man I had to tap that subscribe mad quick, this the dopest channel for sure and you were droppin some knowledge in that analysis bruh...good pick up on the references, I never even thought about his name before!
Ian Snuffleupagus That's not really true. There are a lot of different ways that something can catch fire (auto-ignition and piloted ignition being two noted ways) and a lot of different factors that play into what temperature actually causes an ignition. There's a lot of different standards to determine when something catches fire and each will give a different result, and even within tests using the same standards things just catch fire at different temperatures. The universe is simply too messy to say with certainty that paper burns at 451.
Gary Ermann it is kinda true....especially the really crappy pulp paper in books. of course there are different factors that cause it to light up by heat alone, however bradbury didnt mean for the phrase to be a scientific absolute, but as a symbol for the books theme. he ment, if you put a piece of crappy pulp paper into and oven and turn it on, the average temp that it will ignite is 451 degrees.
How that happened was, Ray Bradbury called the fire dept., and asked them the temperature at which paper burns. You can imagine the sarcastic response from the firemen.
If I may argue, Dr. Sweets, that Bradbury says the message is much simpler; that people are simply neglecting a love of literature. The world presented happened because no one put up a fight.
Slashbash It's important to be able to acknowledge what the author themselves state, as well as being able to look further afield for a deeper analysis. One of the reasons some authors, even song writers, don't explain their works is because they want you to be able to think for yourself and come to your own conclusions. Many books will transcend their original intentions long after their authors have passed from this world.
Warstub While that may be true, the author's intent is an important thing to look for. Look at Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, for example. You're supposed to feel bad for the workers, but end up feeling nauseated by the meat-packing. Although, it did revolutionize inspection, so perhaps it can be for the greater good?
Another thing that’s worth mentioning is that in the book Clarisse dies after getting hit by a speeding car and Mildred passes it off as if it were nothing
+Ethan Matthews Me too - I've always loved books about the destructive nature of man and nothing pulled it off as beautifully and poetically as this book.
These videos have become widespread amidst my friends at my old college. Thank you for this, sincerely. My personal request, if it fits your motif, is to analyze Atlas Shrugged since it has essentially been a literary work that is supposed to exemplify a philosophy and there's a lot of themes to play with there. Also a successful "thug notes" analysis of that book would be inconceivably cool. Again thank you for these videos!
The motif of "burning" doesn't go deep enough. This video ignores the fact (twice) that the city burns at the end of the novel. The camp fire is not the last fire, the burning city is. Fire is used in the end of the novel in a way more indicative of sanitation. The city, and with it Montag's troubles with the law, are sanitized by the bombs and the fire. This leaves the door open for the scholars to rebuild with their books. This fits more closely with the allegory of the Phoenix that Bradbury so beautifully articulates at the end. Analysis isn't always about "making a good point". It's also about connecting the dots that link each motif that help drive the story.
Thank you so much! A good majority of my grade, all of my friends and I really disliked the book. Mainly because we just didn't get it. All of that has changed, for me that is. Waddup Dr.Sweets. I just wanted to tell you that my teacher showed us your "Hamlet" video. We all understand it so much better and we get a good laugh out of it. Now everyone in the class is spreading the word and trying to get every english teacher in my city, Las Vegas, to show the students your videos. Soon everyone will know Sparky Sweets Phd. Mad respect and love from the west coast.
This was easily one of the best books they made us read in high school
2:15 I love how none of those books were written yet when Bradbury wrote this.
RayRay be right too! We're all constantly connected through technology these days, but studies are showing that real personal relationships and connections are dropping between those who get their social fix through gadgets.
I've been watching these videos all day and they are so awesome! I love what you're doin man! This doesn't feel forced I feel like a friend is telling me about a book I was to lazy to read but still Need that A on that book report.lol I'll definitely be sharing your videos.
Brilliant analysis btw!
Well done, Doctor. Well done. Thank you so, so much - you're getting quite a following, I must add. Today I was lecturing on Chaucer and a student says "Hey - does that Thug Notes guy have one for THIS story!" You're reaching them...
Bless your soul and this channel. Thank you so much God bless the thugs.
man I had to tap that subscribe mad quick, this the dopest channel for sure and you were droppin some knowledge in that analysis bruh...good pick up on the references, I never even thought about his name before!
THIS BOOK IS BECOMING A REALITY AFTER THE ANDY NGO BOOK BAN.
THE ANALYSIS AT 2:35 IS EXACTLY WHAT HAS GONE DOWN.
You are keeping it real! You have inspired me so much.
451 degrees Fahrenheit is the exact temperature at which paper burns.
Gary Ermann But it said that on the cover of my copy of the book
How that happened was, Ray Bradbury called the fire dept., and asked them the temperature at which paper burns. You can imagine the sarcastic response from the firemen.
In an interview he said it was the chemistry department of UCLA but same story either way.
Thug notes the best channel ever made. Continue Keepin it real dawg!
If I may argue, Dr. Sweets, that Bradbury says the message is much simpler; that people are simply neglecting a love of literature. The world presented happened because no one put up a fight.
Very true.
He a thug wut u expect
Adalberto Lima Yes, but he's a brilliant thug!
This is the book that actually got me into reading books
Your voice is legendary. Stay shiny bro
Still so grateful for your work. I am now a dedicated fan and intend to see all your work.
I think Ray would have loved this video
Your videos helped me pass a very hard exam back in April. Thank you for existing Mr. Sparky :D
Hey Thug Notes, I was wondering if you have a review on Native Son by Richard Wright? I'd love to see what your thoughts are on it.
I was looking for that as well.
What’s funny is I read both books in high school😂
Another thing that’s worth mentioning is that in the book Clarisse dies after getting hit by a speeding car and Mildred passes it off as if it were nothing
Favorite book right here!
I’m Chicana and this is how I talk whilst teaching. Through in some Spanish slang tambien.
This is the best thing in the history of the entire internet. Why am I just hearing about this. A- freaking- mazing!!!

Excellent work! One of the most entertaining and educational channels on RUclips.
I've got my test on this book tomorrow
NotFinn good luck o wait 4 years ago did you pass?
I’m four years late but how’d the test go bro
Thank you so much! A good majority of my grade, all of my friends and I really disliked the book. Mainly because we just didn't get it. All of that has changed, for me that is. Hopefully you will cover or already have covered some more of the books that we'll be reading this year, that would be very appreciated. This was extremely helpful, thanks again!
Yep this is how i pass English class

Thug notes encouraged me to read again 🤗 thanks man
