- In March we traveled to Virginia Beach and had the opportunity to dine at some of favorite regional restaurants for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We loved the food at Sunnyside Café, Rigoletto Italian Bakery & Café, Repeal Bourbons and Burgers, as well as Murphy’s Irish Pub. We want to share with you those experiences.

At just under half a million residents, Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia and is located on the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. While the sunrise over the ocean was breathtaking, it was very cold and windy. The reason for our visit during this time was so we could witness our Joella conquer her first half marathon during the Shamrock Marathon Weekend.
Virginia Beach has a beautiful shoreline that meets the water with a family friendly atmosphere and is a favorite during spring break and the summer months. There is a long concrete boardwalk along the beach and lots of shops within a short stroll. Fortunate for us, the city is also home to a flourishing local culinary scene, giving us an opportunity to have some excellent dining experiences during our stay.
Open for breakfast and lunch, Sunnyside Café and Restaurant is run by a New Jersey family that takes an extensive American-style menu and mixes in seafood twists along with spirited drinks. Their ingredients were fresh and their execution was spot on.
On the south side of Virginia Beach is a family-owned venue called Rigoletto Italian Bakery and Café. The ancestry hails from Naples, Italy and uses recipes handed down from generations to turn out incredible pastries, cakes, paninis, pastas & breakfast. Although we experienced a fantastic breakfast, it is their authentic sandwiches that landed them on Food Network’s Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. The tasty treats and meals this place turns out is no joke.

Back near the boardwalk, a speakeasy vibe restaurant, called Repeal Bourbons and Burgers, turns out food and drinks that are out of this world. They strive for the ultimate bourbon & burger experience by using exclusive Mid-Atlantic ingredients, including local mushrooms, free-range eggs, vegetables, and fresh herbs. House-made Korean kimchi, bourbon chili, and award-winning burgers are mated with small-batch liquors and handcrafted cocktails. THIS is how you celebrate the end of prohibition.
Traditional Irish food and entertainment is brought to the beach community at Murphy’s Irish Pub, a family owned dive that offers hearty, ethnic meals. Whether you gather around their huge fireplace in the winter - or on the lively outdoor patio in the summer, you can dive into great eats while enjoying live music and a wide selection of brews and cocktails.

My favorite RESTAURANTS were Chi Chis and Captain George in Virginia Beach in 1986. I wish Chi Chis was still around,.🍻

Always a fun place to visit. It's very laid back and much less dramatic than places like Miami or NYC.

I havent tried any of these places but am heading down next month and will most likely check out Repeal and Sunnyside! Ive had Murphy's but it was their sister restaurant in Alexandria ( really good, old irish pub feel!)
My all time favorite was the legendary Raven on 12th and Atlantic but unfortunately, after 52 years of loyal service, it was razed for a parking lot by a hotel across the street that purchased it from the owners. It was a great down to earth place with amazing food, cheap prices and a cool, oldschool bar vibe

@@criscale3667 Baja Cantina has the BEST fish tacos, pembroke pizza has the best chicken carbonara subs, Calz suicide wings, Rick's cafe is an absolute gem, I could go on for days!!! What areas are you looking for and what scale of dining experience?? I can recommend so many great places!! I currently live 4 hours from the beach and I can also recommend places all over Va! If you make a trip towards Waverly you can get Cowlings for the best bbq! Hit Mrs. Rowe's in Staunton va if you want a fantastic home style meal and pies that rock this whole world!!
