Moving to Canada for a little while
Sometimes I feel like Anthony forgets that this band is Canadian and isn’t always responding to American politics
Yeah but they definitely react to other foreign issues. Their 2012 record had some of their reactions to the riots in Greece. Who know? Maybe they did set this soundtrack to the massive fuck up that was last year

Such a weird title haha. When I got to see them a few years ago I was too embarrassed to buy a shirt because they all said God's Pee
reading the title, i thought melon had a seizure while writing it
I've listened the new album twice, and it's been both times an unbelievable listening experience. I really love the album. The music is alive, visual and psychedelic. I wonder why Anthony doesn't feel the same? I regard this thing just as highly as their stuff from 20 years ago
That's what I was thinking too! It's very strong, and I like the new things they tried. Some of the crescendos were slightly underwhelming, but only slightly, for the most part they were extremely compelling and moving.
It’s very good, I imagine if he listened to it more he’d probably like it more. Something like this or like an autechre record aren’t meant to be listened to maybe twice at most then written about, but obviously you can’t really spend that kind of time with every release so it’s always going to be a bit weird.
Had no idea Godspeed had released. I’m excited to dive in!

Well, if he thinks Asunder Sweet and Luciferian Towers were sub-7 records (which he did), a 7/10 for At State’s End would make it the strongest release since Allelujah.

Her we have Lift your skinny, F# A#, and Slow Riot. That's it. Thankfully there is Bandcamp :P
Really can’t agree with this one. The album is easily a 9 for me, with how it’s orchestrated I think it hits all the notes it’s going for extremely well. Just like a Godspeed record should, with its light drone tones underneath strings, field recordings to start off sections and honestly some of their best crescendos to date. Especially with the climax of government came, where it feels like the entire album was building up to a single moment that felt worth while and paid off. And the very comforting strings at the end of the album, I really don’t see why you would think otherwise, since this is practically everything you could want in a Godspeed album.
He gave it a 7, he liked the album.
It is "practically everything you could want from a Godspeed album" and nothing more. I think it earned a 7.
Yeah mostly agree, though the end of the album isn't so much comforting as it is pulsating with desperation and heartbreak
Wait, that's illegal.
its cuz it's a 7 in relation to the other godspeed records, that's kinda how he does scoring around here.
Let's be honest, this is a strong 8. their best album since Allelujah.
Nah middle 9. It’s honestly fantastic and I love everything it does. The crescendos feel more vibrant than they ever have and the drums have such a rich texture to them, which you rarely hear in Godspeed songs. and it still has an original feel to it. Honestly If you want a better review that feels more alive and interesting watch a RUclips called “Bryson” review it.
Let´s be honest, second track is quite interesting, rest is boring generic GY!BE music. If you fed AI with pre-hiatus albums, it would compose better tracks than this. 4/10 (saying from the point that they were my gods back in 2010s)
This is correct
@@michalvalko248 i disagree but i get it. It's a 9 for me but i agree that it is your standard GY!BE, but as far as being what you would expect from generic GY!BE it's really good imo, and kind of exactly what i ask for when it comes to this kind of band. It's not groundbreaking like F# of LYSF, but still great as far as post-rock goes.
Decent to Strong 8 for sure
God has peed us a great album, thanks god.
I never clicked so fast on a melon review
Thanks for not trashing this. Fire at Static Valley is sublime and my favorite shorter track they’ve ever released. The whole album continues to grow on me and is their best since “Allelujah” as you mentioned. HOWEVER, “Asunder” doesn’t get enough shine imo and is underrated by most it seems.
Completely agree. Asunder is my favorite post-hiatus album actually. It is so dark and dreadful.
Yeah Asunder is second only to LYSF to me. It’s build is so perfect and the climax in Piss Crowns is sublime.
@@nickfleece5562 the violin in Piss Crowns for those first 2 to 3 minutes is incredible. So eerie and atmospheric

