanah, I would like to say this from the bottom of my heart. I love your discussions, thoughts and vlogs. I discovered your channel by watching an IGN vlog a few years back. Since then I have been watching vlogs on your channel. It makes my day watching your vlogs. You definitely remind me of myself as we are both into games and Anime. Me and my best friend always watch your videos and enjoy your podcasts. We appreciate your work. We always wanted to tell you this and this our way of saying Thank you for doing what you do. Watching your podcasts and listening to your insights on different games is really fun
Losing subscribers and getting hate because of showing skin is bloody wild. I know the internet is crazy but thats so stupid I can't quite wrap my head around it. Also I like the succinct speech, said what needs to be kept saying.
You were absolutely radiant at the awards show! Also, Please never apologize for prioritizing your health over content. I wish you nothing but good health and happiness in 2024 and your fans will be here to consume your content when your able and willing. much love ❤️
For most people, there aren't many occasions where you can dress up. I think we all should use those moments to the fullest. You looked fabulous in that dress!
This is so so so awesome. “Stock arrow must go up” attitude absolutely must end if we want to have any hope as a species, the 98% of us cannot work just for the benefit of the less than 1% at the top. Thank you for speaking on it at a big event when you had the chance
Alanah looked stunning, and the speech was pitch perfect - equal parts funny and cutting, with excellent delivery. Fantastic job presenting, you should be proud!
lmao the wrap it up bit was funny, need to add a little humor to dire things like the mass layoffs. The A symmetrical style of the dress was sick, a symmetrical done right can be such a breath of fresh air. What a great speech too, you'd almost think you write for a living!
I never understood people who said they felt pretty wearing something until I wore a suit for a wedding. Never felt so confident just because of wearing a piece of clothing. I totally get it now :D
WOW! really great speech and the dress.. absolutely stunning is understatement. never had any idea what was below the over sized seaters you usually wear intentionally(obviously). anyway wish you lots of continued success and hope you post more VLOGs when you are able too.
Yeah, honestly the best speech I've seen on a stage about games. Confronting layoffs from the get go and acknowledging the forces that cause them is amazing. Any other time that it's mentioned it feels obligatory or an afterthought and there is a clear drive to get past that uncomfortable sentiment. The humor was good and helps for sure, but you really nailed the most important part. We NEED to celebrate the games that were made especially when those responsible were let go! Game development is often a thankless job and nothing hurts more than even the company that paid you to make the game for them decides that they don't want to pay you to stick around. Praise from other developers is sometimes the only positive feedback you get for pouring your soul out for a game and it means so so much. Sorry for the book of a comment but your speech really resonated with me. Thank you for giving it!
Sven Vincke also laid it down later that evening, charging into the same breach. It was so refreshing to hear a CEO of a hugeley succesful gamestudio not mince any words and call out the greed and sole focus on stock value that is a detriment to creative output.
This was the speech everyone wanted to hear from at the VGAs. But I'm actually glad that you gave it, and gave it here, because I feel it gave the subject more gravitas and injected it with pure sincerity it most certainly needed. You did an amazing job!
Your speech at GDC was very well executed, gave me a good smile. I appretiate the eloquence you use when discussing matters relating to video games, and the industry as a whole. Especially during such a reactionary point that online media exists in right now. Level headed takes are a breath of fresh air. Also, you rocked that dress.
SO awesome seeing and following your journey from when i 1st found your other channel about 2012 or so . Love your passion your involvement in the game industry, Best wishes for all future to come
First time watching the GDC awards. I discovered it thanks to you, Alanah, and I must say it was a fun watch! Seriously, you were fantastic as host and killed it with the opening speech! Congrats on being the host! 👏
So freaking awesome Alanah. Doing what a couple of big names in the industry neglected to do. This takes courage and a lot of guts and I'm sure a lot of people will respect you for a very long time for this. Fully deserved.
Honestly, it's been such a ride seeing your journey from the first time you appeared on the Co-Optional Podcast to you hosting and giving such an honest speech. Keep killing it, Alanah.
I'm late to the party, but I gotta say, the beginning of Alanah's presentation was really great! No sugar-coating or downplaying what is actually going on (regarding layoffs). Kudos to Alanah, that was awesome!
It's been so awesome to follow you over the years. Your content is always so interesting and dynamic. Feel very grateful we get all we do from you when you not only have a full time job, but also have a condition that causes exhaustion (my mum has CFS, so I have a fraction of an idea how hard it must be). Love your stuff. Hope for many more years of it, no matter what form or quantity it takes.
OMG !!! Amazing speech ,irony, sarcasm, strong points, you tells the audiance exaclty exactly what they wanna hear . i would have much to say but no more comments ,you were just amazing!
Very good opening speech and you looked amazing in that dress. Love your insights into the gaming industry. And your awareness of body projection and it's impact is spot on..
Fantastic speech, loved how brutally honest it was, good to see you seemed to add a little aussie flair to it, the wrap it up was a great touch. You looked absolutely stunning. Keep up the great work, as usual great video.
