I've snatched a AM Performer Precision a few months ago and ist a blast. Two weeks ago I went to my local guitar shop to look after another Precision for Flats. Played three different Players, one American Professional I, one American Professional II, a Vintera, a Vintage 1978 (almost broke my back, friggin heavy) and two Custom Shop Precisions. Plus some Squier Precisions, Jaguars, Jazz Basses and for the fun of it short scale Mustangs and Gretsch Junior Jets. Oh, and there also was this AM Performer Precision in OW - it blew all others out of the water. But I've saved my money and will look for a used one in LPB. tl;dr: Great Bass!

I’m a guitar player that’s been playing more bass recently and I joined a cover band as a bass player. I was looking for the right bass to compliment the MIM Fretless Player I bought a few months ago, which is also white but with a white pick guard. It was a toss up between this Performer or the Player Plus, which I liked because of the price point, but I didn’t want active controls. I ended buying this exact model after watching your review. There were many I watched but your review kind of solidified my decision. It really is a killer bass and is gonna see the stage quit a bit. It was the right choice for me without breaking the bank. That's the bass I would get should I finally decide to graduate from the Player Series Precision one that Fender currently has out. I've always dug that particular pickup configuration, like having the best of both worlds without needing to buy two separate basses. If Fender can produce a left-handed/3-tone Sunburst/maple fretboard version of this model, then they've pretty much reeled me in as far as I'm concerned. Top-notch review, by the way! ;-)
I just bought one too , ( in sunburst / rosewood ), but I have to point out. You said new for 2019....mine has a 2018 serial number. I would also mention, don't remove the strings and pick guard to adjust the truss rod...just loosen the strings and remove the neck...that's how it was meant to be done. Much faster and easier.
Truth Filter For RUclips Fender suggests removing the strings which is why I said that. Whereas the models were first available in December of 2018, this series premiered at NAMM in 2019.
After years and years of noodling around on cheap instruments I finally bit the bullet and bought one of these. I'm no pro, but it's a beast! So much better than anything I've played before, well worth the money!
Rumblin Man I already have a P Bass, so I tell myself I don’t need it, but I’d be lying if I told you I never wished I could blend in some of a bridge pickup. Seems to be a perfect combo.

Thanks for reviewing a rosewood option! The truss rod adjustment is at the neck heel as opposed to the headstock and you find that simpler? Did I hear that correctly?
Well, i proudly own a Sandberg P. I used to play a Player Series P, but the fretwork on the Mexican instruments is like it's on all ,,cheap" instruments: bad! You cannot have a low string action without fret buzz. Since i'm used to play my Sandberg which built quality is boutique like, i have a hard time with American made instruments because they very often lack quality control and precision. OK so I bought one last week in 3 tone sunburst and rosewood fingerboard. It plays and sounds great and has a wide variety if classic tones that will more than meet my needs at shows and studio recordings. Unfortunately that's where it ends. Extremely obvious where the joints are terrible. So obvious where the joints are. 3. Looks like there is a magic marker line under the clear coat on the front of the bass. This one should have been rejected and sent to the line for a paint finish. 4. The Fender logo on the headstock is off and part of the A on the word Bass is missing 5. There is a tiny divit on the back of the neck 6. There is a small divit in the rosewood on the 6th fret. Bringing it back today and will probably take a shot on ordering another one. May go safe on a paint finish this time. Went with this one over the Professional II because of the added J pickup and better input jack. The Pro II does have a better bridge, a more classic feel and look and comes with a case which I really do note care about since I have plenty of them.

