    In my years as a tree surgeon and orchard renovator, the Silky's are a God-send. Silky and Leatherman are a perfect bugout combo.

    I have been using an oak frame bow saw made in the late 1800's for the last 35 years and it would hands down put all this junk to shame. Happy camping!!

    Bob Dustrude Buck all the way! I've carried and used it the backwoods extensively and wouldn't have it any other way. Durable, light, and uses standard bow blades--easy to replace. I have the 24" and the length has never bothered me when packing.

    Very professional video! I love the way you & crew do these.
    One important point:
    When the Silky Saw was bested slightly by Bob's Quick Saw the reason is because you used the Silky BIGBOY 2000 with extra large teeth. These are their *largest teeth and are designed for green/soft live wood.*
    Silky makes the BIGBOY saw in *medium teeth or fine teeth version for hard woods.* If you used Silky's medium teeth version of the BIGBOY 2000 you would have smoked the other saw on that hard dead wood.
    Please check it out in a test.
    Get the Silky Folding Landscaping Hand Saw BIGBOY 360 Medium Teeth 350-36.
    Price is $44 USD total on Amazon.com
    *Edit* Also, the same thing with the red handle Pocket Boy you used (large teeth version). The black handled medium tooth one works much faster & is best for the hard dead wood you were cutting.

    I've been using Bob's saw for the last 2 years and I can say that the length is a great thing because the longer the saw, the quicker it cuts and the less energy used. The cover for it is NOT nylon but waxed canvas. I like to keep an extra peg tooth blade in the cover for dry wood, while the raker makes quick work of green wood. You can also just run to the hardware store to buy replacement blades. Getting replacement blades for the other type of folding saws may not be as easy as well and the standard blade for the Bahco quickly gums up with sap or wet wood chips when cutting green wood. The shorter length of the small folding saws will frustrate you at best when cutting anything thicker than 4 inches. Go with the biggest saw you will carry and pick the right type of saw blade. Go for the small Bahco and Silkys when you must be compact but realize their limitations.

    Thanks, and the good news is that I can get the Silky Boy in the UK, and even better, it's reasonably priced. I really do need to get a folding saw, as there's plenty of fallen wood available to me locally, and I have two wood burning stoves.

    I used to carry a Bahco, but for weight/size I've switched to a Silky pocket boy. Largely because of this video. I still carry a "buck saw" blade that I can improvise with found material, but the Silky has yet to fail my needs.

    • @DrCoconut465

      What are the big differences you found in terms of effectiveness and durability between the Silky and the Bahco?

    • @CzechSixTv
      @CzechSixTv 8 лет назад

      For my needs, not much. The Silky is a little slower because of the shorter blade(less teeth per stroke).

    One more post Dave, I usually think a jab saw is something you use to cut out a hole in a wall, I have multi tool's with saw's, and I even have a Puma SBG Warden with a saw, but when I went to Home Depot, I saw a Lenox Folding Jab Saw, anyhow that's the one I chose, it's great, but my point, the multi tool's sometimes is a little too small, yet I wanted something smaller for more delicate work, and I found it with a folding jab saw, it's a great bushcraft tool, we learn from eachother, and I know this is your video, but I luv going out for a hot cup of coffee on a open fire, and improve my bush skill's, like making trap trigger's, etc., and just to whittle, which I use my pocket knives to save the edge on my knife, my favorite three, are my Swamp Rat's, my Wicked Tough Folding, and my new 2Hawks Double Bit Hatchet, hand's down, they so far are my favorite, what I like to see you do is a review on a Folding Jab Saw as a bushcraft tool, becareful driving tonight, watch for the other driver, and have a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.

    Hi David, first of all, I would like to Wish You a Happy Thanksgiving, like I have mentioned before, I have the Silky BigBoy 2000, and yes, it's a great saw, but I alway's wanted a smaller saw, I also have the Wooden Fiskar Saw, with the Power Teeth, not bad, but It was time for the Bacho Laplander, so I thought, I started my search, and by luck, I found a video that was very interesting, I found the Wicked Tough Folding Saw, what amazed me, is when I saw the guy lite chop with it, I said WoW, further video's sort of made up my mind over the Bacho Laplander, from the video's on the Bacho Laplander, it seem's to be a very good one, but when I further investigated the Wicked Tough Folding Saw, and it's warrenty, I called Wicked Tree Gear, and Todd the President, what a nice guy, answered all my question's, and I bought the Wicked Tough Folding Saw, David, I think a face off between the Wicked Tough Folding Saw, and the Bacho Laplander would be a great video, both saw's cut in both directions, and are similar in size, the lifetime warranty of the handle justified the price of the Wicked Saw, I alway's enjoy your video, and trust your opinion on the profuct's, so if all possible, can you do a review on the two saw's, there are some good video's on both, but no face off's on the two, I know you would do a good review, that's why please would you do such a video, Thank You in advance, and Merry Christmas, and a Happy, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year.