This whole _topic_ that starts around 7:07 through around 12:30 where you talk about your makeup into your considerations for how to dress and your awareness of self and image and body is so important. Like, tbh, I wish it fuckin _wasn't_ as important a thing as it is, you know? But I'm very glad to hear you share your experiences with this each or any time you do it. It's a perspective that is so personal and like, kind of private (despite it being _about_ other people's opinions, technically), that many of us viewers/gamers/audience might not generally be aware of. It's freaking so lame that it's even an issue for you and countless other adjacent professionals, but I'm very grateful for your insight and willingness to discuss the topic. The "spatial awareness" of how we fit and interact with each other, and the things we impose on others around us is always important to understand and be empathetic about. And to better help each other police up the bad behaviors around us and in our shared social communities. I don't know if I'm articulating this well enough because I'm kinda up in my feelings about this stuff, but I just mean to say that I really respect and value what you have to say and think about in each of these topics, in this space of gaming and media and fun and art and our humanity. Cheers. Also shoutout left boob for enduring the squish in service of you rocking the dress _O7_ Your opening speech was fantastic. Well done.
You did an amazing job presenting. You discussed a real issue with the games industry, you looked absolutely fabulous, spoke very eloquently, plenty of good laughs from the crowd and you seemed very comfortable. Great work - they chose the right person... You rock!
Alanah, as someone who has a huge passion for games but was always told “oh you can’t do math or coding”, just don’t do game design, I was misled by my thoughts and others. you made me realise that passion is the most powerful tool of them all and now I am back to follow my passion, I got a freelance volunteer job as a game reviewer as a side hustle, and hope to enter the industry somehow. Anyway… You have contributed greatly to me not giving up on pursuing my dream of being a writer in the video games industry, which will hopefully one day come true. But the most important point of this message is, thank you for your kind heart and thick skin. You really balance it extremely well and I can’t believe your videos never lack substance, not a single one of them. I’m just so proud of you and everything you’re doing. Love from Sydney, Australia.
Dude you KILLED it up there Speech was fantastic, digs at the right people, the please wrap it up bit was great, sarcastic and funny all with a serious undertone deliverd in a great way all while looking stunning, you deserve all the respect and the position you are in and have inspired many others to start their games jouney, whatever that may be, kudos to you dude
Thank you Alanah for continuing to share your personal, moon-lit life with these vlogs :) I have followed you on and off since you were with Roster Teeth and have found your journey in the video games industry both inspiring and insightful. You have bravely moved from sunny Queensland to sunny California to follow your passion (and battled against the dragon of male oppression!) Please continue to write powerful speeches and entertaining video games, and know that you have fans in Australia who love you for being you
I love all the sarcasm! Im sitting here laughing my ass off at this screen, but it only got a couple chuckles from the crowd, which then made it funnier cause of how blindsided they were by the speech. But keep doing what you are doing, its clearly working, but also i get to live a lil vicariously through you since i wanted to get into game dev in school, couldnt keep up with the coding side of things, then didnt enjoy any writing classes even though it was easy. So its really nice to go down this rabbit hole of "what ifs" I did a portion of the things youve done, keep it up.
what a wonderful speech, straight for the throat in a disarming fashion, but full of good intentions and heart. corporate industry is reporting profits hand over fist and yet doesn't want to share it with the people that made it happen.
That speech was great. Thank you for making it in the place that you did. Who knows, maybe some CEOs woke up a bit more, but you definately made devs feel a little better. Im a games programmer, i wasnt laid off this year but I was when I was in QA a few years ago, it upended my life significantly. My heart really goes out to those going through similar right now, I promise as hard as things look at the moment, in the future you will look back from a much better place, like I am fortunate to now
As an Aussie software dev and gaming fanatic it always makes me smile to see Aussies doing great things abroad in the gaming industry! Congratulations and bravo for not taking the corpo approach and avoiding the awkward truth!
Great speech, Alanah! You and the GDC people turned a very down part of the industry into something that got me laughing quite a bit for a while. Killing it with the dress too. You're always a great host! May the industry improve for the better of all devs and players.
You do look very nice, and your speech was spot on. Development is a difficult process, and we are lucky to have dedicated artists like you and your friends striving to make the best games you can.
I first saw you on a retro replay playthough with Nolan North and Troy Baker. At first, I was like, who's this random guest? After that, youtube algorithms started showing videos of you at Funhaus. I liked the content, so I kept watching. Then, there was the start of the amazing PWL podcasts, then your job at Santa Monica Studios, then Banjo! It's surreal how far you've come since moving to the States. Always looking forward news, updates, content, and whatever other amazing opportunities come your way! Also, more speeches like that need to be heard and acknowledged! Great job!
You are one of my favorite people to listen to because of how wise and genuine you are. I can't tell you how to handle peoples obsession your look since im a dude but I can personally say you could look like The Elaphant Man and I still be here listening. Congrats on Hosting!
Couple of things people are asking about:
1. The “wrap it up” thing was a joke I wrote/very much part of the bit.
2. They don’t mic the audience for most games industry shows, so you can’t really hear their reactions via video. You can in person!