Godspeed You! At the Disco
I've listened through 4 times and am currently on my 5th listen as I type this. I think 7 is fair but I think its creeping to be a solid to strong 8 for me. Every time I listen it gets a little bit better, a little more lush and I feel the emotion just a little bit more. Job's Lament is amazing! and the last half of the record is truly incredible and a perfect way to ride out the album. I also like the call back riff that gets played throughout. And I usually am not one for skit-like field recording tracks, but Rockets for Mary I listen to every time. The crystal clear recordings of the distant explosions and the thunderous echo, coupled with the captured souls that are lost during the recording, truly adds a haunting and angry interlude to what I find a really emotional album. Certainly my favorite post-hiatus album and is super close to being just as good as their early work. Might be better than Yanqui.
Disappointed that he wasn’t a huge fan of Job’s Lament. That song is amazing
@@dfkdb6249 I was definitely surprised to not see it on the favorite tracks list.I think the slow buildup of military alphabet must’ve killed it for him for whatever reason.
Wow Anthony, really didn't expect that this was going to be an art review of Andres Serrano's 'Piss Christ'. I thought it would be a music review
I gotta be the one to stand up for Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress. (tldr go back and give it another listen!)
In my opinion it was an improvement upon what they had done so well with Allelujah. Asunder kicks off with some hard hitting drums to pull in attention, then immediately proceeds with a relentless wall of sound. While they did not so much make use of their ability to crescendo in this track, that is far from what makes a great GY!BE song. Instead it focuses on being a trudging, overwhelming and unstoppable melodic force.
I would also argue that the album structure of Asunder was an improvement on it's predecessor, the two drones back-to-back in the middle of the album act as both a cool-down and build up for the classic, crescendoing godspeed piece Piss Crowns. Piss Crowns is one of their finest tracks to date - it has an incredible darkness at first which slowly undulates and transforms into light sections of strings and guitar. The second half of the song includes one of godspeeds catchiest endings, which has a triumphant and roaring energy which leaves you at such a high point.
I'd recommend that anyone who loves GY!BE relisten to this masterpiece, especially if you're a fan of their louder or heavier tracks.
it’s a 10 for me. their best since lift. it distills all of my favourite aspects of their sound into one perfect album. unless someone releases something genuinely miraculous later this year, this is aoty for me no doubt.
how'd you feel about their last album? Also what are your all time favorite tracks?
@@batman-sr2px I adore all of their albums, but their last one probably ranks last place in the discography for me. it’s still a light 8 however, they haven’t made an album below an 8 in my opinion. luciferian feels like a movie, it’s very cinematic and cool. its harder for me to rank tracks but I think government came/cliff’s gaze/cliffs gaze at empty waters rise/ashes to sea or nearer to thee might be my favourite of their songs (right now anyway). other ones that are my faves (in no particular order) include 09-15-00, dead flag blues, all of slow riot, sleep, piss crowns are trebled, and fire at static valley :) they’re amazing its hard to even list favourites, all of their songs are consistently fantastic. greatest band of all time!
update at the end of the year: someone did release something miraculous that dethroned this as aoty for me. sinner get ready by lingua ignota is aoty but this is a close second for me

I noticed a few weak moments, but this is one of my favorite albums in a long time.
I saw them in the last year before their hiatus, they were opening for A Perfect Circle on the Thirteenth Step tour. It was fun as hell
Haven’t listened to the new album yet but on Post-Rock groups/forums people are praising it very highly, even going as far as to compare it to F# A# ♾
It’s so goddamn good
It's not even close to that. Best since Allelujah sure

Fr. It’s fantastic honestly. I’m surprised that he would think otherwise since this is practically everything he wanted in a Godspeed album anyways.
That’s a good thing. Understanding a reviewer’s taste is important to using their opinions to inform what to listen to. I was taught this by master donkey in his critically acclaimed video “game critics”
I was really suprised Melon felt so little about this one. I think it's up there as one of their better works, not Skinny Fists or F# A# Infinity level, but still a really good release.

I like it but I wish their was more build up in the album, so those peaks really hit.
I actually find it odd that the peaks aren’t as intense as other albums. I feel like all the other post-hiatus albums get a lot harder than At State’s End ever does. Not a bad thing, though. I really like this record, but it almost feels restrained at times.

This reads "phoned in" all over. Not the album, the review
Your review is pretty spot on. I agree about there later works. I've recently discovered Silver Mt Zion and it's like stepping back into their older catalog.
I wish you actually talked about Job's Lament too, that was my favorite track from the LP, but shocking enough to see you not actually even care about the individual movements, they truly have something special on them. But thanks for mentioning the opening movement of "Cliff" I mean "GOVERNMENT CAME" that was a hellish track indeed.
First of the Last Glacier hits hard; Cliffs Gaze hits mad.
This was such a good album. A return to form for them and a strong 9 for me. Could easily be AOTY

I love your reviews but I think you misinterpreted some of the points in your review. Gy!be is a band that offers different things in each album, as you mentioned, there is no need to expect for the work they did on their old albums again. You probably don't like drone music but it's amazing to see how they adding new layers on top of the Luciferian Towers in this album. I believe after this album if you listen Luciferian Towers again, everything will make much more sense. There are so many emotions in those tracks, they are like abstract artworks imo and i can't imagine a better way for them to express their feelings like increasing sadness and angriness for the current situations.
