I wonder if Varg meant to tune higher than normal or he just couldn't tune by ear very well.
I think it was intentional. It's called F-standard tuning.
Its intentional, Varg use that tunning for a lot of different Burzum tracks

It happens when you have a lot of gain maybe try turning it down
you can press fret 5, second string like varg does, its sounds the same as open
