In order to avoid the black marks on wood, you need to cut faster. Basically you burn the wood when you keep the saw blade spinning on the wood surface. So you need to press and cut as fast as possible and then you move up the blade and not let it spinning while you are looking if the cut was good or not. Don't get me wrong, I'm also in your shoes: I started recently to "play" with wood and I'm doing a lot of mistakes, but I think it's valuable to learn from each other.
