Here's what I think. I think Barbie as a toy line has really improved in terms of diversity, and that the made to move body is a huge improvement over past articulation. However, I do think quality control isn't as good as it used to be. I think Mattel has got to find a way of balancing becoming more modern and progressive with producing product that is satisfying to own and collect.
Personally, my big issue is they're not making enough realistic accessories. I miss some of the tie ins and promotions Barbie used to do with companies like McDonald's, Little Debbie, and Coke. Yeah, it was corporate advertising, but I don't care, I love the ad stuff. I think there's a reason why mini brands and shopkins real littles were such big hits, kids really love the realistic groceries. I miss great playsets. Not gimmick driven pieces of junk, but playsets that look real like Barbie Fun Fixins. Great fashion designs like the fashion avenue sets or the Barbie Millicent Roberts collection are also sorely missed. I think Barbie needs to really retool the playsets and the accessory packs. I have kind of found myself being pushed towards more expensive doll lines and higher end accessories meant for larger dolls, because I don't want flimsy plastic playsets or particle board dollhouses, I want something that is going to display well and look great in photos.
I also think Mattel needs to rethink ending some of the reproduction styling in the Silkstone line. Vintage collectors and people who like that 50's 60's style are valid and there should be at least a doll a year for those collectors. Playline should be for kids, and there should be modern collector dolls, but I think we should also have space for people who are into the OG barbie aesthetic, which is very much its own thing.
Barbie is a huge brand with a long legacy of very different products. The best version of what they can be is a company that innovates and yet at the same time doesn't rush product or get so cheap on everything that there's nothing for more serious collectors to buy. Got to make great affordable toys for kids while also providing collectors with something to obsess over. And it's hard, but I know Mattel is capable of it.
One thing I think is promising is that now they've moved Barbie's collectible dolls over to the Mattel Creations site, which shows an intent to treat toy collectors of Mattel's various products across the board consistently, and to recognize that those people are collectors that are looking for product that is perhaps separate from what they're making for kids. Don't get me wrong, I collect Fashionistas too. But I think Barbie should realize that the collector dolls should compete in the collector marketplace and be on a higher level instead of just treating it like it's an extension of the playline brand. Integrity has been bringing the heat for years, and Mattel is not meeting them on that level.

You can remove lint from Ken's flocked head with a SOFT toothbrush or a brush for blush. You can gently brush off dust on the flocking. Alternatively, you can use a piece of Scotch Magic tape to dab the flocking to get rid of the lint.

👏🏼 amazing video Ethan! OMG so sad to see my Jon 😭 I’m so glad yours was not like mine. I did see another video where someone compares both original and repro Christies and original definitely has a warmer tone to her. I feel the face is missing her magical sparkle. I can’t wait to see what you have done to her. I can’t wait for my Victoria! Those boots are amazing! You are as I always say one of the sweetest kindest souls I’ve ever met in my life. Those who don’t think so can leave. I see you ☺️

Actually Mattel got lucky , because the Superstar face mold look’s great on Christie’s brown skin. Some Black people with dark-skin do have European features , so the face works… Yes the jewelry is the same as the original.

I personally love superstar christies face. We have white people in my family and my mother, a black woman, has a mix of both African and eurocentic features. Small, pointy nose, long loose curls, big lips and dark skin. I understand that the superstar christie comes from a time when Mattel really didn't care about proper representation but they're trying hard to do that now. Plus, whether intentional or not, by making christie with a eurocentic face sculpt they are providing representation to people who despite having dark skin also have eurocentic features. Plus you got to admit, the superstar sculpt is verrry cute, I'm happy it comes in a darker skin tone 😊

I am 50/50. I love the clothing from the past and some fashion choices. Specially the level of glamour or drama. Like, when i say "I wish they bring back ___" I want to see those clothes or something in a strong likeness, specially if they can be adjusted for the newer doll bodies or a homage with the new body types..
But i do wish they would reproduce certain doll houses or play sets.

Glamourous, pink and not supremely realistic with great quality. Sure she's more realistic now, but she's kind of lost her identity in the process... The Rewind dolls are an amazing return to form though :)

@barbiesGBF the black pants is made of 4 way stretch leather texture vinyl aka pleather. 4 way last very long. @mattel usually is a cheapskate and use 2 way stretch pleather that falls apart rapidly. It's due to tension in stretch and thickness of base fabric which suffocated and stress the polyurethane coating 4 way stretch allows less restriction and much thinner backing so polyurethane can breath.

  • @MaxineAndrew
    @MaxineAndrew 3 года назад +4

Superstar Christie's eyebrows are farther up from her eyes when you place them side by side; I don't know if that's affecting her impression too?
I know I prefer modern Barbies and their designs as well, despite the quality changes. :P

Mattel won’t use the superstar face in the fashionista line as that is one of the official faces for the Barbie character/mascot, and currently the mascot is using the Millie face. So they wouldn’t touch the older official Barbie mascot face sculpts for modern playline dolls.

