I really enjoy your videos. Always very helpful in understanding different aspects of CB's and the different antenna setups and various other things in relation to them.
Thanks so much for this video. Just got a 980 Bearcat and wasnt sure how to power it up, as it will be a base station. Going to try the little Radio Shack device and hope it works. Cant wait to get into single side band.
Thanks for the info on antenna information. Watched a bunch of your videos I actually own that hard to find Radio Shack antenna in perfect condition. It came off the roof when my wife back in the day and I split up, had my brother hold it for me for probably 19 years.
Hey Eric. Great videos! I just picked up the RS 10a power supply. Little pricey @$50 but you’d expect that these days with the price of everything else. Keep up the great videos!!
Thanks for the update Erik. I have always ran radios in my mobile but, thinking about a base myself ! Looks like you may have shelved your video plans for one of your projects! Dog Gone IT , I wanted to see that TOO ! Thanks for what you post , enjoy it !
No problem. I haven't given up of the other thing, But a VERY bad apple was trying to make my life miserable, so to protect my rear, I've had to back off. It sucks there are some really mentally ill people on the internet, but it is what it is. You should defiantly get a base setup! I'd say I use my base station setup 5 times as much as my mobiles. With a little luck you'll be chatting it up with some hidden locals you didn't realize were out there in no time. Although I have an actual base antenna (Antron A99) you can make one out of bare wire for less than $30.00 that will work just as well.
Thanks Erik. I will get that going soon. I was reading some of the comments and that guy was definitely trying to stir up some crap for sure. A real troll! Good luck and keep posting!
Watts always amps X volts. 10 amps at 12 volts is 120 watts. Even an unmodded SSB (AM 4watts/SSB 12 watts) will only use a tiny fraction of the available 120 watts. Yes, I know there is an additional load just to operate the equip. aside from the transmit power, but it isn't much. A 10 amp power supply is more than enough to power any CB ever made.
Man, wish I could go back in time and pick up those cheap power supplies. Crazy how much prices have increased on power supplies (and everything in just a few years.)
I have a cheap power supply in exactly the same metal case, but the 15v S-450-15 version. Paid £16.99 delivered in the UK, from a UK seller. As the voltage can be adjusted +/-10% on these power supplies, the 15v model is easily tweaked to 13.8v, which is likely a little beyond reach of the 12v models..
Still using the old battery with a charger connected to it and vent the battery properly. Unless you're in a super tight confined space, the battery vapors shouldn't pose a problem. Using a 30A power supply is a great way to go unless your AC circuit's amperage can't handle the load.
I have a uniden bearcat880 peaked and tuned swingin 14 watts and a comet 350 3 pill kicker what would be the best middle ground workin man powersupply for me to pick up ive been wanting to get one for a while but don’t have enough knowledge about all the different power supplies out
Usually these (mobiles) are supposed to be run/tested/adjusted on 13.8v, and while the Rat Shack PS with the cig.lighter adapter is mentioned as 12v, it's glimpsed on the front of it to be 13.8v.
Just ordered a Ameritron SPF75MV Power supply. And a ranger RCI63FFD4 , Converted , Peaked and tuned ,400Watts RMS 500w peak. Going all in with 100' of LMR 400 FLEX Cable. Including a 6' and 3' for the bench. I have the Radio Shack Shakespeare fiberglass Pole Still from back in the day in mint condition. But I went ahead and ordered the Solarcon A99 With ground plane, Just a have all new. Oh yeah almost forgot I still have my Radio Shack 4 Watt bass station from late 1980s to.
I was thinking about getting the 955 Stryker and hooking it up to my solarcon 18 ft antenna the power supply is still in question what do I need to get as far as a power supply to run this radio properly it will be tuned to about 80 Watts or so I was looking at a power supply that is adjustable up to 15 volts I have a 10/2 wire running from a 20-amp breaker from my house to my out building that's the power to the out building
I run a semi trucking detail service, kinda an in between before reselling them. I have 4 different CB Radios so far all had mic, mounting bracket. 1500 watt power inverters, copper wrapped antennas. I am wanting to set up a home base and wondering about coax cables? 18 to 36ft? Car battery uses? (If even a tool)?
You can use any length cable. I have an 80 foot run to my base antenna and it works great. The battery will work well also, jut get a $10.00 trickle charger for it and it will always be ready for you.
Do you have an inexpensive option for adding a cb with pa for my alarm system? I already have the external alarm speaker but would love to have a pa system that would allow me to talk to people outside of my home while utilizing my existing speaker.
So, if I buy a new CB like a pres McKinley let’s say from Walcott or whatever and have them peak it, I can’t use a 3A power supply? Should I buy it stock then?
I have a Cobra 148GTL-DX CB radio that belonged to my parents but it hasn't got a power lead and I don't know if it was plugged into the mains or had a 12 volt cable for a cigarette socket. I'd like to put it in my vehicle . Would you be able to tell me if I would have to get a mains power plug and plug it into an inverter or can I get a 12 volt lead and plug it straight into the car ? I,m in the UK but I know that when my dad got this unit it was illegal in the UK but is legal now but I don't know what the ampage is on it at the moment untill I can find the manual that came with it.
Fairpoint Farms 2 questions. Can you run 2 pieces of equipment on one amp?? Looking at a 30 amp pyramid power supply. Or is it a separate power source for each item. Like a cb radio and linear! And would a 30 amp pyramid power supply be not a good choice for a mobile cb? Got an old cb with ssb but thinking of buying a peaked and tuned galaxy 979. Thanks Dave
As long as the total power requirement doesn't exceed the 30amps you should be fine running more than one thing on it. A mobile (stock) radio should draw only about 3 to 5 amps so you would be fine running two of them off one power supply.
Hi my friend. I enjoy your videos And I just subcribed to your channel. Thank you for sharing your knoledge and good work in helping us understand a little bit more on how to use our CB radios. I just have one question.. I just ordered a Uniden PC78LXT 40-Channel CB Radio (With SWR Meter) & BC15 Accessory CB/Scanner Speaker and I wanted to ask .. Good evening. I am looking to hook up my over 40 year old Sears 23 channel mobile. I like the idea of the 3 amp regulated power supply. My CB has a red and black wire coming out of the unit which I would match with same colors on the power supply. But I see an in-line fuse on your set up. Is the in-line fuse necessary?

