    Thank you for the tour. I am from Northern California, where we DO NOT have canals and narrow boats. But a fascinating glimpse aar an unusual lifestyle, and I love the view of England from the canal system..and of course I love your humor. Thanks for the tour.

    Only a few days into your channel and I've learned so much, most of which I had no clue about. I've known Oxford has canals from watching the Inspectors Lewis and Morse, but didn't know the rest of the Britain is crisscrossed with them, that's just one of the many new things I've found out.
    I had to comment now because you have just answered a question I've had for a long long time. Forever I thought a Quid was a monetary unit consisting of part or parts of a Pound, .75 or 1.25 something like that. Now I find a Quid and a Pound are the same thing!!!
    Thanks so much for clearing that up for a rather slow American.
    I've really be enjoying the channel thanks, for posting.

    Brilliant. ... seems you already are doing tours....Bravo! That's smashing! love the ladies energy and their lively boat. Absolutely adorable cats. I do query though if there is any issue over security on the boats or canals. I haven't heard anything mentioned. How do they ensure they are safe and their boat, of course not giving any secrets away. more the general topic if security. Thanks for sharing. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Cheerio! Have a Beautiful Day!

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  8 лет назад +3

      I don't know how they do it; most boats have locks front and back, with additional bolts and metal bars and big padlocks. You have to be sensible to moor near other boats for company (or away from them if they look dodgy - some of the crime comes from other boaters, alas)

    Hello from Arightpest the proud owner of the canal boat called belly button moored in sunny/rainy Derbyshire. You would be most welcome to come and have a poke around a very unusual boat as i am told it started life designed to be a steam powered boat but things never workout as planed. Many people say its one of the most unusual boats on the cut and i am very proud to live on her/him. If this as intrigued you have a quick look on the web and put in a canal boat called belly button and i show up on a few web pages. if you would like to come and see her/him let me know. all the best Arighpest.

    Well it certainly took you a bit of time to finally post this video, since we know when the visit actually happened, but I really liked the format. And obviously, the professional edit. I think that this is a winning idea, poking about on other people's boats, especially if you can find ebullient personalities like Anna. I might also note that you seemed really excited, too, to be going socializing. Unfortunately neither Munchkin nor Alice seemed to be ready to perform.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  8 лет назад

      No, it took me about the same as it takes to edit any other - about a morning, all in. I had other videos lined up to publish before this one though. There is, in fact, a schedule of sorts.

    I must say I do prefer their boat layout, much rather have the saloon/galley at the business end and the sleeping area at the pointy end, not keen on the walk through khazi though. Plus I also like the semi-trad stern (not their cruiser stern).

    • @MrSheckstr
      @MrSheckstr 3 года назад +1

      Reverse style is more ideal for social cruising, while traditional seems ideal for solo as you right by the bathroom or bedroom to get or get rid of something really quick. I think if I had his I would have a essentials locker right there to reach down and grab hats gloves, boat cloak, protein bar, bottle water etc

  • @MisterFuturtastic

    Thanks so much for sharing this, this is really fascinating! I was curious about something, is the width of your boat the maximum you can have in the canal waterway? Also, the boat looks very heavily constructed to handle buffeting I guess you could call it. Is this common for all boats this size in the canal?

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  8 лет назад +3

      It's the maximum to go anywhere on the canal network. The canals in the south and north are wider and you get widebeam "narrowboats" up to about 12 feet. But all the canals in the Midlands are narrow, so those with bigger craft are stuck in the south or north unless they move it by road!!
      All narrowboats are pretty solid, as you say because there are bumps and scrapes etc. Typically 10mm baseplate, 6mm hull sides, 5/4mm cabin sides and roof.

    How do you fall into a canal 1 3/4 times?

  • @WolfHeathen
    @WolfHeathen 7 лет назад +2

    Imagine what it would be like if the canals were privately owned. Everything from parking to mooring would cost you half a fortune no matter where it was located. Perhaps a charge per hour at a mooring spot? There'd probably be a fee on how long you've sailed and some BS environmental charge and some more fees on top of that. Water would be £5 a gallon and even walking on the towpaths would probably cost you as well due to wear and tear. See the parking fee as a donation towards, and appreciation for, the maintenance of the canals you enjoy every day for free. It is a socialized system after all :)

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  7 лет назад +4

      I already pay an annual licence fee for the boat of almost £1,000. I think I make my fair contribution.

    • @WolfHeathen
      @WolfHeathen 7 лет назад +1

      I wasn't sure if there was an annual charge or not. Then again, £1,000 is way cheaper than I though it would be compared to owning a house.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  7 лет назад +4

      My council tax was about £1,000 so it's comparable.

  • @profzen1

    Nice I love cats. I agree with the car parking charge as the revenue is needed. Plenty of free parking nearby for those who are prepared to walk 5 minutes.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  4 года назад +1

      I saw no alternative parking, all the roads around seemed to be too small and residential use only. I don't disagree with them earning some pennies but a day charge only when you might want only an hour or so is rather inflexible.

    OR, is it something altogether different?

      Porta Potti is a trade name, I think, but they're similar to a cassette in principle but the entire base of the loo comes off rather than you extracting a cassette from within.

    • @CruisingTheCut

      Me neither but it happens quite regularly yet the cats generally seem quite OK, paddling to the boat and hauling themselves out on the fenders or similar. Amazing really.

    • @CruisingTheCut
      @CruisingTheCut  6 лет назад +2

      There are vertical ventilation shafts at intervals along the length. Even so, if you're following a smoky boat it can sometimes be a bit fume-ridden.

      No. I love animals but I don't know what my future holds so I can't guarantee a pet a home & I won't take one on unless I know I'll be able to keep it.

      I'm a fan, I am viewing early on with your videos. I'm an American and loving the experience you have given all of us. But, I'm trying to understand the cost from what you relayed in your videos and relate that to how narrowboat owners earn revenue to support their narrowboat life. I want to present this as an honest question.

      Hi
      Lots of jobs these days can be done remotely (as the pandemic has, sadly, shown) - design work, programming, writing, admin, book-keeping etc.
      Some boaters trade from their boats (ie to passers-by) though this can tend to be more a lifestyle / hobby income than serious monies.
      For jobs that require attendance at a specific place, boaters would generally be advised to take a permanent mooring and commute from there, treating the boat as a static, albeit floating, home.
      Many also simply keep moving every two weeks while trying to remain within the vicinity of their job but this runs into problems of potentially breaching the continuous cruising rules, see this video ruclips.net/video/k_p70h-Rxps/видео.html

      Thanks. I am starting your youtube vlog from the beginning. You mention not working, so I assume you have early retired or based on your response now, sought work elsewhere? So, that's the reason for my question about income. I see there are many ways to afford a narrowboat, I was just confused about your comments early on about not working and sometimes you say you have work to do.