    In the test between the silky and the bucksaw the guy on the right has way more leverage and stability than the guy trying to cut the same log at the end who has nothing to stabilize the log with, moreover hes not even trying as hard. Really inaccurate test, I would put the silky up against that buck saw any day of the week.

    • @highonimmi
      @highonimmi 10 лет назад +7

      not only that but, the silky has the ability to fit in a tight spot where the buck saw design doesn't allow it to do that. that was one BIG fail in testing and it wasn't even covered. the silky has the ability to adjust the angle of the blade...this allows the user to stand and cut low branches and fallen trees. I will ALWAYS take the silky over the buck.

      saw this comment before even watching then when I saw what you were talking about just thought wtf?
      How is that a fair comparison? The same log for two people and at the cut off end of another? So unstable, how many of his strokes would have been useless because the wood was moving in the direction he was sawing? Should have been two individual pieces.

      @UltimateSurvivalTips  10 лет назад

      Sorry Man...
      But Sven does work... it's just not as good as some saws for pack and play - LOL... and it's a weird design that I seems like they want you to lose the wing nut that secures the blade. I hate the wing nut... makes it so the blade and cross support don't stay in the red channel piece. LOL.

    I made a different choice that gives me greater versatility. I was wanting a small collapsible saw for hunting, that I could cut wood or bone with. I went with the Outdoor Edge pack saw, it collapses as small or smaller than most of those shown in this video, but has the added advantage of being able to add a bone saw blade and a hacksaw blade.

    Great videos! Just one comment: I'm almost certain that your Silky PocketBoy is not the 170 but the 130. Which I prefer due to its smaller size and almost the same blade size. Are you sure you are using the 170? The size of the handle and the comparison with the Bahco seems to be the 130

    What's your opinion on the Leatherman Surge? It's the one Leatherman that actually does have everything you need, but the saw & file are interchangeable. That means that they can be very easily replaced when they get dull, but it also means that only one can be mounted at any given time, and they're slightly shorter due to the mount. I haven't been able to make my mind up on that one.

    Good tools, the lot. Suprised the Corona professional Razor tooth was not included in the list. More affordable than many, smaller than big folders larger than the small folders, yet it will cut as well or better than some on your list. Good review though. I like them all!i

      Yes... some of the guys like the Corona... and some guys had them at survival training... but it seemed as thought these saws were the ones that ended up gaining the most praise. But you are right... the next saw on this list would have been a Corona. Thanks bro. ~David

    From what I heard, the handle on the Bob Dustrude is really uncomfortable in the hand, despite how effortless it saws. I don't know if they tested it with gloves on or not but I'm sure it's recommended to do so if this is to be your go to saw. Me, I'll settle for a 48-inch pocket chainsaw (Chainmate or Pocketech).

    • @UltimateSurvivalTips
      @UltimateSurvivalTips  10 лет назад +1

      Yes. I have 5 different bags... from EDC to full Long Term Bug Out... we will get to them in the next month or two. EDC depends a LOT on where you live, your knowledge and skill set and what you face on a daily basis. I carry more self defense "tools" in urban areas than where I live... But we are coming out with a series on EDC and Emergency / Bug Out Kits. To start though, you want a good multitool, pocket knife (I usually carry a tactical self-defense pocket knife), I have 2 Wazoo Survival Bracelets (wear them most of the time) they cover a lot of emergency basics. Anyway... you've inspired me to work harder to get the EDC BOB series done. Thanks ~David

    The link to my favorite saw, the laplander, has a little typo so it doesnt work. Great Video, I think about getting myself a leatherman for EDC, what would you recommend if space is limited?

    quick question what saw tooth size would you recommend for backpacking for the pocket size.

      It depends on what do you want to cut. Live-green wood/larger teeth, dry wood/medium teeth, small pieces of wood or "in hand" cutting/fine teeth. Also, you can choose teeth dimensions depending on the surface which was cut, big teeth - rough surface, small teeth - very fine surface. That goes for Silky saws. Which I recommend. Putting pressure only when pulling it's a must, they are pulling saws. If you respect that(not like in this video) they cut like you are cutting bread. They'll do the work for you. Watch a video with some Japanese guy cutting with a pull saw.

    The Silky Gomboy is comparable with the bahco laplander not the bigboy or the pockeyboy