David Jones actually many of the features are a step up from the American Special series that came before it, and even from the American Standard series.
bflo1000 the American Standards were a slightly higher series than the American Performer series. However, I owned a couple American Standard basses and I like this one better. I think it’s easier to play and has more to offer. Just one man’s opinion though!
Now that is a great sounding bass! I am switching from from guitar to bass and it will either be this one or the Duff McKagan Deluxe precision bass. Both sound amazing so this is going to be a very hard decision to make but, what I do know is that it has to be a p bass.
Just got one delivered and it’s great, BUT, it has an issue out of the box.....argh! The volume for the J pickup makes all sorts of noises when you touch it. Anyone else had an issue like this?
@@RumblinMan Yes, they are collecting it tomorrow and once they have it back they’re going to send out a replacement. Shame as it’s beautiful and sounds great until you touch the pots 😂
I'm a little tired of "P basses" that are actually PJs. Seems like Fender loves to do that with all their top end basses these days. The Elite/Ultra series is the same way. That leaves me with a noisy back pickup I'll never use.
Sure the American series play slightly nicer, but the price tag is so not worth it. I can mod a Squire PJ and get it to the point where for me it surpasses any American model. Also, the placement of the trussrod access for these models are just stupid. Having to remove the pickguard every time to make neck adjustments will eventually strip the holes for the pickguard screws.
Sounds really good, but I would pick a G&L bass if I could only have one. Specifically a L-2000, or L-2500 if I was gonna go 5 string. I feel Fenders are overpriced right now. Just my personal opinion.
Rumblin Man I didn’t mean to sound like I was putting Fender down. I just feel like G&L is a better bang for your buck. Lots more color options, especially with the American made ones. The Tribute models are made in Indonesia. I’ve had Tributes & an American made G&L. I really like them both. I currently have a JB-2 Tribute Jazz Bass that is my main bass right now. It’s the one I’m most comfortable with. Yeah, if you get to check out any G&L, do it! I dont play electric guitar, but G&L’s electric guitars are pretty cool too. Just sayin’. 👍🏻 Catch ya later, dude.
www.Marko right. I feel ya. Sure, for one thing, the Fender is a much better-built bass than any of the Squier PJ basses (the only current Squier PJ’s being the Affinity and the Vintage Modified). I’ve used the Squier Vintage Modified PJ, and I don’t like it. I tended to think that the pickups on that bass sounded even worse than these, and that the build quality on the Squier was below my expectations. That particular model is also prone to electric issues. The American Performer is extremely well-built with excellent woods and hardware; they also made it easy to make action adjustments. Where they messed up, though, is that, like we’re talking about, the pickups just don’t sound good. That means if you drop $1200 on the bass, you’re also gonna drop $200 on some good pickups, and that’s a total of $1400 dropped... for that kind of cash, it would be MUCH better to go with a Lakland Skyline 44-64 Custom PJ, which is superior to both the Fender and the Squier in terms of feel and sound. If you’re looking for a slightly more budget-friendly PJ bass, however, I recommend the Sire Marcus Miller P7 4-string.
@@RumblinMan Lakland sounds incredible! Excellent suggestion! It is always great to read these things from people like you, who have tried many different instruments that may be unavailable to everybody. Me personally, I am glued to Yamaha BB. They have something special. Sire, for sure, makes great and cheap instruments for what they offer but, for me, their tone is a little bit generic sounding. Also, thank you for those comparisons! You have cleared some things for me :)

That leaves me with a noisy back pickup I'll never use.
rome8180 Definitely inconvenient for people who don’t want to use the Bridge pickup!
@@RumblinMan Love then don't by it, by a standard P bass. I mean WTF??
@@charlesbr7684 You’re a little late to this conversation.
@@RumblinMan yea lol.
is it a jazz neck ?
More of a Precision neck.
@@RumblinMan thanks for the info !
I have a mim pj offset mustang. Is this bass a huge upgrade from that?
chuuwee C. It is.
I know this is a c shape neck but is it wide like the standard P bass or is it narrow at the nut like a jazz bass? Could anyone tell me?
Definitely a P Bass neck. Didn't feel like a Jazz at all.
Thank you
That Guy anytime bro!
No graphite reinforcement bars in the neck.
The Lord bless you too Rumblin Man
Rodimus Prime thank you!
AGH ... you made me buy one!
That was the goal!! Haha. Hope you love it. 😃
@@RumblinMan By the way, is that "tube drive" as in the green Effectrode pedal? Or was that the Zoom ?
@@donaldswan1587 it was a simulation in the ZOOM. But same type of sound.
The Greasebucket tone circuit is a no-go for me. Very un-P-like.
For the same price get the Duff McKagan Deluxe precision bass
The bass comes with a T handle Hex wrench with a ball end.
FENDER PRECISION BASS WITH MAPLE FRET 4- STRING.
Классный бас, то же такой хочу прикупить.
You got mad squabbles!
winner winner chicken dinner ;-)
I had the Maple neck with the Blue body and traded it in for an American Professional in black with Rosewood neck.
RichardC Autorina nice! Gotta love a good rosewood fretboard.
I had a performer and sent it back for a player. Didn't like the neck or pickups.
Sounds really good, but I would pick a G&L bass if I could only have one. Specifically a L-2000, or L-2500 if I was gonna go 5 string. I feel Fenders are overpriced right now. Just my personal opinion.
Chris Davis thanks for the kind words bro! I haven’t played G&L much but would love to check one out.
Chris Davis thank you bro. Actually I’ve been interested in checking out a G&L tele for quite some time!
This thing sounds like Squier.
www.Marko yeah, honestly the Yosemite PJ pickups aren’t my fav.
@@RumblinMan
The 1200$ price was a surprise.
Can you specify the advantages comparing to Squier? The sound, for sure, is not.
www.Marko right.
@@RumblinMan
Lakland sounds incredible! You have cleared some things for me :)
www.Marko so glad I could assist!! Yamaha BB’s are great too!
G and L GL1000 far superior
Fingerstyle on the neck pup.
Fingerstyle on both pups.
Slap on the bridge pup.
