He [Denis] went on: "When I had this idea I ran to my first AD’s office the next morning and said, 'I need bagpipes!' There was a long silence. 5:24 Atreides theme sounds very Celtic, and I love it! Very heroic but also noble. The beginning has a very 'home, where I belong' like feel and it's very tender, reminds me of 'May it be' in Fellowship of the Ring soundtrack.
I think it's actually meant to sound more Mycenaean Greek. The Atreides claim descent from Agamemnon of Mycenae and the House of Atreus. The Ancient Greeks did have several forms of bagpipes, including the Tsampouna and the Askomandoura.
The film started in Germany today and I don't want to spoil the moment when the theme will be played (epic moment, I had goose bumps all over my body.), but for me the theme ( 5:28 ) sound more celtic than Mycenaen Greek. For me it's more medieval. Maybe also Scottish / English because of the sound of the bagpipes. It sounds like a medieval epic for an old noble house in a Sci-Fi story what underlines the timelessness of Dune's story. And whether the bagpipes of ancient Mycenae sounded like today's bagpipes can be questioned. Of course one can draw arcs to Mycenae, but ultimately, whether it is a reference to ancient pre-Greece or medieval Europe, it is a reference to old monarchist / aristocratic times in a sci-fi world that stands out and highlights political situation in the world of Dune expecially for House Atreides. And both ancient Mycenae as well as the medieval noble houses have perished. If the latter still exist, then only as sad billboards for tourism and gossip for the tabloids.
@@Sesharon Could be both. I mean the Atreides hail from the planet Caladan, which is an abvious reference to Caledonia. Even the way the planet looks reminds you of Scottish coast. Add that on top of what we learn from The Buttlerian Jihad and we'll get an interesting mixture of both Greek and Scottish influence.
The second those bagpipes started, my eyes began watering. They watered again during the siege when he repeats them. I have no Scottish heritage. It was just powerful.
6 Academy Awards including Best Original Score! What else do you have to say? Congratulations, Well Done, WTG, and THANK YOU to Hans and Denis. Can you imagine what we see and hear in Part 2!!!
I don't understand the track titles from the complete score, but I'm trying to match up and assuming it's in chronological order, I'm guessing "Caladan Maneuver" from the full score: ruclips.net/video/dQCGr0P4PIk/видео.html is where Harkonnen get introduced, no spoilers, so for those of you who have read the book...
It was very interesting to see how they managed to tie it back to both the Galicians and the Scots. In the lore, House Atreides apparently have a Mediterranean origin but they had also overseen a planet (Caladan) that had been settled by Celts. In this respect, both cultures have bagpipes as traditional instruments and resulted in a fusion of the two's bagpiping cultures.
I totally feel this. Thematically what they ended up using in the movie makes sense though, as although they carry the Atreides flag it’s not really the Atreides house in the fight anymore, and it’s spiraling into an out of control holy war
You've made me wonder. I'm going to discuss spoilers for Dune and Dune Messiah. Obviously Hans will build on this peice to an absolutely earth shattering crescendo to go with the Atreides and Fremen victory in arakkeen, I expect in unison with the breaching of the shield wall and the entrance of the worms, with additional crescendos to accompany the Atreides lieutenant dueling Feyd and then Paul himself dueling Feyd. However, how will he subvert this for Dune Messiah? Will we perhaps see a glorious turned horrific sequence of the jihad to open the third film? Perhaps the music will be what tells the thematic story of apparent victory hiding unimaginable bloodshed. I'm extremely curious about what will become of House Atreides in Messiah, perhaps the theme will remain glorious but become associated with the great and terrible as it began to be in Dune part 2. I wonder if perhaps something will be developed for the Fremen in part 2 as they will have a far greater focus in part 2 than in part 1 and instead that will characterise the crescendos of violence in the sequels.
I love this, rarely you hear bapgpipes used in such a modern way especially in high budget movies. As a scotsman this makes me very happy that our national instrument can still keep up with modern instruments and technology. Well done Hanz Zimmer, you've outdone yourself sir!!!
Instruments are tools to be used, all to craft an amazing story through music, the bagpipes are a bit more difficult to use, but the payoff is so much greater.
One of the most powerful and emotionally evocative instruments on this planet. Nothing quite stirs the soul as much as the Highland pipes, incredible to hear them in a science fiction score.
I listen to this tune for a tenth or twentieth time and finally catch what it brings to me: it gives flesh to the Atreides. This is no longer the heroes of the battle of Corrino, not the ancient terranean family, not the unofficial leaders of Landsraad council, these are people.
All that made them, all that opposed them. Agreed. Genius. Would have liked to have heard the Bene Gesserit theme mixed in too. The rock guitar is clearly homage to Toto's soundtrack for the 80's version.
_Tenet_ may be a puzzle to be pondered but THIS, _Dune Part I,_ is an experience to be cherished and felt like a religious rite, again and again. After the latest Dune trailer,I rewatched / relistened to the movie and soundtrack and I couldn't find that epic melody I heard there. Finally found it. Weird that they didn't use it in the first movie yet they do in the third trailer.
This, besides "Armada" and "Paul's Dream", is my favorite music piece from the entire soundtrack album. Every time it played in the movie I got chills and wanted to cry tears of joy. And now I'm listening to it on a loop all the time and can't get it out of my head.

