  • In Vedic times people not only cremated the dead but also buried them. The Vedic Rishis however, have always regarded cremation as the best method for disposing of the dead body. In this video we take a look at the powerful reason why this is so. The answer has been provided to us by Swami Abhedananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna in his book "Life beyond Death". @A K bro it's just a matter of science and nature....every organism in the nature should die and should become a part of the soil...and the same body after getting decayed, becomes a nutritional source for plants and trees and thereafter again human beings or animals consume those plants as food...this is a natural cycle...in this part there exists no soul....you may ask a question that where would our soul goes then...there is nothing like soul,etc....asking such a question is just like asking where does light go after putting off a candle....our consciousness is just a process which is being supported by various organs and body mechanisms...so after our death this mechanism stops and the body is considered dead... that's all..

What about animals? They are never cremated in nature. What about cavemen that lived thousands of years ago? Even they were never cremated. Nature has its own ways and decomposition is actually good in a way. All the components return back to the soil. If it would have been difficult for the soul to move on while the body is still not burned but left to decompose then nature would never have made it that way...

    • @Spiritualbee
      @Spiritualbee  6 лет назад

mind in animals is not developed enough. Mind in man too is evolving. As greater truths are discovered by mankind our practices also change. Caveman had no spiritual or material or scientific development. All these came later, so our view points about many things has naturally changed as a result.
Cremating and destroying the body makes it easier for the departed soul to let go of its earthly life and adapt to conditions in the afterlife. When Yogis discovered this truth, they recommended cremation. In the Vedic period in fact, both cremations and burials used to take place. Later as truths about the afterlife became more widespread in the general population, it changed almost completely to cremation.

religions are just like lanugages, food habits, dressing - all based on the respective climate, nature
practice of burial - in desert regions where no water bodies below is safest.
where as in places like india - where we end up finding water 6 foot deep, the decomposing body, germs can get passed to nearby water bodies and spread illness.
with lot of trees available during earlier stage, it was trees available. now electrical burning is the best practice to follow.
throwing the body into river is more dangerous than burial. ( even if partly burned etc. )
most preferred wood is from mango tree which produce enough heat. aswell as its sustainable. (easily grown)

Freelance Developer Cremation is better than burial ONLY for us ordinary souls caught up in Maya. This rule does not apply to free souls such as Sri Ramakrishna or Shirdi Sai Baba. What attachment do they have for the body? They could throw it off at the slightest wish. They preferred Samadhi because the bodies of such sages become the store house of great prana shakti which is very beneficial to the rest of humanity. So their pure bodies if buried have the power to influence and help many people.

Ishtalinga Dharane as practiced by Veerashaiva Lingayitha Dharma is placing your Athman inside Ishtalinga. Anga ( body) becomes Linga. Soul is expected to live in body but with a clear consciousness of its separation from physical body. This comes with practice of Panchacharas and Ashtavarnas as described in Siddantha Shikamani and descriptions in Vachanas. With this Sadhana by ones end of life Sadhaka is expected to realize athman and should be in a position to enjoy this material world performing service to mankind using god given body and able to attain Lingaikya ( merge with supreme Paramathman) at will beyond dimensions. Here soul do not liberate the body immediately but realized soul continue to be in body for rendering service of the world with compassion of all beings, make betterment of the lives of all in this journey. Upon final demise, Prana leaves and athman also leaves with purity of that supreme consciousness. That is the reason in Veerashaiva Lingayitha Dharma , the body of the person who have practiced in perfection of this yoga is buried in the form of Linga shape keeping their Ishtalinga on their palm in drushti yoga pose and respected with final rituals in the burial ground, their body is not cremated as per Veerashaiva Lingayitha Dharma