Did you say that 19 amp box was plenty to handle anything under a hundred Watts say if you got some kind of a power booster anything under a hundred watts would be fine with that
Hi i am new in this hobby,i want to ask you what power supply can i use for my Galaxy dx 959 how much amp for the radio. PS: My English is no to good an I apologise for that.
That radio probably uses a 3 or 4 amp fuse, so a 5 amp power supply is easily sufficient. Don't listen to this idiot, 20 amp. And that way you can get a non switching power supply so there's no chance of unwanted spurious noise.
Man, you sold me a few videos back on the idea that I need an SSB unit to put in the house. But you keep saying you find them for 35 bucks and...man...Amazon and Ebay keep saying different. Where are you finding these SSB radios for the numbers you are saying?
Thanks for the great video! As a novice willing to learn and create a cheap set-up, your advice is higly appreciated!

Okay Sir I’ve got an old 23 channel Base station and I’m thinking about setting it up in my van as a mobile. Will it work?
The base station CB radio is damaged but the Power Supply does work.
I want to use the Power Supply to supply a mobile radio. CB radio.
That will work! Just wire the power supply output to the input on your mobile.
How does the power supply actually connect to the CB radio? Do you have to twist bare wires? You didn’t really show any of the connections.
There are terminals on the power supply, you take the wires and connect them.

Sounds like your amp draw is too low. You’ll need a higher amp drawn power source (check ebay) to produce the right amount of power
Did you say that 19 amp box was plenty to handle anything under a hundred Watts say if you got some kind of a power booster anything under a hundred watts would be fine with that
Any clue where I can find that 19 amp since radio shack isn’t around anymore?
Haha
How do I splice the wires on my new CB to a 110 outlet plug?
DON'T! You'll need a 110 to 12volt converter box. I have a video on them, but you can get used ones on Ebay for less than $15.00
Lmfao
@@syren1913 ...I Plug my CB into my dryer 220 outlet ...I was Really shocked at the outcome! ...Now me and my CB Really get distance!!
How big of a pyramid power supply do you need for a Ranger N4 radio
Hi i am new in this hobby,i want to ask you what power supply can i use for my Galaxy dx 959 how much amp for the radio. PS:
My English is no to good an I apologise for that.
A 20 amp power supply should be fine.
That radio probably uses a 3 or 4 amp fuse, so a 5 amp power supply is easily sufficient. Don't listen to this idiot, 20 amp. And that way you can get a non switching power supply so there's no chance of unwanted spurious noise.
the 30amp
can handle 360 watts. I just bought one after seeing this video
Some switching power supply can produce interferences, i making now linear PS.
Thanks Eric
So 4 years later is that $12 “ugly duckling” power supply still working?
it sure is, well worth the money
@@FarpointFarms thank you, I’m a recent sub. Really been enjoying your content
How do I hook it up
Hi can I use a 10 amp cb on a 4 watt cb
Yes you can 10 amps is more than enough.
Thank You!
You're welcome!
Man, you sold me a few videos back on the idea that I need an SSB unit to put in the house.
But you keep saying you find them for 35 bucks and...man...Amazon and Ebay keep saying different.
Where are you finding these SSB radios for the numbers you are saying?
Uniden 980ssb is something like $120 on the low side.
This one came up with a search of your videos for 2970 stuff, comment for the algorithm!
Thank you sir!
2:04 - ebay $50 new old stock, March 2023, plenty on ebay
3:03 - Ebay $50 new old stock, hard to find.
Times certainly have changed!
RadioShack never made it, lol. Blast from the last!!!!
Hey Eric Is the Pyramid 5 Amp Power Supply (on amazon) ok to use? Will the FCC shut you down with that one??
Base station has more noise filters
Question ?
new to channel
Welcome aboard.
I've gotta stop reading some of these comments, I can feel myself getting stupid.
Would this work for hooking up a Cobra 19 ULTRA 3 base station hook up using a Cobra 19 ULTRA 3 mobile CB radio?
Won't that hut the cb that only has a 2A fuse inline? I'm confused.
Can I use an old laptop charging cable?
12 to 14VDC at any amperage. the radio may only draw 2 amps and that's OK you can apply however many amps you have it won't hurt it.
