Death is just part of the Process : Inscryption Ep2 oops

- It is starting to dawn on me that I will have to die a bunch to progress the game. Though the plan would seem to be to get as far as you can every run. Personally I just want to play cards a bunch.

Credits song - Switched on Carcassi - Brian Bolger
Inscryption is an inky black card-based odyssey that blends the deckbuilding roguelike, escape-room style puzzles, and psychological horror into a blood-laced smoothie. Darker still are the secrets inscrybed upon the cards... Игры
Not using the mantis twice to win 2 matches instantly, Francis needs to get out the Excel sheets!
It hurts so much seeing him place the mantis in the leftmost field
Also, scrissors at the last fight :D
also not sacrificing two cards in the last round
"I need to do this again, but with, like, less stupidity!" - Francis John, 2024
i have to say this game without music isn't the same... feels like the spooky ambiance is gone
I've found that an audio cross-fade between clips usually smooths out the music enough that transitions between short clips aren't too jarring. Though it is somewhat tedious to do in the editor, granted.
Instead of faster, maybe study the rules a bit? You walked into a bunch of battles that you could have ended in a single turn and either dragged them out or lost. You also seem to be unclear on how fliers work, they fly over the opposite card and hit the opponent, then can be hit by the opponent's card on the next turn. Inscryption is a great game, but you aren't quite approaching it from a great angle.
I think he's too worried about efficiency ideas that you'd find in games like Magic the Gathering and it's clouding his ability to just look at what's in front of him for what it is.
I think he'll do fine in time, the point of the game is to learn as you go and take in the vibes.
@@amazingkool I won't spoil, but I'm still not sure if the inherent weakness of the card game play in Inscryption works for or against the game as a whole. There are games with similar design intents where the moment to moment gameplay is difficult enough to detract from the intended experience and others were the gameplay is trivial enough as to be a pointless addition.
It's weird seeing Francis struggle so much.
I remember when he was new to ONI! It's a process. :-)
The boss vibes are totally different without the music. The trapper looks so friendly now.
It's so strange! I'm so used to the Trapper's theme coming in heavy (it's my favorite theme in the game) and so I got really confused for a hot minute when there was only silence.) It's sad, the OSTs add so much to the game
44:05 If you'd put down the Mantis in one of the middle spots, it would have hit him for 6 (3 left, 3 right). Insta-kill.
Also, I started playing after watching your episode 1, and I'm totally hooked. Please, do continue. And maybe explore the cabin some more. It might help 😉
Hey Francis, there might be other comments about this, but you can sacrifice any of your creatures for blood. Though it likely wouldn't have changed the end result, you could've used a squirrel and stink bug to bring out the wolf. Something I didn't realize for a while when playing. Thout you could only sacrifice squirrels and black goats for whatever reason.
he could have sacrificed the wolf and the other card to turn the battle
do not put the mantis on the edge, let it attack 2 spaces
Man, no music is kinda sad, the in-game music is very nice
I actually like no music, it is fitting and more convenient on edit stage of the video
@@mikhailgusev2394 Couldn't you just add music back in during the editing, though? The OSTs are free online.
Bees Fly.
Episode 1? you got me confused there, sir. almost didn't click the video.
41:00 Ouch, that was a painful misplay. Had the mantis played on the R center, he'd deal 3x2=6 damage, the bee and stinkbug would make 8, for an instant victory.
Alternatively, a R edge mantis would kill one deer and overkill the one behind it before dying, then the stinkbug could kill the L edge deer, leaving a single enemy card in play.
The L edge was literally the worst place to put the mantis.
For that matter, playing the mantis on turn 1 would have been an instant victory.
Edit: Nice save at 42:30. FJ should do math more often XD.
44:00 Ow, ow, ow, total misplay. A 3/1 mantis is a turn 1 victory if you play it in the center! 3*2=6, which is greater than 5!
I can feel Francis have a hard time digesting all the mechanics. I wonder how he will fare in the 2nd phase of the game.
Hell, might even not reach that far without spoiler based on the caged wolf event. The hint to progress is subtle
Bees bypass the enemy cards, that's why you're not killing them. I know you just wanted to play this to give your brain a break, (which is really understandable considering your usual playstyle) but you gotta figure out the mechanics at least!
Every time you say squirrel, all I can imagine is the Phineas and Ferb song "Squirrels in my Pants"
29:50
Stall the LH frog with a pelt, cut the incoming raven, buy time to draw more cards. You were actually in a decent spot, all things considered.
