  • How to replace transmission fluid on a Ford Excursion or F250 4r100, but the general process applies to almost any automatic transmission.
    Do not use Valvoline MaxLife fluid any longer. It has changed to Mercon LV, which is not the best for the 4r100 transmission.
    This is the fluid you want: amzn.to/3uqg0nb

      Ha you are 100% correct. Dang oil jugs always throw me off having 5 quarts in them.

      I only saw gallon jugs/containers for milk & ATF not oil containers ?

    So Maxlife should no longer be used in the 4R100? I thought Maxlife has been formulated for Mercon LV for a long time? I could be wrong, but on their website it still says Maxlife is compatible with Mercon V

    I have watched your video several times. I believe I am now ready to tackle this job in my Excursion. Thank you so much for taking your time to video this procedure.

    So are you putting the hose the fluid comes out of to the return line? I’ve seen in multiple forums that it’s supposed to be the return line at the back of transmission. Is this the same line just the front?

    • @TheGaginator
      @TheGaginator  8 месяцев назад

      It doesnt matter which ones you use really. You can use the feed hose to the cooler, or the return hose from the cooler.

    Did you replace the gasket on the drain pan? Thanks.

    You didn't drain the torque converter theres a bolt behind that rubber plug in the bellhousing

      This process pushed ALL the fluid out of every part associated with the tranny

      Im doing this job right now and found out not every torque converter has a drain plug on 4r100s. Some OEM and aftermarket. I looked extensively and I have found one of the rare annoying ones. So I will be flushing the transmission fluid this way.
      Thanks for posting the video man!
      Hopefully also will have a video up on some of these maintenance things. Im doing ATS dip stick tube, pan gasket, filter and flush of course.

    Thanks for making the video.. On a similar flush method I saw on the DieselStop.. When pumping go thru the gears pausing for 5 secs, that gets more old fluid out and put a new 3/8" Magnefine filter on that return line.. many Ford dealers did that.. takes about 20 quart to flush completely 4R100.. some say dropping pan and replacing filter isn't necessary.. since they rarely clog.. I like Mobil 1 ATF.. full synthetic.. very hard to burn that stuff.. thanks again

    What’s that shock in minute 18:22? Any info on it? What is it for? How much was it? Do you like it?

    Great video! How much fluid did you actually use by your measurements?

    • @TheGaginator

      I ended up using 20 quarts, but you really only NEED to use 16

      It's the oil containers that always have 5 quarts that probably threw you off.

    So you kind of went back and forth over the video. Do both lines need drained or just one?

    • @TheGaginator
      @TheGaginator  2 месяца назад

      The point of removing the lines is just to find out which one is the pressure hose so you can use the transmission pump to force the fluid out. A small amount of fluid will come out of the other line, but thats all

    Ok, based on all of the changes Ford makes on ATF, what is the latest version/kind of ATF Ford is now recommending? Even the Ford truck boards are fairly ambiguous about the whole Mercon fluid types. What did you use, and is that what you recommend?
    I can't find the correct answer as to ATF fluid, not even from a Ford dealer, lol.

      Mercon V is what you want to use in the transmission, and use "transfer case fluid" specifically in the transfer case. Valvoline MaxLife recently was updated to Mercon LV spec, and not good for the 4r100 transmission now.
      Here is the transfer case fluid: amzn.to/42rxzzT
      here is the transmission fluid: amzn.to/3uqg0nb

      How about if you drained as much as possible ,clean the pan and filter the old oil through cheese cloth and a paper oil filter and put the oil back in ,then too it up. That way the chemicals stay the same .

    If your tans is all original I would use mercon3. Mercon5 aka merconV will eat away the clutch material used in the older original trannies. If it's been rebuilt then merconV is fine. Don't top off a mercon3 with mercon5 or it will fail in a year or less. I found out the hard way.
