Ohh no I meant like everyone here agree she is pretty, it doesn't have to related 100 years of beauty. Like a fan appreciation showcase kind of thing. I hope this makes sense.
I would love to hear Cut's story. How did you guys come to be? How was it formed and who formed it? Maybe a crew tour or office/studio tour??? Love y'all!!
I agree with Chan that, as an anthropologist or any other researcher, it's really important to be aware of your personal bias and identify that. I know what this means for me as a Cuban refugee; this is part of my identity and part of the framework that shapes the way I interact with the world
Marina, you're beautiful! 😍 You're an embodiment of what makes hapas, specifically half-European, half-Asian people pretty. On that note, my question is do you guys ever plan on doing a series on mixed peoples, not necessarily 100 Years of Beauty? I know for some countries like Cuba, you've already included some individuals, but it would be nice to see more!
regardless of country or political leaning, it's always saddening when there are people in those countries (younger people in particular) who see their dictators with rose-tinted glasses because they made the trains run on time or improved the economy or whatever fucking excuse they can think of that justifies throwing people out of a helicopter
Esta Fortaleza thank you. I find it disrespectful to those who fought for our country's democracy whenever I read comments or hear this apologists debunking Marcos' monstrosity. 👍
I don't know why other people don't want to recognize the atrocities that had transpired during the martial law. I was not yet born during that time but I got myself informed (with facts!)
I loved how long the Puerto Rican/NYC video was. I know that the videos being short is important and part of the series but I would love to see videos that are even 30 seconds to 1 minute longer. You put so much work into it, you should show it off!
I took a cultural anthropology class my first semester of college. The one thing that I will always remember from that class is. When my professor said that there is no such thing as "races" but instead one HUMAN race in which we vary.
Marina looks so great in this, (she looks great usually, she looks a bit more great today haha) that I want a 100 years of beauty USA 3 about asian american beauty, featuring Marina! :D
It would be nice if you could feature more African countries such as Ghana, Somalia, Benin, or maybe Seychelles. Only Egypt, Ethiopia, and Kenya have been featured so far; that is only 3 out of 54 countries.
Well said Chris. Well said! It was very eloquent , most often, us as viewers are quick to say our two cents, without stopping and thinking, about why you or someone makes a comment we don't agree with. Lesson, I took a way, was there are two sides to every story;
I have so much respect for you guys! If you could ever, PLEASE do Great Britain with a split screen of Wales, Scotland, and England! Keep up the work! 😊🇬🇧
I was in Seattle for my birthday on Saturday and I'm pretty sure I saw Marina at Pike Place??? But she looked like she was on a mission so I didn't stop her lol, I fangirled quite hard to myself tee-hee ^_^
I love this video series and Chris is awesome. So professional and composed and still really likable. Keep up the good work! I'm actually from Israel and found the videos you made really respectful and well thought out. Good job on the direction Marina, beautiful production value!
Is it possible to feature: 1. Macklemore 2. Pewdiepie and Marzia 3. Michelle Phan on 100 Years of Beauty? Do you think the Italy video would be remade, since the subject felt more about Italian fashion designer preferences than Italian beauty concepts and how socioeconomic factors such as Mussolini and the "Anni de Piombo" affected fashion and beauty standards. I mean, opinions on the Moschino look do not fully represent the contemporary Italian look.
Would be wonderful if Chris Chan from CUT made a 100 years of beauty: Dominican Republic!!!!! Would love to see more of the representation of Dominican women throughout the ages✨❤️🇩🇴 P.S: love your videos, Chris Chan you’re doing amazing!!!!✨💕💕💕
Two questions: Why does 100 Years of Beauty start in the 1910s? Is it simply because of the 100th anniversary of the First World War (I know the first video was uploaded in 2014)? Or is there a deeper explanation in choosing that as the starting point? Which leads me to my second question: will the series stop once we arrive at 2020, since it wouldn't be a 100 years?
Thanks for answering (some of) my questions. I have another one. Have there been themes that have surprised you during periods of increased nationalization, or do they differ widely between cultures and eras? Is there an aesthetic of nationalization?
I would love it if you would do Iceland next. In the 20th century (1900- ) Icelanders saw many changes and fast. We started under the rule of Denmark for one and the way people lived at the turn of the 1900 was day and night (many people lived in turf-houses) from the way live was in lets say 1940 and onward. Plus Icelanders and Icelandic women are known to be very strong minded and quirky to say the least. so be brave and do Iceland next. There are Icelandic societies all over America willing and able to help you.
It might not be that easy to research, but it would be cool if you could do a video on mixed-race people for a certain country. Places that were colonized or that have a long history of interracial marriages might be good.
Love all your videos! How did you end up specialising into the Anthropological field you're in in making these videos? I'm just starting Anthropology as a major at University, with my primary inspiration being from watching these videos and being fascinated with the political, cultural and social backgrounds of change from around the word. It would be awesome to follow a path similar to yours in research since its a thought provoking and topical field. I notice you often say you are a visual anthropologist - what exactly does that mean, and how did you come to be that?
Holy crap!! a one minute video is thirteen fourteen hour of work....those equipment they have must be junk and break a lot.....did I mention how special the name Marina is that's a wonderful name
You can! Do a research on a country you want to see - and give it to them. If it's good enough, they'll accept it! Trust me, this is coming from someone who went through this! :)
I wish you tackled how Western European and/or Nordic countries' videos always are used wrongly to promote Islamophobia and to also accentuate the idea that White women are superior in some way & how it has become a tool for the Neo-nazi propaganda. AND How will you tackle the splits on 2 fronts in the Indian subcontinent after the 1940s? Like, does Pakistan and Bangladesh 100 yob get to show the split of West and East Pakistan in the same video with 2 models, or do videos on the Punjab region to show the split of West Pakistan and Indian Punjab & separately East Pakistan and Indian Bengal.
Since 100 YOB was a huge sucess there is a lot of similar videos on youtube. What do you think about them? Do you watch them or think that it's just a copy? If you enjoy one of these videos, do you think about making your own version or you think that this is pointless because that person already did a good job? Lots of love! :)
That pro-Marcos comment made me so angry. So many promising young people disappeared overnight and were killed, many running for latin honors in their universities.. There's so much more to talk about but I don't want to rant and have some Marcos apologist start a flame war thread in response to my comment.
Ok! If you come to México, specifically to Gto., you are going to be my guests...and if you are interested to make a video about moms with a lot of grooves, scars, etc. I could be your model 😀...I'm not a model actually but I'd like to 😥
Hey Cut ! I normally ask for a 100 years of beauty : Tunisia, but I came up with another country (2 in fact)in mind and wondered how you will handle it. The first being the Congo (Both of them) Will you use the same model for both and do a screen split at some point? Also another one : Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia wasn't always here (Croatia was a nazi puppet state in the 40s and they split in the 90s / 00's, so how would you handle a 100 years of beauty : Croatia/ Serbia/ Montenegro/Macedonia/Bosnia/Kosovo and Slovenia
As a Filipino, I agreed to the era of dictatorship Marcos inflicted unto the nation but I tend to lean to the theory that he meant well at first granted he was an intelligent and innovative at that time period but started to decline after the power and corruption went into his and his allies brains. Yes, the Philippines greatly improved but suffered the worst human rights violation and single person corruption in its inception. As a country of extreme opinions, people tend to overlook the other side in favor of the more appealing side (for them). The Philippines is a divided country mostly influenced by extreme sensationalism. Personally, the media and social media the population consume unregulated makes the predominantly poor population susceptible to biased and generally wrong journalism Which brings us to other societal issue that is blatantly overlooked Filipinos greatly love the epic struggle of poor vs the rich and mostly applied it to every story the media projects. As a country plagued with poverty, it is common for people to channel their frustrations on something. It maybe drugs, faith, media, political views, and etc. People would have stronger opinions if they feel thats the only thing they have control over. We always feel cheated on when someone's life is better than our own. As for the repetitive narrative, any person(especially the president) who wishes to help the constantly dissatisfied masses struggles to pursue any beneficial work or legislations if the one he's helping shifts opinions and sides when one does something they don't approve of. What we need is national unity and humanism but we also need to improve on our own sense of accountability and personal contributions to development rather than relying on the minority to improve out lives. (Long-ass essay. May not be throughly composed)
the Marco's I was watching a film a real live film of them taking the Marco's out of that country they stole money from their people they she has a lot of shoes they showed shoes on that place they said they got a lot of bad things they may have done some good things but it doesn't equate for them doing a lot of bad it still was a bad thing and they need to be removed a lot of people were hurt by what they did I don't know what they did but I heard that a lot of people got hurt I don't know how
the lady is so pretty. she should be a model in one the 100 year videos
They should do a 100 years of beauty featuring Marina Taylor. I think alot of people would enjoy that.
Dominque Rex Dude, she hasn't been alive for that long. Do you mean of her ethnic backgrounds? If so, I'm sure they've already covered them.
Chris, your eloquence, intelligence and diplomacy are heart warming. So lovely, both of you.
I agree with Chan that, as an anthropologist or any other researcher, it's really important to be aware of your personal bias and identify that. I know what this means for me as a Cuban refugee; this is part of my identity and part of the framework that shapes the way I interact with the world