Our technology is so different than the past we can make this series truly what it’s supposed to be. I feel so honored to be a part of this Dune Era ❤️
People should note that bagpipes aren't particularly Scottish: no one can be sure where they originated, but they're among the oldest of human musical instruments (after voice, flutes and drums/percussion) and were a natural musical innovation to goat- and sheep-raising societies in hilly and mountainous areas in prehistory. Because of its remoteness, Scotland is among the LAST places in Eurasia where the instrument was introduced and popularized, though it remains their best-known modern "home" thanks to recent (though now fading) memories of the British Empire.
but perhaps the use of bagpipes here as well as the use of kilts (can't remember exactly) is a nod to the fierce and unrelenting scots, similar to the fighting prowess of House Atreides. and especially on Caladan the terrain is all highlands, similar to Scotland i think. something visual and aural to help us to create a link to the movie. especially from the current young viewers
True, also there are like 200 types of bagpipes that vastly differ in sound and loudness. The "scottish bagpipe" is known as the Great Highland Bagpipe, others would be e.g. the Smallpipe, Uillean Pipes and so on. Great instruments :)
We've got Goat Bagpipes named Ney-Anban in Iran. Cool to see how the instrument itself moved through cultures and found its place in a diverse variety of traditional music. Love the power in the Scottish bagpipes. The soundtrack to this movie gave me a chub, that Sardaukar throat singing was superb too.
@@Wolcott not everything need be about Scotland. Just the impression and how it sounds like. It's not as if Paul is gonna ask why he's being trained in Filipino martial arts, right?
Personally, I don't interpret it as Paul and Chani's love theme in part 2. It's still the House Atreides theme but only taking the most primal instrument, the voice. Given that in part 2, all that's left of House Atreides are two people and perhaps it's a reflection of Paul thinking of building House Atreides again by finding love. Another reason why this might not be their love theme is because it's plays prominently as the Holy War began with the ascension of Paul as emperor but with a darker tone, perhaps reflecting Paul's feeling as House Atreides is turning into darkness.
@@Tochi68 You're not wrong about it being the House Atreides theme! I think that it's more for Paul than it is for Chani, but I think because Chani has changed Paul in some aspects (i.e. getting him to learn how to love etc etc), the resulting track ("A Time of Quiet in Between Storms") ends up sounding sweeter and more...intimate (?) than its predecessor. And it definitely plays at the ending like you said. There's an interview (forgot if it was Denis or Hans) that mentions they play it not just because of Paul's ascension, but because Chani and Paul separate - something along the lines of them realizing they are lonelier without each other which makes their love more profound.
I know I am late to the conversation when I say this, but yes the bagpipes are the best part of this track. But the one thing that I feel like that isn't getting enough attention is the track's opening sequence [from 0:00-3:21]/the ending sequence [10:20-13:54]. It's so beautiful and so soft. IDK about you guys, but the fact that those two sequences aren't getting appreciation is a shame to me. I know how much I appreciate them.
