I did a three hour walking FOOD tour. Went to 6 different restaurants/bars. Had mufango..pina colada..local icecream, pastries and fish! As we walked all over San Juan our guide gave us the culture and history too! Loved it.
We LOVED San Juan!!! Such a unique and wonderful area to stroll around, lots of cats and cultural stuff there!! I cannot wait to get back there some day!
The last ime we were in San Juan, we walked on the path around the edge of the island. and ended up at the El Morro fort. The walk was absolutely breath taking. There seems to be dozens of cats along the path. San Juan has set up a sanctuary of sorts for them. Some are very friendly and some are stand offish. Anyway, you are right there by the ocean and the waves are bashing up against the rocks. We are going back on our next cruise and we will do this again. BTW, San Juan deserves a lot better score than 5.
That trolley or tram that runs around is helpful but it was so loud that we could not hear what the stops were so had no idea where we were. Need to get back there. The port guides that you are doing is immensely helpful! Thanks for doing these!
We, in January 2020, are doing the Viking West Indies Exploration leaving from San Juan. Very helpful information. It’s such a nice short flight to SJ for us East coast folks. Atlanta to SJ. Thank you for your content!!
That's awesome! We can never find much in the way of cheap flights to San Juan, but there are some great looking itineraries for ships sailing from there!!
We enjoy your videos including this one on San Juan as we will be going there next year! The ride on the sailboat looked good until we saw the specifics so maybe a walking/shopping tour is more likely. Good to know about the cell phone service! We also tried to schedule a flight to San Juan and start the cruise there but Miami was far less expensive for us anyways. We also would like to tour the various churches while we are in San Juan. Thanks, as always, for your insights Dee and Jay!!
There is a beautiful tropical garden we stumbled across. Walking distance from Pier. We spent a lot of time sitting by the fountains and the amazing flora. Just takes your breath away. It is adjacent to Fuente de la Herencia de las Américas
If you are a foodie, next time in Old San Juan stop in a little Shop call Spicy Caribbee, it"s across from the Bautista Cathedral on Calle Del Cristo. While my friends are shopping for jewelry and purses I'm in there buy spices and herbs, they also have the best vanilla.
We did the Amazing Grace Pirate Cruise on our last cruise. It was a pretty average harbor tour, but on an interesting vessel. The included drinks were really good too (it was like a spicy rum punch, really good). We had a good time with it and talked to some interesting people, but I also think it was a little overpriced for what it was.
It looked interesting, almost like our pirate adventure from Aruba, but not quite as over-the-top on the theme, ha ha... slightly pricey, but glad to hear it was at least somewhat fun!! :P
I stayed at the Caribe Hilton in September and of course had to have a few Pina Coladas. :) It's a beautiful resort. I actually preferred their new take called a Sparkling Colada, made with coconut rum, sparkling wine and bitters. I didn't realize the cruise ship ports are in Old San Juan! We'll be there next week on a port stop (!), so this is super handy. I didn't get an excursion in San Juan so I think we'll just get off the ship and explore. Thank you!
We did the mixology and salsa excursion on our last stop in san juan. Not sure I'd do it again. Not horrible but would rather do something else with my time there. Really do like to roam around old san juan.
We've always had so much fun roaming around, we've never gone for an excursion just yet, but maybe sometime we'll give one a try, hah... not sure exactly what we're doing when we get back there this fall... probably more wandering!! :P
Nice review! But from the government building, El Capitolio, if you walk down the street for about 10 minutes, you will walk into the beach area named El Escambron. For your next trip!!
Hah, we really enjoy San Juan, but have to rate it on how much fun you can have *at* the port (which would be a zero for San Juan since there's nothing inside the actual port building, ha ha...) but I expanded my rating a little bit because the actual city is so fun to explore!! :P
Another free option is to walk the sea walk just outside the old city wall. Fairly flat and you can walk all the way over to El Morro. They used to have an entrance to the Fort, but that got closed. Tons of cats and iguanas. You can start it near the port or there is a gate part way up.
Hi you guys! I've been trying to determine if San Juan has rickshaws, pedicab, whatever available from ship to port. I'll be renting a scooter while in port but, I've heard that it may be a bit of a walk depending exactly where we dock. Any info you might have is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
There's a place called Scryer Rum within easy walking distance of the cruise port, but if you're after something like Bacardi, that would require a cab ride, as it's a good bit out of town.
Do you have any advice for a short port day? Our projected day is only 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. And you know that getting off and back on will make that more of a 8:30 to 1:00 kind of day. Would Pinones beach or El Yunque even be in the cards?
That sounds like a super short schedule to pull off something like that... I'm thinking a ship excursion, just to make sure the ship doesn't float away without you having a chance to get back... yow!! :P Or just a nice wander around on your own in Old San Juan, the forts, etc... staying close to the ship...
We found the Fortress at El Morro far more interesting than San Cristobal. One of the guides there told us about the day the US Navy shelled the fort during the Spanish American War as they attacked San Juan looking for the Spanish fleet. There is still shrapnel in one of the walls.
Oh, I'm definitely going to pet some Puerto Rican cats in less than three weeks. I'm guessing that Umbrella Street is down right now because of the hurricane. I'm hoping it will be back up before we get there because my daughter will definitely want to add it to her Instagram.
From what I heard, they removed umbrella street during the protesting over the governor, but now that he's out of office, I wasn't sure when or if they would put it back up. You're probably right about it not being up because of the storm now though!!
Hey, great info!! Just wondering as we are doing a cruise in April. When you are saying Old SAN Juan, is it actually in walking distance from cruise ship port or would you need a cab? In particular the famous chapel on the cliff? Was that cathedral you mentioned walkable? Thank you for any information
Yep yep, Old San Juan is what they call the town area next to the pier. Couple of blocks walking and you're there in the middle of everything! We'll be back there in December, and are hoping to hit Umbrella Street, some churches, and some new things for us!! :D
Love your videos! I am planning to stop here in April and I have been concerned about safety overall. Most advice is to not walk around in town, but it seems you guys had great fun. Did you feel safe here? My husband and I will be with our 10 year old daughter and it seems like my guard is way up on this cruise for that reason. Sounds like so much fun to walk around and really see the whole place.
Oh wow, we've never had any issues walking around Old San Juan, even in the dark. I mean, keep your guard up and be aware of your surroundings, just like any big city you'd walk around in anywhere. But we've always felt super welcomed and safe there.
My wife and I are really looking forward to our trip to San Juan. We’re both crazy cat people and were wondering if anyone sells cat food for all the kitties or if we should just bring our own 🐱
We paid $4 when we were there, and it gave access to both forts, but we only explored San Cristobal. But yep... nominal admission fee being that it's a US National Park, and the rate is rising to $10 as of 2020...
Oh wow, I always think French when I think of New Orleans, but I forget just how much history and influence they've had from different countries through the years...
The beach and watersports are not something that is important to us. walking around enjoying the history of a place is. So my rating would be higher then yours.
We love San Juan for sure! The "free & frugal" rating was originally meant as a rating of how much fun you could have without leaving the security gates at each port, but that would have given San Juan a zero, ha ha... we had to expand the area a little bit to include the city... :P