perfect explanation
I absolutely love Chris' insights on these topics. I learn so much from him and I can listen to him talk all day.
I don't know why other people don't want to recognize the atrocities that had transpired during the martial law. I was not yet born during that time but I got myself informed (with facts!)
Lost Wanderer Youre my kind of guy. Or girl. idk
Marina's eye look just UNREAL

I'm a Filipino and just... really #yikes at the Marcos apologists.

I'd love to see more 100YOB episodes with native American tribes. Love the series!!
MARINA'S HAIR BLINDED ME!
Whose the girl on the right!?!? she's a babe!!! keep up the great work cut!
Only 2-4 weeks? That's actually much less time than I would've thought. You guys are awesome!
It would be nice if you could feature more African countries such as Ghana, Somalia, Benin, or maybe Seychelles. Only Egypt, Ethiopia, and Kenya have been featured so far; that is only 3 out of 54 countries.
I think (hope) that they'll do more this year.

He was way too soft on that Marco-lover.
All 100 YOB's models should compete together on the miss universe contest!
That would be epic!!
OMG THANKS FOR TAKING MY QUESTION GUYS!! And @Chris let me know if you're teaching another class soon I'd love to take one if I have time :)
Would be wonderful if Chris Chan from CUT made a 100 years of beauty: Dominican Republic!!!!! Would love to see more of the representation of Dominican women throughout the ages✨❤️🇩🇴

Rebekka Björnsdóttir The next one is an East/South-East Asian one from the picture they showed on Instagram but hopefully after.
Are you guys planning on doing any lesser known Caribbean countries like St. Thomas, where I'm from lol, or St. Maarten?
It might not be that easy to research, but it would be cool if you could do a video on mixed-race people for a certain country. Places that were colonized or that have a long history of interracial marriages might be good.

Can you guys do Romania 🇷🇴 soon!!
I can't believe there are Imelda Marcos' stans.

Well its true, Marcos was a dictator. "The Philippines was safe under his leadership"? hahahahahaha funniest thing I heard. Try harder, mary.