I didn't realize audiences were ever mic'd, I thought they were generally picked up by the stage mic. I can't believe I assumed that for so long.
@@Dylamn Most of the times they're mic'ed, but some shows fake the sounds (like in TGA, at least the first few versions, idk).
I heard a couple loud cackles, and that honestly makes it an absolute win.
Yeah, they mic them for most shows. Just not games industry ones because we’re BEHIND.
Absolutely killer opening monologue.
Immediately confronting the elephant in the room while recognizing the people who earned it most, all while splashing in some nice comedic moments. And yeah, the dress was fantastic as well. You should be proud.
but no one in the crowd laughed...

Wow. That was a damn good speech. Truth thru humor. Great writing and perfect delivery. Well done. Much respect.
Thank you!
God damn. I didn’t expect such a based speech at an award ceremony. You’re awesome.
Dude, I'm just sitting here trying to do my spreadsheets and nearly choked on my coffee.
Alanah has always been awesome
Holy shit that speech was awesome. Can’t say just how refreshing the frank, blunt, in-your-face honesty was. Appreciate you bein you!

This is so kind, thank you so much ❤️
Losing subscribers and getting hate because of showing skin is bloody wild. I know the internet is crazy but thats so stupid I can't quite wrap my head around it. Also I like the succinct speech, said what needs to be kept saying.
Damn, and here I am subscribing BECAUSE of that dress. (Jk, I’ve been here for a while. How sad that people are such prudes)
She rarely does so people are not used to it.
why would you lose subscribers? I thoughtbit's the other way around. Her body looks great why hide it.
This has me so confused.
Those people have massive insecurities. It's ridiculous, grow the heck up.
You were absolutely radiant at the awards show! Also, Please never apologize for prioritizing your health over content. I wish you nothing but good health and happiness in 2024 and your fans will be here to consume your content when your able and willing. much love ❤️
Thank you ❤️
The outfit was absolutely stunning. Alanah you looked great!
That is so awesome, congratulations!! You did such an amazing job
You gave a good speech, thanks for making this video about the experience of your participation
Such an honest, discussion of your appearance!
Full of your own spirit.
Thank You!
You're a rockstar! Really appreciate your voice in this space. Keep up the great work
Dude props, your opening speech was funny and heartfelt af in equal measure lol
For most people, there aren't many occasions where you can dress up. I think we all should use those moments to the fullest. You looked fabulous in that dress!
We loved having you as our GDCA host this year! Fantastic job.
You killed it. Thanks for making real use of your time on that stage, addressing what needs to be addressed. Glad to hear nobody made you sanitize it.
This is so so so awesome. “Stock arrow must go up” attitude absolutely must end if we want to have any hope as a species, the 98% of us cannot work just for the benefit of the less than 1% at the top. Thank you for speaking on it at a big event when you had the chance
Huge, huge respect for that honest and necessary speech. You are FANTASTIC.
Also you look like a million dollars. The dress is epic
Alanah looked stunning, and the speech was pitch perfect - equal parts funny and cutting, with excellent delivery. Fantastic job presenting, you should be proud!