Buddy, I come from the future to tell you that you were so correct on this observation that Hans Zimmer himself made this motif the main theme of Dune Part Two. Well done.
This is my 2nd Favorite theme after "Kiss the ring" From part 2.Both the films and their Music are Cinematic Masterpieces. Thank You DENIS &HANS For this ART.
some 300 - Tyler Bates - Braveheart - Freedom - Vibes - Last Samurais on universe... or Hans tried to put them all together for a All-time-heavy-masterpiece-once-in-a-lifetime-symphony!! ...some Mongolian voices in there too!
I think a lot of people are missing a huge aspect of the music. Music is just another form of storytelling and Hans Zimmer has really mastered it. Listen to how the soft angelic voice is singing, telling the story of house Atreides in a somber remembrance tone. And then at first an echo in history the song of Atreides rises to tell of strength and pride but acknowledges it's demise. But as most have pointed out that the bagpipes in the song really stick out and makes them remember the song so too will you remember House Atreides
To the people bringing up that the Atriedes are Greek, the bagpipes are still quite fitting as the oldest known bagpipes were found in Greece and the instrument since came to Scotland from there, so the use of bagpipes is double fitting. Now for an additional Scottish bit of flavour, the drum cadence beginning at around 7:35 is almost entirely identical to Highland Cathedral. I also really appreciate how the theme is often used in the movie with a small single bagpipe leading the theme before the rest of the band joins in, showcased both during the landing on Arrakis and particularly effectively during the last stand.
I hope we get a 3rd movie. This could possibly be right up there with LOTR in fantasy and storytelling. When part 2 comes out, I think people that didn’t like the 1st one will have new eyes as it will be a completed story.
The two sections with the woman's voice are so hauntingly beautiful. It's almost like a kind of ancient lullaby, but filled with mystery, wonder and small dose of melancholy. Bitter-sweet. It's very unfortunate that those particular parts of this musical sketch were not used in the film. I hope Denis Villeneuve & Hans Zimmer decide to revisit them and find a way to use them to emotionally powerful effect in Part 2.
ruclips.net/video/89l7slLVyOs/видео.html I'm sure everybody who will see this comment will be like, "dude, why are you writing the same thing?" But just hear me out! The link above is a rendition of the opening sequence of this song by Hans Zimmer called "Foreword" from "the Art and Soul of Dune." Even though it wasn't used in the film at all [and I'm hoping that part 2 will include this portion of the track], it's one of the most soothing tracks I've ever listened too. Personally, I think it would be a very perfect fit within part 2 as a farewell piece! If you haven't listened to this song, you need to give it a listen. It's such a beautiful piece to listen to, reflect on... and sometimes it gives me that lump in my throat because it's so emotional and spiritual.

