- Medlar and quince are two fruits I (Gail) have always wanted to grow; but will they survive the harsh Scottish climate? Watch their progress from bare root sticks in the autumn to, hopefully, thriving trees in the spring!
Living in Scotland in a 300-year-old country house. This is a record of our life renovating an historic house in Scotland and using our land as a homestead to enable us to live as sustainably as we can - almost off grid!

I live in SE Oklahoma on land that has an old Quince Tree Orchard. Every spring our yard is full of pink and white blossoms from the still surviving trees. The orchard was planted some time back in the late 1800s to help feed the livestock through the winter. The birds, squirrels, chipmunks and deer clear our trees and ground from the fruit every winter. I am told they are a member of the pear family and that the fruit was also used for making jelly. I hope your trees thrive and serve you well every spring when they bloom.

Quinces are really good for jelly making. They contain tons of pectin. Jo don't need to use store bought pectin if you have quinces in hand

@@SylviaR.1971I bet if you Google it you will get tons of information about it. I used to work in an open air museum with houses from the 1700s upwards and we had ladies who showed how to process them and in the end they made so called quince bread from the leftovers. Took a lot of sugar to make it but it was a kind of early gum bears Like Haribo back in the days. A special treat only for Christmas I was told. Sadly my kids didn't like it. Try Google quittenbrot, German of its origins
I love my Quince tree. I make preserves from mine and when they are ripe, they are the best tasting fruit that is so juicy and flavorful.
At 3.07 I really thought Gail was going to come out of the shed saying "Today mostly I have been eating......" (Fast Show style).

I’m glad the fruit trees survived the winter. I have a peach tree that sprouted from a peach pit in my vegetable garden 2 years ago and last year I got 2 peaches from it. They were small but so tasty.

Your Quince and Medlars look very healthy ! Generally it is best if you allow bare root fruit trees to grow for 2 years without producing any fruit. That way the tree's energy is focused on developing strong roots . If it does flower and fruit in the first two years, remove the young fruit before it fully develops. I have a small apple orchard and when the trees are all blossoming in spring it is a beautiful sight. Your property looks like a painting come to life.
You're such good cinematographers! The opening shots were just stunning, I love the ones of the shwoos in the foreground with that gorgeous Scottish Borders sky. I've never been across the pond, but when I see video and pictures of it, something deep in my heart feels it calling to me. My ancestors are there, I've always had the feeling that's where I'd end up. I hope it really happens some day.
The opening segment of this video is the best one out of all your videos you have produced. Those glorious trees, the stunning views of the landscape (looked like your drone was in action Alex) absolutely beautiful! The shoos were in their element. Great pic of your lovely, solid mansion. Beautiful. Quinces are delicious baked in the oven on an oven tray and when cooked and soft served with cream or ice cream.
When I was a youngster I would ask “what’s for tea ?” My mother would often say “frogs legs and cat’s medlars “!! In other words ,wait and see.!!! Love,Jo.xx

It’s always so satisfying to watch plants and trees grow successfully. A real sense of satisfaction. Your trees look like they’ll give you years of fruit. I’m just setting up new garden beds for winter veggies and flowers. Watching them grow and harvesting their produce is something to look forward to. 🙂🥬🥑🫛🌽🥕🍅🍋🥔🧄🧅
There's nothing better than home grown fruit and what you can make out of them. I love that you have chosen unusual fruits. Variety is the spice if life after all.

Wow! Quince! I love that fruit. I grew up eating quince in Chile. The fruit is not very juicy, but if once you pick it from the tree you smash it against a wall a little (not too much) and you sprinkle salt on every bite, you just might think you are in heaven. It just tastes that good! 😊

We planted a medlar here in northern France and it's just gets better every year, the fruit yield is amazing and makes fantastic jelly. Good luck with yours.
Loved seeing the beautiful Fall 2023 landscapes… gorgeous!! Never heard of a Medlar tree , but my mother-in-law had large Quince shrubs & we made jelly from the fruit. The flowers of her quince were lovely!! Absolutely enjoyed seeing you at the Fair and your display of crock’s & jewelry were outstanding!! Enjoy both of your channels soooo much!! A German family friend sends us a little box of quittenbrot (quince bread) every year at Christmas. It's quince puree half dehydrated, cut into little squares and lightly coated with coarse sugar crystals. I always look forward to it.

People tend to look at billionaires, athletes, actors and call them successful people but I'm convinced that if life success is even a thing, then it's the people like you who's got it. Doing something unique and amazing, building a cozy home, having a community around you is what's life is about in my opinion.
Also I knew you were doing crafts, but your booth at the market blew me out of the water! Your banner was amazing, something straight out the "I Spy" books which I love. Do you have a 3rd channel dedicated to crafts, or do you make these amazing things in secret? :O

Medlars are delicious, eaten only when very brown and soft…they taste like a tangy jam…

Man shwoo’s tail is starting to come in beautifully, he’s such a handsome boy, I loved seeing his gorgeous coloured plumage while he was sunning himself on the wall.
Your Medlar and Quince trees are doing really well. I’ve had quince jelly with roast dinners, it’s so tasty and Medlar jam is yummy too. Maybe it’s something you could sell at a later date as it’s quite unusual to come by. I’d definitely buy it from you, especially as it would be organic and handmade by yourselves, it would be another way to support you lovely ladies.

I used to have several quints bushes. They're best used for making jam.

You may have planted them too close to the stone wall as both of the mature into large spreading trees. Both are used for making clear jellies. the medlar requires "bletting" on straw before it is processed.

Hello girls nice to see the trees doing well ,i have a small garden and every year i plant peas just for the colour ,i use marrowfat seeping peas ,you know the ones you buy to make your own mushy peas ,one box probably costs a quid and you easily have five or more years out of them they never fail try it in your vedge plot
In the north of Spain, we have quince trees everywhere.. When they are young people cover them in winter to make sure the frost Don, t damage them... We pick the fruit.. It, s very expensive.. And peel it, separate the seeds or the middle and put it in a muslin bag and put the quinces to cook and the bag too.. The pips help the yelly form to make quince jam.. You add sugar and when it is made you take out the bag with the pips.. It's called Membrillo... And it is eaten with cheese all year round.... You don, t put it in jars, more like big uppers and you cut pieces to eat... Good luck... And the quince peels are good boiled in water to stop gastro interitus... It works. There are a lot of uses for this sour fruit.

In the US we call them Apple-Pears. Its a common fruit option for school lunch. It tastes mostly like a pear but has the crunch of an apple. I’ve never seen anyone make jam out of apple-pears but it is also not something that I find grocery stores carry. I think I would prefer the jam over the actual fruit, but if you have a chance I would definitely try the fruit. 🍎🍐
Also I wish I were there so I could patronize your craft shows but as I am in Florida I miss that opportunity. But you guys are fabulous and so creative.