Francis, you NEED to realise what the effects of each card are.
Flyers cannot be blocked except by other flyers or cards that specifically can block flyers, which means that normal ground based critters will NEVER take damage from them.
This is something you seem to be continually blanking on.
You really need to apply your usual strategy of study and thought to this game.
Seems like the death of the caged wolf basically freed the wolf, replacing Caged Wolf with Wolf.
OMG Francis please spend 10 seconds thinking how Mantis work, you'll figure out what you did there
I'm not sure you really understand this game Francis...
I could be wrong, have not played the game, but when your caged wolf card broke I think something may have changed in the walk around area.
Yup, but FJ is so focused he forgot that his surrounding have puzzles.
Seeing Francis avoid so many 1-hit KO's is painful
Your Mantis atacks twice in a row, once left and once right. If you play it at the edge it can only atack once due to missing target area on one side. So you should play it if possible in the middle. A matis with 3/1 deals 6 demage per turn, more than enougth to end the game in the first round.
Your Mantis plays turnd me into a backseat gamer of the worst kind.
between the 2 episodes i bought the game and finished it, its story is strange and there was a full ARPG part of it which went on outside the game, act 1 was my favorite
There is a mod that turns the game's act 1 into a proper roguelike. Also Slay the Spire and it's many alikes are a recommendation if you liked this.
ok. so if I'm going to play a game against Francis I should pick this one.
44:05 Noooooo! LEARN THE RULES!
seek the ultimate combo
Hey Francis, so happy to see you playing one of my favorite games of all time. I highly recomend sticking with the game all the way to the end, even though your first playthrough can be kinda long but it is 100% worth it. I recomend expolring and game and what it can offer. You can get very creative with your deck by combining certian sigals together to make very fun/broken cards. But most importanly enjoy the game as you progres because you can only play it for the first time once.
Echo?
@@tree_eats oops typo
Just one tip wich should be useful, you can use the campfire to intentionally destroy a card by letting it be eaten
Mantis can straight first turn win if you place it properly so it has 2 empty spaces on either side in front of it.
Also I don't think Francis quite realizes that the card game is actually just the distraction that progresses the primary game story away from the table.
This game feels so weird without music... please put it on D;
Just a combo that I found good was to get a wolf combine them together and give it mantis or mantis God ability and the flying ability.... you'll love the amount of broken this is
45:30 gg FJ, you turned a turn 1 win to a crushing loss haha
24:30 If you put down Francis and sacraficed larvae to get the ant you'd insta-win
Love you, Francis, but having never played this one before, it feels like you're not seeing the obvious things here. I know you said you'd be playing this on the side, but it feels like you're approaching this game after not having slept for 36 hours.
Typical Francis, op on Excel calculating best ratios, but completely misses the elephants in the room
Make sure to search around the cabin some more
I got this game after the last episode. I have never had so much fun with a deck builder game before. Even if I have no idea what I'm doing still😂
When a card has flying, it attacks straight to the character, it doesn't do any damage to other cards. That is why the bees "don't do any damage". They are doing direct damage to the other player, instead of doing damage to opposing cards
Oops... Thought you could do this one with lucky charms and whisky, eh?
40:20 You've got to be trolling. Who are you, and what did you do with Tactical Genius Francis?
Yeah, heart is health. The other is attack, so mantis is 3 each way
46:00 Ooh, FJ has TWO cards with double attack. If he buffs either of them with Fly, Stink, or Dive, he'll might even be able to beat the final boss.
46:10 *facepalm* The Wolf is not a defensive card.... Try not to feel bad when you figure it out. It takes awhile to figure out the interactions.
I think I can win this game when playing against FJ...
Could you have sacrifised your two cards in front of the traps, in order to let them stay there and block new creatures? Then you could have saved up some cards before starting the fight again.
Ep1? Do you mean Ep2?
@FJ; those puzzles you forced your way through would teach you how to use mantis
Here's a vague tip for you - this game punishes over-commitment
I think people are captured in those cards...
The game is getting more strange
Once there is no war crimes to do Francis just does not know how to play the game
@FJ: I restarted this game after I figured out the mechanics. It really is better the second time.