*What is better, cremation or burial?*
Lets leave Cremation or Burial aside for a while. I ask you, will you allow your loved ones to become food for scavengers like dogs, hyenas, vultures etc? Most will feel horrid and disapprove. Next I will say what if we leave the human dead body away from our eyes in a jungle enclosure to become food for some scavenger. I still expect a lot of disapproval, that whether in front or away from our eyes, getting our loved one torn and devoured by scavengers is awful. Right?
But have we ever realised what happens to dead bodies under the soil, away from our sight? They become food for beetles and maggots, apart from releasing a lot of toxins and gases in the soil.
Are we willfully preferring beetles and maggots over vultures and hynas and dogs?Actually we are "inadvertently" making our loved ones into food for micro-organisms and insects, without ever realising this.many ancient cultures, both systems (burial and cremation) are prescribed, but cremation is considered a superior method. Why? Read on.
The ancient easterners had long analysed that body is empirically composed of the 5 elements - viz - earth (minerals), water (80% by weight of us is water), air (gaseous components), fire (body is continously generating energy which is symbolised by fire) and Ether (a media that transcends and pervades the entire universe).
So they thought, to 'properly' end the body, we must process it in "the fastest possible way" to "disintegrate" and "escape" into its basic emperical entities. Any other method, which is slow, subjects the dead body of the loved one to abuse (like being eaten and consumed by maggots).
Also, the theory behind choosing cremation cannot be understood in isolation. We have to understand the eastern theory of Transmigration of the soul. The soul changes bodies like we change clothes, unless it achieves Moksha or Nirvana. This cycles of transmigration into variois births is called sadgati in Sanskrit, which, at its extreme maturity, culminates into Nirvana or Moksha both of which mean liberation from a cycle of births. The eastern time is cyclic (it repeats), in contrast to Abrahamic timescale which is linear, wherein you (the soul) comes from somewhere ( I don't know from where), spends a lifetime on earth, dies, rests somewhere (I don't know where it rests), and then its given an afterlife of perperual indulgence or perpetual damnation or suffering, based on what God judges on a judement day. (Nothing repeats). The Japanese Zen theory says, we (the souls) are waves upon the surface of the ocean, such that, while always being part of the ocean, we (the souls) get a "transient" existence and identity, till we merge back into the ocean. Here, ocean is that supreme God or supreme power or supreme consciousness, and the wave is a soul or your conciousness, the act of merging with the ocean is Nirvana or Moksha. So, our real identity is our consciousness (actually called Turiya, which merely means 4th state), and a corporality or body is of no real importance. Its like a cloth which the real us (our self or soul or conciousness) wears for a lifetime, then discards to find a new lifeform (a new covering or cloth)
Now since the body left behind has no value once the soul leaves it, the first thing is to remove any and all attachments with the dead body, which was never the real self. This is followed by rituals which symbolise the "detachment" of the family members with the departed soul, allowing it to move forward to its onward journey (sadgati) , towards a new life in a new body (or Moksha or Nirvana as the case may be, depending on the acts and deeds in past lives).
Detachment is an important concept in Eastern thoughts. A soul gets faster and easily detached with the body which had housed it for one full life term. A cremated body looses all form and tangibility very fast. And hence it becomes easier for the departed soul as well as family members to get "detached" with the lifeless body.
Many will find it horrific to see their loved ones burn during Cremation. Its like torturing a loved one. But such feelings arise out of attachment to the corporality and a false sense that the Body is of any permanence or the body itself is the true identity and true self. The body is lifeless and has no sense of pain when we burn it. Many religions and cults preach that a burried body will resurrect itself with bones and flesh intact on some judement day. All such notions lack depth of understanding. Whether we cremated or bury, the body simply disintegrates and decomposes. In Cremation, there is fast disintegration into its constituents - viz - earth, water, air, fire and ether, and the body of the beloved departed is not defiled by insects or animals. In burial the body is consumed by various bacterias, maggots and beatles, under the cover of the soil, and it finally, after a long torturous decomposition, is left mere bones. Such bones are often dug and used for occult practices, believed to recall and control the deceased, to gain superhuman powers.
Any lifeform which dies, the act of decomposition starts immediately. The cells in the variety of tissues of various organs stop getting any oxygen. Blood circulation stops and diffusion of gases at cell level is curtailed. The cell's cytoplasm retains the carbondioxide, and becomes toxic. The lyzosomes inside the cell, break their membrane in a toxic cytoplasm, and thus release their extremely strong digestive enzymes. These enzymes from the burst opened lysosome digest the cell itself, and then continue to digest other cells. The resultant toxic fluid of this rampant internal digestion turns the body blue (unless it is kept in ice). Micro-organisms within our body, also start eating the body inside out. All these actions result in toxic effluents (which are enzymes) and building up of gases. The body swells due to this gas and gives a very repulsive odor. This odor attracts external micro-organisms, maggots, flesh eating beetles, small and large animals to eat the body. Burying a body saves it from not being eaten by large animals but small animals and insects find their way to the body in a grave too. As the body decomposes, a lot of toxic effluents (digestive enzymes) start oozing from the eyes, nose, ears, private parts or any holes made by maggots. These are very strong enzymes. They mix with the soil and severely decrease its fertility. Plants near a self-decomposing body start decaying itself. Even after many days of the end of self-decomposition process, plants do not grow in the vicinity of a dead corpse. Gradually the soil regains its fertility in few weeks and the plants can regrow. So this is what happens in a burial.
In addition to the above, a burial uses valuable earth for decades and centuries, which otherwise could have been used for cultivation or other uses. Apart from this burial involves masonary and construction, which has very high carbon footprint. Burial also promotes attachment to the body, which, if we think deeply is, impermanent and perishable. Detachment is important. We need to move on and accept death as a reality.
Some may say, I don't mind a maggots eating my loved ones. It makes their body useful for something. For that, I woukd6 suggest, apart from severe toxins effused inside a grave during burial, we are just giving preference to maggots and beetles. The Zoroastrians, just like Hindus, understand that the body is not the real Self. So they also have a good way to give back to the nature "without discrimination". They take their dead and hang them on a tree in a jungle, where any and every scavenger, "without discrimination" feasts on the dead body. Vultures, kites, hawk, mest eating birds, hyenas, jackals, foxes, rodents, maggots, all eat without discrimination. Isn't it better?

