and he was smoking! Oh god, one of the greatest sins of our time.My last cigarette today with the spirit of this passionate man.Expirience of life, disciplin and deepest understsnding of music
What a marvellous performance, i didn't know this existed. All Barber's immense lyrical gift is given true value. The piano is just slightly too backwardly balanced, (fine playing also from Mr Berkowitz), to reveal all the possibilities of the interplay, but that's a small price to pay for Piatigorsky's line and dramatic power. Magnificent!
Wow! What a difference a performance can make in the perception of a work! I just came from hearing Kirschbaum and Vignoles perform this on YT, and was aware it lacked something; now I know what. With Piatigorsky and Berkowitz we have great artists who understand the sonata, and it coheres; it makes sense, its stature is much improved. It takes this strong concept to shine the best light on it, and the K.-V. duo failed, rather making it fall apart with affectations in phrasing and tempi that were too slow.
he was the greatest cellist EVER a giant who we were fortunate to have had among us.

Piatigorsky was famous for his tales, he is telling a story with his perfect playing.
Piatigorsky reveals his deep understanding of Barber's musical angularity in this piece, and his superb artistry is evident throughout.
The musician who swam across the Dnieper on his cello:-). I love it... I love G.P.
For me this is far and away the finest piece of chamber music ever to come from the pen of a composer born in the USA. A marvellous performace too.
You might try Ives' 2nd Quartet. Hoomeyow!!
Master! Thank you.
the very best of them all.
I had no idea that Piatagorsky recorded this sonata, which is one of my favorites.
Thank you so much for sharing!
Wonderful pianist, too!
