The crying man at 3:37 was actually a well-known journalist of the time, John Healy, who'd been attending an event at Dublin Castle during Ireland's presidency of the European Community. He's been known for writing a critically renowned book about the social and economic decline of the West of Ireland called 'No One Shouted Stop'. Sadly he died only six months after this moment.
I am Scottish and remember cheering and jumping up and down in support for Ireland. I was 15 at the time. They done fantastic. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up watching this.
Ireland performed admirably in their first appearance, making it to the quarterfinals. They also hold the rare record of having made it all the way to the quarterfinals without winning a single match.
I remember watching the Romania match with my father (a Mayo man) as a 12 year old in Jamaica, Queens.....It wasn't on any channels in English, so we watched it on Univision.....Still one of my fondest sports memories...4 years later, being at Giants Stadium when they beat the Italians is something I will never forget....
On behalf of a bunch of Irish Americans in Minnesota, US who went to our parish school, Our Lady of Grace, and we have all wept and danced and sang and reenacted this wonderful and beautiful video so many times since high school in 2009-10. Now we have kids, and they will too. God bless His Holy Ireland☘️🕊️🦪🇻🇦
I was here in Brazil watching Ireland x Romania in 1990. I was 8 years old and It was the first penalty shootout i ever watched. I love Ireland since then. Dont ask me why.
This was such a big moment in our history, it brought everyone together, and soon after our economy started to grow, the toxic grip of the church started to loosen, cheap travel arrived, and soon after that so did the internet, but this moment was like a bridge from all the struggles of the 80s to a new a brighter decade. I was just a school kid but I remember all the buntings and banners and watching the games in the school hall, and people dancing in the streets. On a separate note that's a great bit of editing when 'There She Goes' comes in with that winning penalty. Gives me goosebumps every time.
as a Croat meself and a huge fan of Ireland and all things Irish, I am hugely conflicted for EURO 2012... After Croatia and Germany, Rep of Ireland are *without a doubt* my favorite national squad and it's unfortunate that the two of us got drawn in the same group, along with two other totally formidable opponents in Italy and Spain. It's a damn shame that only two teams will make it out of this group, and it almost certainly won't be Croatia and Ireland... (cont'd in reply)
From the 3rd minute of this video I just tear up knowing nothing like this will ever happen again. It's one of those don't cry because it's over but because it happened moments😭
the only match in my entire life when i honestly didn't mind losing, it just seemed to be the natural end losing to italy in rome in the quarters. although i still think about a zenga save from a quinn header that could have changed things. great days
I won't be ridiculous, I admit I want Croatia to win, but if we must get sent home, I HOPE TO GOD that Ireland is one of the two teams that qualifies! MUCH LOVE from a die-hard Croatia fan. May the Luck o' the Irish be with this great team!!!!!!!!!!
really well done video, i'm an American-born Croat, I always cheer for Croatia and I always cheer for Ireland!!! You gotta love the plucky, lucky Irish! I hope to God that the Irish and the Slovaks edge out the Russkies and make it to Euro 2012, they'll make it a better tournament!!! go and shock the Russkies in Moscow on 6 September, Ireland! That same day I will be in Dubrovnik following the Croatia-Israel game in Zagreb. go ireland!
The Boys in Green did us all proud at Italia 90. To think Ireland made the Quarters. Now we would be celebrating just qualifying. What the fuck happened.
Ive Always liked Eire. Youve had some quality players, but a real team solidarity aswell. have to say, strange yuo got to QF 1990 without having won a game though.
I dont get all the negativity. Back in 1990 a little country sent their boys to Italy and they played their hearts out and for a while that country celebrated. What the hell does this have to do with France or us Irish being sore losers? Think about it, this isnt a video on Ireland v France, it's about Italia 90. Well from Irelands perspective.
@soontobe1982 It's hard to go through with 3 draws in the World Cup since its expansion. However, Chile managed to do it in 1998. In that group, Italy finished with 7 points, Chile with 3, and Austria and Cameroon finished with 2.
IT was so nice when France got eliminated by South Africa, the revenge of Life!! Go Ireland.. hope to see you in next world cup.. nice greets from PERU
i hope that you, irish, qualify for euro 2012. you had a lot of misfortune last year against france. you didn't deserve watching the world cup at home. i hope i can follow you @ poland and ukraine. good luck tuesday! grtz from belgium!
yeah it evokes fond memories but for some or all of the period 1986-1990, Ireland had available : Bonner Hughton Staunton McGrath Moran O'Leary Lawrenson Whelan Brady Houghton Sheedy Townsend Aldridge and Stapleton. Injury robbed us of Lawrenson and Jack had issues with Brady and O'Leary but you still had players who would excel at any level and McGrath would make a world XI. Quarter final was well within their limits. Even McCarthy played at the highest level in England Scotland and France.
The Irish team is not bad after all:) I don't know why I never hear of it in Budapest. You're better than the Hungarian football team thats for sure :)
@djfoley2K7 You are just going to have to live with the fact he ended up top goalscorer, he is etched in history and THERE'S NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT!!!!

Most Western & Southern Belfast lads don't back the northern Irish team
Jack you gave us our finest hour.
I am Scottish and remember cheering and jumping up and down in support for Ireland. I was 15 at the time. They done fantastic. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up watching this.

Ireland will never be a happier little country than when they were during Italia 90. I love my country so much

The Boys in Green did us all proud at Italia 90. To think Ireland made the Quarters. Now we would be celebrating just qualifying. What the fuck happened.
We had an exceptional crop of players, that’s what happened.
Why can’t we be good anymore we have the talent
John Delaney

Now we lose to Luxembourg and struggle to beat Andorra 😭
Schillaci was on fire back then. Italy should have won the world cup that time
The greatest time to growing up in the greatest country on earth
We Won Italy in semis for You Ireland , from Argetina
The Green of EIRE ❤❤❤
A beautiful dream!
I like Ireland 90 better than the other 23 participating teams especially the hosts, defending champs & West Germany.
@soontobe1982 It's hard to go through with 3 draws in the World Cup since its expansion. However, Chile managed to do it in 1998. In that group, Italy finished with 7 points, Chile with 3, and Austria and Cameroon finished with 2.
Hope everything is ok for Jack now, the news said he just collapsed on a family trip at Spain.
Back in a major tournament! Go Ireland at Euro 2012!

IT was so nice when France got eliminated by South Africa, the revenge of Life!! Go Ireland.. hope to see you in next world cup.. nice greets from PERU

THAT DREAM HAS COME TRUE!
I love this country
Got goosebumps watching this and i'm not even Irish
What a debut
Ireland 1990: the most negative side in world cup history. Thank goodness the montage omitted the back-pass fest with Packie Bonner against Egypt.
Wouldn't it be nice if we both qualified out of that group? :P
Best of luck on Sunday!
Was only 6 but remember my dad jumping round room
bet you any money you got this off,
:REELING IN THE YEARS:
i'm not even irish and this video brought tears to my eyes

David O'leary of Arsenal....
our day will come, there will be other world cups and we will meet france again one day and our lads will batter them off the pitch
anyone know the name of the song after 3:05??
@Steenville Sour grapes much?
OOH AH OOH AH
Ireland deserved to win that from 4 nil Dow to losing by a penal goal
England B Team
Ireland was so great before mass immigration. We were one.
And France are out of the World Cup. :D
