    "'Ook,' he explained. 'Ook!'" Is my favourite Terry Pratchett quote. I don't remember what or to whom the Librarian is explaining, but it's the most genius line of writing in the history of the English language. I often think of it when my nephew is talking at me about back end programming.

    Capes, cloaks, and hoods have only been out of style for a little over 100 years, which is a dent when compared to all of history.
    I wish mainstream clothing stores would bring them back and sell them! They could be a staple of modern fashion!

      Somehow, I think they've gained more acceptance as more folks start historybounding. Particularly as less people have to dress exclusively business-casual for office environments.

    How do you stay warm in the winter? Well, as a "woman of a certain age" I carry my own personal summer around with me. (Of course we don't get nearly as cold in the deserts of southern California, so if we wear socks with our sandals we do pretty good.). Actually, a hood seems like a good idea, since it's always windy. Thanks for the inspiration to get medieval on the weather.

    • @MaireColclough

      Ahh, the portable heater that is hormonal change. At some point mine will kick in and I will alternately annoy and thrill the husbeast (with how cold the house is compared to the lower heating bill) 😂
      I think a linen, cotton, or light wool hood would serve you well!

    I am in Edmonton and I have also suffered through the weather here. For the -40c weather hood, maybe interline it with thinsulate, I do this for my ear flaps of my knit hats. That will keep it wind proof and you won't need to use such thick and unwieldy fabric. Also line it with fake fur.

    I looked at this...and decided I would make the following adjusting:
    Not just a caplet- but full or half sleeves with zippers or snaps along the underside. I am forever needing extra warmth or coverage in those spots.
    Deeper hood- as larger melon would require more space.
    Neck cover inside
    Ok so basically Frankenstein the patter to something of an experiment

    • @MaireColclough
      @MaireColclough  2 года назад +7

      I'd recommend trying it as-is first. The hood is actually quite deep. I had to fold back the front edge. I used the largest size, but probably could have gone with a medium or small in the noggin, and large around the shoulders. So a mockup is probably a good idea! 🤔

    Lovely hood! I'd love to make one, but being in Manchester, UK, we get more rain and wind (we're in pre-spring rainstorms and expecting a week of rain, then a break and more on-off again rain/gusts for March/April) than snow, so a hood just wouldn't work under a raincoat hood, and I've knit enough shawls, scarves, hats and gloves to last a decade. I'll probably make one eventually, though, just to see how it looks. I gave you an immediate like for the Pratchett quote - I love his writing.

    Hello from a fellow Southern Alberta resident. This winter has been. . .interesting hasn't it? You're not joking when you say it's hard to know how to dress. I'm mostly a house-mouse year-round, but I have to go outside every day (except on those bitterly cold days. . .then hibernation is called for) to walk my dog and. . .yeah, sometimes knowing how to dress is a real challenge. Layering is good, but it's not always clear what to layer WITH. Put something on, and you're too hot, take something off and you're too cold. Grrr. lol Spring is the same way, though. It's not uncommon to either be the one, or run into other dog walkers feeling the same way, that you've always over-dressed or underdressed.
    YOu are right that the hoods are actually awesome. I've been learning to use mine more this winter (I've never been a hat person and have been training myself to use those more too. :P). Any time the wind comes up, we seem to lose SO much body-heat from the back of the neck and throat area, even if wearing a hat. Pulling up your hood seems to make a MASSIVE difference, especially with those winds blowing across the snow. Love what you've done here. It's perfect for this weather. :D

      Hello! I'm also in Chinook land :) I'm hoping we won't need our winter wear for much longer. Although mud season isn't much better. My big complaint though is the wind. I have so many lovely dresses and skirts and I always have to layer leggings underneath or I risk being a less sexy Marilyn lol

    Not to mention our usual Southern Alberta May blizzard. I have this pattern and was thinking it would be perfectly perfect for our Chinook days. I run pretty hot, so inside a pair of home-knit socks is usually alll I need. Outside, a knit headband, a pair of knit gloves and - for some reason - a nice pair of home-sewn cotton leggings under my jeans. Then I’m good down to about -15, which is as cold as it gets once in a blue moon. Oh, with a -*-really-*- nice winter coat. I’ve learned you get the best quality (if not the prettiest) in sports- or outdoor stores, and if you’re plus-sized you’ve got a *lot* more luck in the men’s side of the store (bonus; their sleeves are long enough, they’re tight in the hips, not the belly, and they usually come with a *lot* more nice functionality than the ladies’ versions. :)

    On the rare occasion it's cold enough (or my body's dodgy thermostat actually starts working for a while) that I need a winter coat, it's a Herjolfsness #63 I treach for, or one of my cloaks (covers my backpack as well as the rest of me) and my medieval hood. If my hands are feeling the cold (this happens more often - poor circulation) a friend has knitted me four fingerless gloves with pull-over mitten pieces for the fingers (and separate ones for the thumbs) using up all her brightest ends of yarn. Because they don't match each other, so long as I can find one left and one right, I'm good to go.

    Beautiful. I love how it came out 😍 I'm in Arizona, you ought to be asking me how I keep cool. Any real winter weather doesn't usually last much longer than a couple weeks. Though this year mother nature has been ping ponging back and forth between winter and real winter. Usually we get 2 weeks where we have to cover our citrus tress (maybe) then its flip flop weather again. So during those 2 weeks of winter, you can find me bundled up in a hoodie and a blanket sipping on some hot chocolate curled up with a good book. 😉

    I live in Australia so for most of the year it is either boiling or temperate. However, winter in this part of the country is wet and bitter, with southerly winds right off the Antarctic, and well. Australians have never heard of insulation in their houses. My Canadian friend who grew up Manitoba always complained she has never been so cold how how do we all sit around in 3C during the day.
    As it is dealing with wind, lots of layers, the outer one densely woven. Gloves. Remembering to turn on the heater when it falls below 6C

    • @MaireColclough
      @MaireColclough  2 года назад

      The one thing I've learned is that there are different kinds of "cold". There's dry cold (have a hot chocolate and you're fine). There's damp cold (you will never be warm ever again). There's stinging cold (put on a hat and mittens. Not gloves. Mittens) and biting cold (you need a windbreak for your winter jacket). 😉