What a nice, ballsy and down-to-earth opening speech, congrats!
Your speech was fantastic! Top tier! Not only a great speech but the fit is fire!
This speech was incredibly brave and balanced, killer job as usual!
Wow, absolutey drop dead gorgeous. Great work Alanah, good to see you go from strenght to strenght and still be so enthusiastic about your work!
Fuck, we need more Alanahs in the world. Excellent speech, you're a natural public speaker.
Dude, your explanation of the body type thing is spot on. I don't think that the public at large really understands that.
You did so well and looked stunning.
Hello beautiful Alanah!
I never understood people who said they felt pretty wearing something until I wore a suit for a wedding. Never felt so confident just because of wearing a piece of clothing.
I totally get it now :D
That speech was so good! Super happy for you, you did fantastic job!
Did great hosting, wonderful job.
Seeing Austin Wintroy was cool too .
WOW! really great speech and the dress.. absolutely stunning is understatement. never had any idea what was below the over sized seaters you usually wear intentionally(obviously). anyway wish you lots of continued success and hope you post more VLOGs when you are able too.
8:51 This was very enlightening and your self awareness improved my perspective, your generous insight is appreciated
Thank you and stay strong 🤙
Great speech, great dress, great work.
Yeah, honestly the best speech I've seen on a stage about games. Confronting layoffs from the get go and acknowledging the forces that cause them is amazing. Sven Vincke also laid it down later that evening, charging into the same breach. It was so refreshing to hear a CEO of a hugeley succesful gamestudio not mince any words and call out the greed and sole focus on stock value that is a detriment to creative output.
I agree with you, games are art and because they move and you have control that makes them fun, they are both art and fun !
Great speech! You hit the nail on the head talking about the layoffs but damn, that bit about games being an affront to god was hilarious 😂
Alanah, you're really good at what you do. And this is the best $32 dress in existence.
Thank you ❤️
This was the speech everyone wanted to hear from at the VGAs. But I'm actually glad that you gave it, and gave it here, because I feel it gave the subject more gravitas and injected it with pure sincerity it most certainly needed. You did an amazing job!
Serious balls, everything you said. Love it. Thanks for doing that!
I legitimately didn't know the "please wrap it up" was a joke lmao
Says a lot about the state of award shows haha
you crushed it though, legitimately
Your speech at GDC was very well executed, gave me a good smile.
I appretiate the eloquence you use when discussing matters relating to video games, and the industry as a whole. Especially during such a reactionary point that online media exists in right now. Level headed takes are a breath of fresh air.
Also, you rocked that dress.
That's awesome Alanah keep up the great work you do 👍 and hope you're having a blessed and Happy Friday ☺️🙏❤️
Honestly one of the best monologues I've heard from a host. Really well done!
I have crohns so can kinda relate to the flare ups, am off my feet at the minute. You fucking crushed that speech, good shit
SO awesome seeing and following your journey from when i 1st found your other channel about 2012 or so . Love your passion your involvement in the game industry, Best wishes for all future to come
You and Larian's CEO both gave great speeches. The wrap it up joke was a nice touch as well.
First time watching the GDC awards. I discovered it thanks to you, Alanah, and I must say it was a fun watch! Seriously, you were fantastic as host and killed it with the opening speech! Congrats on being the host! 👏

man, your opening speech is so on spot! (and really applaud you that you faced this head on and tell what the world/other people needs to know about)
Hammered that! You're actually a huge inspiration for me pushing through for goals despite the things that make it not so. Thanks
You're great and one of the best regarding gaming content on RUclips, value your opinion a lot. :)
Glad you made it (as you say).
I really appreciate how candid you were in this video.
Great monologue as well.
Also you looked stunning on stage.
OMG !!! Amazing speech ,irony, sarcasm, strong points, you tells the audiance exaclty exactly what they wanna hear . i would have much to say but no more comments ,you were just amazing!
Really proud to just be following you. Honestly: you are such a boss LoL Awesome work.
Very good opening speech and you looked amazing in that dress. Love your insights into the gaming industry. And your awareness of body projection and it's impact is spot on..

What a wonderful speech, absolutely blown away. Congratulations Alana. Knocked it out of the park.
You did an amazing job presenting. You discussed a real issue with the games industry, you looked absolutely fabulous, spoke very eloquently, plenty of good laughs from the crowd and you seemed very comfortable. Great work - they chose the right person... You rock!

They did laugh, you just can’t hear it on the stage mic. It’s fine in the room.
You're incredible, Alanah! Well done. And you crushed it with the dress and your whole look, absolutely beautiful.
Your ability to say yes and try things outside your comfort zone is aspirational. Way to crush it!
Love your humor in the speech! Your great Alanah!
Wonderful speech! I was very impressed how you kept it light and funny while really hitting the points others would shy from.
I was in the audience for this, incredible speech and energy! Awesome job
Thanks so much!
what a wonderful speech, straight for the throat in a disarming fashion, but full of good intentions and heart. corporate industry is reporting profits hand over fist and yet doesn't want to share it with the people that made it happen.

That speech was incredible. Loved it. (Also that dress was incredible and I want it)
Great speech, Alanah!
You and the GDC people turned a very down part of the industry into something that got me laughing quite a bit for a while.
Killing it with the dress too. You're always a great host!
May the industry improve for the better of all devs and players.
That dress was amazing. you looked stunning.
Alanah, you are such a legend! I hope your speech is taken to heart and future speeches on platforms such as GDC will take after yours.
Alanah you're making waves in the video game industry wow another great event to add to your portfolio
Great job!
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
Your opening was a ballsy move and I've nothing but respect for saying it. Speech was phenomenal as a whole.