Its not about the dead. All dead animals get no burial or cremation. They get consumed by bacteria, maggots, kites, Vultures, crows, scavenging animals, "without discrimination".
It is all about the loved ones who, the dead leave behind.
*Tell me, if it doesn't matters, will you throw your dead parents or wife or sibling ib a gutter or out in the open, for scavenging animals and birds and microorganisms to pluck and bite and tear their flesh?*
If it doesn't matters to you, then I announce right here that you've won over me.
But if does matters, then would you give preference to maggots and rodents and bateria and other microorganisms to "eat" your loved ones in a grave, over other forms of scavengers?? And why (reason it).

I have a question about if the soul would remain ‘trapped in the middle zone’ if an organ transplant had taken place before cremation. As these organs are ‘alive’ in another body, does the soul remain attached to these different organs in the recipient’s body, or does the recipient’s own soul take over, allowing the dead persons soul and mind to reincarnate into another life form, even though parts of its last body are still ‘alive’?

While you say that the swamis and ancient rishies favored cremation.....my observation is that typically godman(s) and swamis are buried in India rather that cremated. To name a few include ...SAI baba in SHirdi,Satya Sai (Puttaprty) and many others who choose to take samadhi via burial (rather that cremation) to exit their current body!

Manish C Yes it is true that Great Yogis who have attained union with God such as Swami Sivananda etc are sometimes buried, but that is because they are FREE from the cycle of birth and death, free from earthly desires which trap ordinary humans. The bodies of such Yogis are full of prana and they continue to emit these vibrations for many many years thus benefiting many people. This is not the case with normal people who are still trying to attain to God consciousness.

Thanks. That is what I want to understand. The implied meaning of your above explanation is that cremation is for common man while burial is for super beings (irrespective of the underling reason). If I extend your argument further,it implies that cremation is a mechanism to get rid of the existing body and transition to the next one while burial is for those who seize to exist (immortal individuals-who are not born nor die any more). This lead to a conclusion that cremation is an intermediatory process and thus appears to be inferior to the process of burial-which as per your comment gives opportunity for (atleast the holy) souls to continue their existence on earth (for the benefit of others).

    1. Cremation is actually worse for the environment. Burial is better for the planet and thus elementary
    2. It's cheaper to bury. You would run out of space because within a few years, you can reuse the same graves, plus India is a massive country
    3. If the body does when the soul leaves, the relationship between body and soul ends, plus if reincarnation is true, the soul would have moved on. Thus the idea that the soul get attached to a body in a grave is not sensible. Plus, burning the body turns it into ash, but it still exists in ash form.
    4. Embalming is not necessary. Also if burials are so bad, why was is done in the past. Does that mean those people wanted to torture the souls of the dead?

This is why I prefer burying for myself, I know it will take a while for me to detach and in these days everything is so quick. They can not wait weeks to cremate. Various offerings are made on the thirteenth day to ensure a happy break from the attachments of the departed atma(soul) with its recent life and allow those left behind to get on with their daily life. That empty space hopefully to be filled by their personal commitments.

Similarly many Veereshaiva Lingayiths go to Samadhi along with their Ishtalinga , leaving physical body because ANGA already became LINGA. Please do not go thru bias here. Does it mean all veerashiava lingayiths take long time and become ghosts. With Ishtalinga on the chest , already the soul is realized with body and mind when Ishtalinga Puja and dhyana is performed daily.

You don't have any evidences to support what you are saying. Yet you are so confident and you explain the greatest mysteries about life in a very simple manner. This is the advantage of being a theologist. Science needs explanation while you people can just cite the literatures of Rishi-Maharshis and act 'like a boss'.

+Saurav Gautam One does not blindly accept Vedanta simply because some Rishi in the past said it. The teachings of Vedanta have been repeatedly verified (just as today's scientist verify by repeating the experiment) by several great minds throughout Indian history to this very day. That is why these teachings are accepted as true. So to say that only material science is scientific, but Vedanta is not a scientific process is a fallacy. Its all right to be skeptical but one must read and understand Vedanta before blindly dismissing it as an unscientific process. If you read you will find it highly logical, consistent and rational. Moreover it is only Vedanta that says that don't accept its teachings blindly, but to verify it for yourself by developing our mind.

A simple question!! How can you verify what happens after death?. Have you asked the dead about it? Please share your research papers. I would be very interested to know about how can one have conversation with dead people.

+Saurav Gautam Dear gaurav dont u knw that science establish the fact about material things as science entered in other realm it rely on uncertainity principal,
2-even scince theory starts from certain preassuption and after proving the theory they also satisfy that preassupted fact too, because in order to search for truth we hav to start from certain point even we hadnt prooved that, because it initiate the search for truth and for ignorant person like us these theory may be itiating the journey towards truth.
3-in science we get the objective knowledge and in dharma we try to get subjective knowledge through our own experience so for subjectivity of knoweledge all research paper r in vain even many research Lab go and see the work of Dr. ECCLES,SIR CURIAL BURT,W H THORPE and especialy ZUNG work.