You should observe your cards, especially the bees generated by a specific beehive, I won’t spoil but you should discover combos
This is less of a systems game, but more of a story game suprisingly. A rarity to see on this channel. Good experience to have though :)
Really recommend you to try Slay the Spire if you get into card games like this.
Flying creatures ignore opposing enemies, unless they also have flying
Unless they have the flying shield. Two fliers will both ignore each other.
You need to always at least draw the squirrels several times I'm sure you just passed your turn and drawing from your pile your definitely not going to be able to use them if you don't have enough squirrels to use for resources you're not going to last with a small deck of 1-2 bld or bne cards
For some hints Markiplier did a good series on this game.
Good luck
The coyote didnt die because flying just went over it.
I would have just sacrificed the bee for the wolf since you had a squirrel you didnt use that round.
Also i swear you played this game when it was new....i must be going crazy. This is a bit of a "meta' game.
I'm halfway through - does he figure out flying?
52:35 looks like stoat and stinkbug... changed
For anyone interested in buying this game after watching this video: know that the game completely changes genre and art-style into something way worse the first time you complete a successful run, SO BUYER BEWARE! It's not advertised at all and is super disappointing, but happens juuuust after the point where you can get a Steam refund 💀
please turn on the music a little , it feels like the game is plain without the music, also tips never try to block but try to win faster , blocking and attacking at the same time is much harder instead try block with squirrel while you keep attacking and last tip never skip a turn with a boss
I also binged the game, liked act 1 more, and managed to create super OP cards
Kaycee’s mod is for you ! A lot of hard and fun challenges, you will love it
trapper boss fight without the music is so underwhelming
nice
40:22 you can sacrifice most things I believe even the Smoke?😑
If on the off chance FJ sees this I am fairly certain you can stand up at any time out of combat? oh also you changed something in the cabin at some point in this video during combat. wont tell where or what but you even sort of responded to it... lol
Damn Francis drink some whiskey and relax, way too many miss plays
When does Francis learn how flying works?
Keep episodes like this. It is fun to watch.
Wait wait wait hold on where is the real episode 1?
Never minds I found it
EDIT: FJ is already starting to figure this stuff out, but I already made the comment so it stays.
Alright, spoiler free game mechanic tip for FJ. Your opponent has limited cards. You can't see his deck, but the deck for each fight is finite, just like yours.
Sometimes you are better off aiming for counter plays than rush plays. Wait till he plays a card, then counter that card. In that first fight, if you had waited to play the Possum and Stoat, you could have beaten the Wolf Cub by pitting it against the Stoat instead of the Possum. You could have stalled the Wolf by blocking it with squirrels, which would still earn you bones without needing to sacrifice a card yourself.
There are three ways to win:
1) Rush/Alpha Strike. Get a bunch of cards and damage out quickly, win early. This requires a good deck and some luck. For example, if you get 5 damage on one card somehow, and play it on the first turn, that's an instant win. (This is usually unreliable towards the end of runs due to deck bloat.)
2) Counter play. Don't worry about dealing player damage, and don't play cards unless it's to counter a card already in play. For example, in your first fight of this video, you could have killed the wolf cub if it had gone up against the 1/3 Stoat instead of the 1/1 Possum. Once the opponent is out of cards, it's much easier to deal overkill damage for extra teeth.
3) Stall. If the opponent has a 1/1 flyer in a lane, and you don't kill that flyer, he can't replace it with a 3/2 wolf. In the case of an endless tie, the opponent will offer a truce.
At 28:50, why not just put francis to the left and end the game?
Man’s killed the goat that gives three blood per round and just got one back the casting cost 😂😂
The goat only gives 3 blood when you sacrifice it.
the misplays on this made it unwatchable, were you high when recording it?
Its ok, everyone. He'll get there. We're watching someone's first playthrough and this game very heavily knowledge based
Let’s go
any chance we get a lets play on the new Oxygen Not Included DLC ?
Would not be Francis if he was reading the information the game provides.
Spoiler.

Try to get a ringworm fed to the villagers at the camp fire. Amazing.
Pointless Comment
stand up and use the wolf totem to get the knife. use the knife to win a game and get the top left eye. this eye will show you how to unlock the clock and get the last 2 items to beat the game
Why are you trying to spoil the game for people that haven't played it before?
Francis, it seems that most of the difficulty is the direct result of not reading the cards. The card gimmicks are designed so matches don't need to be brute forced -player is at a disadvantage for that approach. Think of card abilities being more like psycasts in Rimworld.
