    I swear you have the best no bs, straight to the point, analysis of the Sharks on all of RUclips. Please keep doing what you're doing.

    It's heartbreaking watching Pickles's decline, he was a defensive force to be reckoned with for the Sharks for a lotta years. I remember when he started as an apple-cheek youngster who looked like a junior high school player, but one who could lay the body into a hit.
    If he returns and still plays like a boat anchor, the waiver wire would be the only alternative to him gracefully retiring, which is what he should do in that circumstance..

    Hey Professor,
    That is a good point about the waiver wire. I can't recall the last time the Sharks waived someone? It seems to me that one of the by products of stockpiling prospects and draft picks is that your roster is going to be impacted for the foreseeable future with a steady stream of prospects pushing their way up through the system and vying for roster spots. It is a problem that the Sharks have rarely had to tussle with in my memory but, something that seems likely in our future going forward.

      The Sharks did waive a couple players during the preseason, like White and Poturalski, but they just aren’t really notable names. For a player who could actually be picked up, it’s been a bit yeah.

    So Prof, with the ascendance of Askarov, what do you think of the rumors that the Avs are looking at Blackwood? What player could the Avs offer in return who would fit?

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  2 дня назад +1

      I don’t think the Sharks would take back a player, probably get either an OK prospect, or perhaps a third rounder or so

    Honestly, I dont really mind losing players such as Kostin, Benning, or Grundstrom on waivers, obviously it is not ideal, but in my eyes it just helps with the log jam that the roster has.
    In my eyes, it is more valuable at this point to see what we have with Bordeleau, Gushchin, Thompson, and Mukhamadullin, Than keeping any of those other players on the roster.
    I was really hoping that Rutta would be playing a little better so he could just be an early of the season sale, but that does not look like it would be the case. Gotta be Benning who is sent down though I would imagine

    I feel like we knew this was coming when we signed every warm body in the summer. We would basically be losing AHL talent with not much upside. The real bummer is not being able to even pick up an asset for any of the ones waived or lost. I think some creative use of the LTIR may be in play when it comes to a couple of the candidates. We all know that there should be no way Toffoli, Wennberg, Grandlund and one of the goalies play out their contracts here. It's really just a matter of when and how much can we get for them.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 дня назад +2

      I think the guys the Sharks will end up waiving don’t have the best trade value anyway.

  • @MrVisde
    @MrVisde 2 дня назад

    My hunch is we’ll see more creative use of IR to carry more than 23-guys on the roster (remember G Smith disappearing last year from Dec-March with an ambiguous ailment?)
    Or, maybe Grier expedites a trade for someone like Sturm, Kunin, or Ceci to open up space on the roster?

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  2 дня назад

      I think a trade would be optimal, but I don’t how many teams are excited to pick up defensemen from the worst team in the league haha

  • @jborchel
    @jborchel 3 дня назад

    It would make sense I think to reform last year's most effective line, Granlund, Ecklund, and Zetterland. That would make the next line, Wettlund, Tiffoli, and Grushin. Perhaps Smith instead of Wettelund. Put Smith with some better speed and scoring and he might be an improvement over Wettlund. Take you pick on which line should be first. Maybe respect Tiffoli and make that line #1. Why not? We need to do something to get more offense!

    Whatever happened to our first pick in the second round? Will he get a chance to play some nhl games?

      He had shoulder surgery a few weeks before training camp opened. He is still recovering but I don’t know the timetable for his return.

    Hey Professor, I never look up the Sharks post-game interviews. How is Grier handling the Sharks play so far? Is it those bland "we need to be better" cliches, is he angry, or does he seem to not care?

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 дня назад +2

      I’m pretty sure we’ve only heard from him in his press conference a couple of days ago, he didn’t seem to be too upset about it yet, at least not as much as last year.

    For me it’s pretty easy. Grundstrum and G. Smith are dime a dozen players. They don’t do anything that players like Kostin, Kunin, Goodrow do better. I’d much rather see Bords jump in and see if he can pick up where he left off.

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 дня назад +2

      That’s fair, whether it’s Grundstrom or Kostin who gets sent down, it doesn’t really bother me.

      @ponyboy9765 3 дня назад +1

      @@professorhockey Little edit for me. I commented before watching the whole video. I think you have a valid point with Kostin/Grundstrum. Kostins celling is probably higher but he’s definitely more unpredictable. Either way I doubt either of them factor into the sharks lineup past this season. I think Grier was just trying to bring in anyone with potential and seeing what sticks kinda like he did last season. I imagine this coming off season will look similar although the free agent class this year is supposed to be pretty good so maybe we get a few more Toffoli type signing. The defensemen carousel will probably also look a bit better next season especially if Vlassic is bought out which at this point he probably should be.
      I think the next off season defense really needs to be the focal point addressed because we need to have more than fringe NHLers filling it. If I’m Grier and I get even a moderately good offer on Ferraro I’m taking it. I know he’s definitely a “heart and soul” kinda guy but he just doesn’t really serve a purpose. I said this before a few years ago. He doesn’t really hit hard, he’s not very good on defense, he’s not good offensively he’s just kind of a warm body.
      But I’m getting way too ahead of myself. Let’s just get through this season first 😅

    Yoooo… you can’t just waive 44. That would be mad disrespectful lol

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 дня назад

      Yeah I’m very doubtful it would ever occur, simply that from a purely hockey perspective, it would make the most sense.

  • @sempcast

    The younger guys connect with Grundy, Klim Shady is a coin flip or higher to be grabbed on waivers. I think most likely it’s Bordeleau in for Givani Smith. Mookie could spend this whole year in the AHL and they can make room for him next year this offseason. Burnzie off the books this summer, so they may choose to buyout Pickles final year too this offseason! 🎉

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 дня назад +1

      I am under the impression that they really want to get Mukhamadullin some NHL games this season. Also, I don’t think it’s necessary to buy out Vlasic’s contract, it will only have 1 year left this offseason, and the Sharks don’t desperately need the couple million it would save them for that one year.

  • @hoochiemantwinkletoes
    @hoochiemantwinkletoes 3 дня назад

    Can Vlasic even be put on wavers? Doesn’t he have a no move clause?

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 дня назад

      From what I understand about the contract, he had a no move clause until last year, where it changed to a modified no trade clause. So I believe he can now be waived.

    • @CLew9
      @CLew9 3 дня назад

      It has changed to a modified no trade clause of three potential trade teams, but in either situation he needs to give consent to being waived

    • @professorhockey
      @professorhockey  3 дня назад +2

      Do they need consent? Goodrow also has a modified no trade clause, though with a 15 team list, and he was waived by the Rangers without his consent.

    • @CLew9
      @CLew9 3 дня назад

      @@professorhockey That's a great point! It's actually likely a player just needs consent if it's a full no move clause, and I had the modified no trade clause wrong. The wording between puckpedia and a sporting news article I looked at maybe it unclear since they had different answers

    • @sempcast
      @sempcast 3 дня назад +1

      I can’t see them doing Pickles dirty for the optics. I wouldn’t mind them buying him out though. He’s played 1,000+ games in teal.. that’s insanely impressive. I can’t argue against them retiring 44 after Jumbos jersey # with that long of a career & loyalty to the franchise is unprecedented!! 🥒