Great review! I totally agree with your point about the slightly ashy quality of the repro Christie face. She now has a slightly more cool delicate skin undertone. It makes the warm radiant yellow dress look garish, like its wearing her rather than she wearing it. I'm going to replace that gown with one that is a cooler ash color.

I absolutely hate how greedy some people are with this line of dolls. I seen one of the dolls being sold for triple the price on ebay and there were 23 sold and another 10 still available. How is that fair? I ordered my 2 kens back in June but they still haven't shipped out because people are mass buying to resell at insane prices. It's just so ridiculous and frustrating. I just want my boys but I won't be able to get them unless i wanna pay close to $200. That's just not right.
P.s. Victoria looks like Dakota Fanning and Nicole Kidman combined lol.

I dislike the new skintone era Mattel seems to be going with like their malibu burnt orange tan, morgue pale, racist asian yellow, and ashy dark black/brown. It could be so noticeable or even that bad if not for the bad lip stick color choices and often choice of face sculpt or style. Seeing Superstar Christie with a weirdly darker skintone and white superstar face just feels wrong.
Compare her to the Looks Doll "Elle" which gave her a warm dark skintone and appropriate lip color and sculpt that isn't eurocentric. Mattel needs to actually include a diverse team who know how real ethnic people look and not the Californian idea of ethnicity. Burnt orange with bubble gum pink lips dark hair and sculpt with eurocentric features is generally what Mattel still does often. Even with great looking diverse dolls, we still fall back into the lazy depiction of ethnic people. Let people with diverse ethnicities and backgrounds deign dolls.

I usually run my dolls under hot water from my faucet, try to focus on the chin/neck area if you don't wanna get their hair wet. If you're not comfortable with that, sometimes I heat their heads up with a blowdryer on heat, thought this takes longer. This is more info than you asked for but Disney store dolls have a harder head than Mattel dolls.

I wonder if MGA ever comes under fire for lack of racial diversity considering their "one sculpt fits all" approach. 😆 Although personally I think their dolls are "raceless semi chibi humanoids", but people always wanted to identify. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Back to Barbie, the latest play line Barbie with Superstar sculpt is Toy Story 4 Barbie, I think & that's about it. 🤔 And to clean flocking, try brushing it lightly with a toothbrush(dip in & flick off the water first). Mattel's flockings are tough though, I've washed MH boys hair & theirs stayed on just fine. 👍🏻
Unlike my Flashback Fever Cade, the box warned against it but I had to wash his hair due to accumulated dust & grime from being "new old stock". Imagine my surprise when his hair is actually glued, not gelled & turned white from shampoo suds. 😱 30% of the flocking had also been lost, later 100% when I boil washed the hair in soapy water while brushing it with a toothbrush(it took a few sessions). The end result: soft hair(some are stained white by the glue though) & no flocking that left some sticky texture on the head(thank god the flocking part is painted under it). I also trashed the pleather tie, belts & bag, not a good first experience with Bratz. 😩
Yet I bought Style Starz Cloe later, she's still in box but I can see her jacket, bra & shorts cracks & peel(I want a Bratz with more articulation, eventhough her legs are black rubber). 😬 My what a long post, hope you don't fall asleep reading it. 😅

from my country is really dificult to talk about if someone have a "pure race", the mayority of the people are mixed, so for me and a lot of people, we don really have problem with the tricks of mattel faces mold, colors and eyes lips, bcs alot of people look like this(me as a example sodsdjdks) a rare mix of different races, but i can understand when they dont try and it shows and people get mad by the time.
for representation, creativity and diversity, barbie is better now, we can miss the quality in the cloths, and be critics when mattel is lazy and wrong but we have a lot of things that are better, i miss the quality and in the fantasy lines the better designs, i hate so much the toxic pink, blue, yellow trend , n-no

New collector here, enjoying your channel a ton! I give a lot of credit to Mattel for how they are catering to such a range of customers with a variety of lines. BMR1959 and Extra provide pre and post millennial fashions, and Looks have the perfect monochromatic style to act as filler. I like the idea of the throwback line, but instead of just recreating things from the past it might have been better to modernize them in an interesting and fun way.

The original Superstar Barbie (blonde) was one of my first Barbies. I loved her, and she was probably the doll I played with most. I was sad I did not get the 2009 repro, and I was looking forward to this Christie. However, the doll I got has some issues with her lips (slightly off-the-mark, stray paint above lip, and a little missing paint on teeth). Just sloppy quality control, as is often the case with modern Mattel. I also don’t like the new eyes; there is a noticeable lack of character to the face.
She is getting returned, and for the $60 Canadian she costs, I’m not going to bother trying to order a less-flawed version. The nostalgia factor isn’t high enough for me to pay a premium for this doll (Barbie Looks is $35 here, for comparison). I am crossing my fingers the Barbie Rewind series and the other dolls in the Superstar series are a bit better. I generally like modern face sculpts better than the older ones, but I do want a few retro/repro dolls for my collection, and I would rather buy new for various reasons.