Sounds like what we did with Flavors Of San Juan! We got to make our own mofongo and everything. Such a cool area to explore food for sure!! :D
We LOVED San Juan!!! Such a unique and wonderful area to stroll around, lots of cats and cultural stuff there!! I cannot wait to get back there some day!

Loving this series and all of your information. We live in South Florida and watching Dorian closely.
Still loving this series! Thanks guys! And I can’t help but wave at the Adipose every time I see him ;)
He's a cute little blobby blob, ha ha... :P
We took a walking and eating tour in San Juan. It was awesome! Such a beautiful place and great food.
Oh this is perfect! Stopping here in November. Thank you!!
I when to San Juan this year and I fell in love with the city. we did the old and new San Juan city tour
Nice! We may eventually opt for some sort of guided tour, but we've had fun just making our own walking tours so far, ha ha...
I've been to Puerto Rico and I've seen the umbrellas
Casa Bacardi tour and el Morro tours are great
That trolley or tram that runs around is helpful but it was so loud that we could not hear what the stops were so had no idea where we were. Need to get back there. The port guides that you are doing is immensely helpful! Thanks for doing these!
Truth! Ha ha... we had to keep peeking out the window to see if we were at El Morro, since we could barely hear anything... it was an adventure!! :D
We would be nice pirates! Oooh Dee, you are the sweetest!
We, in January 2020, are doing the Viking West Indies Exploration leaving from San Juan. Very helpful information. It’s such a nice short flight to SJ for us East coast folks. Atlanta to SJ. Thank you for your content!!

I loved San Juan on my July cruise. On my next visit, I would definitely do an excursion like a city tour.

A 4!! Really? I love walking around San Juan. We plan beach/pool days on other islands. I give it a solid 8. LOL!!

We haven’t noticed any at San Juan before. The pier is usually much shorter there, so there doesn’t seem to be much need for them.
These are very helpful videos
See this is why I depend on you guys!!! I was going to pay extra to cruise on symphony with this port but I see it’s not worth it. Thank you ☺️ 😊
How can I get to the Rum distillery
There's a place called Scryer Rum within easy walking distance of the cruise port, but if you're after something like Bacardi, that would require a cab ride, as it's a good bit out of town.
While in San Juan, go to the Haitian Gallery (there are two locations)
Oh nice, thanks so much!! :D
El Moro is a great fort to explore

El Morro always seemed a little more interesting, so we may have to eventually go inside... maybe when we're back there this fall... woohoo!! :D
Where do you get your maps for these port guides? Looking at San Jaun
Usually a Google'd image, or sometimes a scan of a map we've picked up in port or on a ship. Most like Google though, ha ha!! :P

Enjoyed
With the hurricane coming I wonder what’s going to happen with cruises
MIraculous Journey they may change itineraries
True, most times they'll just work around the storms... yow!!
ParoDeeJay wanna go😂 let’s book a cruise going to San Juan😅
I navigated in the Mediterranean get off the cruise taxi, bus or walk over 30 minutes.
Great job❤️
For all my paranormal lovers they now have a Ghosts and Legends tour!
Look at all the Ships on a Stick behind you! :)

I wonder if a national park pass would be recognized.....
Great video. # Roamingwithrover
San Juans architecture reminds me of New Orleans, New Orleans has the Spanish influence.
Oh wow, I always think French when I think of New Orleans, but I forget just how much history and influence they've had from different countries through the years...
El yunque
Can I get a copy of that map please?
Love ya cat person myself