@@Sesharon the majority dont associate bagpipes with the Greek region
@Joshua Gibbons watched it and its great. you have something to look forward to!
Best song from this album. I think Zimmer understand that Atreides is noble and middlearth in own way.
The beginning reminds me of 'May it be' in Fellowship of the Ring.

Just massive chills. This is an anthem worthy of Atreides. No wonder the Emperor feared the Duke.
The second those bagpipes started, my eyes began watering. They watered again during the siege when he repeats them. I have no Scottish heritage. It was just powerful.
With a name like Calum Sanderson, brother? Surely a little North Sea (therefore Scottish) heritage!
The bagpipes mixed with the throat singing is basically a musical version of what was happening in the film!!! I love it

It's called a leitmotif

Never has it been this easy to root for House Atreides. Great mood setting, fantastic music.
Sounds about right for House Atreides. This makes me all the more eager to hear House Harkonnen.

This movie hit something in my soul.
As a Galician, I got goosebumps when the pipes started thundering in the cinema. Unexpected and beautiful
@@joshuabruce9599 not just any Mediterranean, they're descended from Atreus of Greek mythology, dunno how you tied it to Galicia
@@enderman_666 Galicia has Celtic roots as well. I think it's fair to say that bagpipes are as culturally significant there as they are in Scotland.
6:30 gives me life. Makes me want to go where i've never been.
If this soundtrack hadn't won the Oscar, than Hollywood hadn't deserve this soundtrack.
I really missed this bagpipe theme in Dune Part 2. I think it would fit the fight scene where Gurney Halleck fought.
I totally feel this. Thematically what they ended up using in the movie makes sense though, as although they carry the Atreides flag it’s not really the Atreides house in the fight anymore, and it’s spiraling into an out of control holy war
I love how triumphant and victorious this sound.
And also ancient.
I hear some freedom drama sounds from Braveheart... !! Anyone else?
Hans Zimmer is incredible, Mixing some of the Sardaukar chanting into the song for the battle scene is just genius!
All that made them, all that opposed them. Agreed. Genius. Would have liked to have heard the Bene Gesserit theme mixed in too. The rock guitar is clearly homage to Toto's soundtrack for the 80's version.
After watching Dune (2021), and listening to this, I'm 100% Atriedes now.
_Tenet_ may be a puzzle to be pondered but THIS, _Dune Part I,_ is an experience to be cherished and felt like a religious rite, again and again. I've revisited theaters seldom, and usually only once more to share the experience with those of whom I'm fond. I went to _Dune Part I_ FOUR TIMES. Once in standard, once with those interactive chairs that move, and once in IMAX...by myself. On the fourth time, I insisted my brother accompany, also in IMAX. I _LOVED_ Bladerunner 2049 as his favorite...until THIS.
I hope they re-release it in lead-up to _Dune Part II,_ that I might re-experience it at least one more time.

I love how NONE of the advertising let slip that it was gonna be a two parter. You *can’t* tell this story in one sitting and do it due credit.
Informative, thank you very much
but perhaps the use of bagpipes here as well as the use of kilts (can't remember exactly) is a nod to the fierce and unrelenting scots, similar to the fighting prowess of House Atreides. and especially on Caladan the terrain is all highlands, similar to Scotland i think. something visual and aural to help us to create a link to the movie. especially from the current young viewers
The soundtrack to this movie gave me a chub, that Sardaukar throat singing was superb too.

absolutely mind blowing music when watching Dune last night... I'm Scottish and this just was the icing on the cake at the cinema.
congrats to those who found this before the second film dropped, you've found the precursor to paul and chani's love theme 🫡
@@Tochi68it is literally their love theme though, but can have all the subtext you mentioned as well.
Zimmer here combined mythology and distant future in one piece
I know I am late to the conversation when I say this, but yes the bagpipes are the best part of this track. But the one thing that I feel like that isn't getting enough attention is the track's opening sequence [from 0:00-3:21]/the ending sequence [10:20-13:54]. It's so beautiful and so soft. IDK about you guys, but the fact that those two sequences aren't getting appreciation is a shame to me. I know how much I appreciate them.
I could not agree more.
Yeah, they feel like true home, like a mother singing you into sleep when you where an infant, softly protecting you.

It has some distant Antic wibes in it which is perfect since the Atreides are the descendants of Agamemnon. Hats of for Herr Zimmer, again.

Atreus, not Agamemnon
I think a lot of people are missing a huge aspect of the music. Music is just another form of storytelling and Hans Zimmer has really mastered it. Listen to how the soft angelic voice is singing, telling the story of house Atreides in a somber remembrance tone. And then at first an echo in history the song of Atreides rises to tell of strength and pride but acknowledges it's demise. But as most have pointed out that the bagpipes in the song really stick out and makes them remember the song so too will you remember House Atreides
It is insane that there are people are saying this soundtrack is bad.

Knowing that Guthrie Govan played those bagpipes with his guitar explain a lot! 🤘
No, the Atreides have Greek ancestry but Caladan's heritage is celtic.

Can you please tell where can I find that type of lullaby type of sound...... It is really mesmerising..

I'm sure everybody who will see this comment will be like, "dude, why are you writing the same thing?" But just hear me out!
