It’s funny that you brought up Death. 2 of this band’s members played on Death’s Human a few years before this album came out. And yeah their lyrics are usually based on oriental theology so you basically interpreted this song correctly. Cynic was probably progressive death metal when this album came out, but prog metal is the best descriptor for them overall
I'm very surprised they picked this one over Veil Of Maya or How Could I for you guys. Veil Of Maya is like the quintessential Cynic song, it seems like. And How Could I has such a great outro piece. You have to do both eventually. Personally, I'm a Traced In Air kinda guy, so something off of that album would be great too. It's the best middle ground of their older, heavier stuff and their new, softer stuff. There are some more Hindu-related lyrical concepts for you to check out, as well (ex. Adam's Murmur, The Unknown Guest). And people have already mentioned the Death connections in the comments. So, I'll just throw another Lack Of Comprehension request into the hat. Btw, I usually think of space when hearing the "weird" parts of this song, not an impending stabbing lmao.
official cynic channel here on yt released a video for their "veil of Maya". like a tribute to their fallen brothers - Sean Reinert and Sean Malone. and even chuck Schuldiner (from Death) can be seen there. you guys should check this video. its so nostalgic

Genre? Progressive Metal Free Jazz for sure. And yeah, try their song "Sentiment". Maybe that one isn't that confusing for you guys. ;)

What is the Problem here to find the Genre ?!? :) - Cynic Focus opens the Door for Progressive Jazz Metal - step into this Door and you enter a new World - same Door you can enter with the HUMAN Record of DEATH
They were a very early progressive death metal band and pretty influential (Obscura covered one of their songs for example). Their recent stuff is pretty different
I once saw someone tag it as Breath Metal, and I liked that a lot, seeing as Paul will engage the audience to do synchronized Yoga and Breathwork together, lol.

Do you remember Living Waves by Persefone? Cynic were geniuses and pioneers and I saw them live twice. The drummer Sean Reinert passed away few months ago.

Good music doesn't have to be constrained by being confined to a genre - nor should your enjoyment and understanding of it. Fwiw, I would say it was Progressive, with elements of Death Metal.
Not just with y’all but people people in tune with perspective and perspective not seen I am a person who searches but walls don’t alow me to enter places where I must compromise to have thoughts herd
Atheist, Spiral Architect, Watchtower, Spastic Inc, Blotted Science, Control Denied, Obscura, Pestilence, etc. Theres only so far i'll go with the progressive metal/fusion as far as post 2000 bands because they all start to copy each other. Cynic could never top their first album Focus. Spiral Architect only made one album which i think is the best out of all these bands. I'm glad they stopped there because its just one of those albums that cant be topped.
