Damon is on ecstacy here. The record label boss Dave Balfe gave them E beforehand and Damon admitted to definitely taking it. That's why he's so crazy here.
Vern Black they were all massive drug addicts/boozers in the early days. I doubt they needed any help from their manager. They'd have done it anyway. Ironically, Graham Coxon was the worst. He stopped in about 1998 because he actually almost died from drink/drugs. It was that bad. The bass player was also a terrible addict. And Damon was on Cocaine and Heroin untill about 2001! Seriously, there werent many hardcore bands than these guys. They had terrible drink/drug issues
@@chrispalin4043 Erm yes there bands from the same era that were a hell of a lot more hardcore with drink and drugs than Blur! 😂😂 Ever heard of Primal Scream?? or Happy Mondays?? They would make Blur look like schoolkids with their intake!
It's odd how people react to drugs. I act almost like this without the power of ecstacy or any other substance. Maybe it's because of my young age. Maybe it might be an underlying issue. I don't know. I don't even know if acting like this without drugs is good or bad

I always knew it was lipsynching. I can understand the guitars not making a sound as they are not plugged in but how does the drummer avoid making any sounds when drumming? Does the drummer use a special type of stick (such as a rubber or foam one) or does he wave the sticks around without actually hitting the drums?
@@Diamondblade2008 I’m pretty sure TOTP used a specialist drum set, with the symbols made out of plastic and the drums muted right down. It would still make a sound, but it would be almost impossible to hear it over the playback
Right, a lesson in history. September 26th 1991 was the final Top of the Pops - at the time - to be broadcast from Broadcasting House. This was also the final show in which most of the acts mimed - with the exception of Rozalla and Sabrina Johnston. The following week - October 3rd - was the "year zero" relaunch, from Elstree - in which producer Stanley Appel insisted that ALL acts, from then on, would have to sing live. This continued until Ric Blaxill became producer in February 1994....
I knew it the first time I heard it in 1991. At the time they felt like a very good "Roses type" band which were prevalent in 1990 and 1991, and that was a good thing.
it's because it's baggy. ( I wouldnt say it's 'madchester'... for that, check "I Know", and youll notice it could be easily a track by the Happy Mondays)
Great little number from one of the premier bands of the Britpop era. I always thought that Blur had a nose in front when it came to the (press) battle with Oasis; Oasis/Noel Gallagher wrote some great stuff too, of course, but, Blur for me all day long. Paul Weller lead the pack, and, I guess Cast should get a mention too. Nice blast from the past - thanks for uploading.
Your date is right so I don't doubt the accuracy of your statement. Nirvana lore has two different versions of the tale and I was unaware of that. The other version is Kurt did get pissed because they couldn't play their instruments live and because of that he did his vocals "like Morrissey" (his description of the singing) and being very obvious amount pretending to play their instruments. Thanks for the history lesson! As an American I know very little about TOTP.
Continued from previous post... Blur's "There's No Other Way" was taken from April 1991 - hence the miming rule being in force then. Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was broadcast November 1991, during the live vocal rule. Bit anoracky, I know, but as a very big TOTP fan of the 90's (and someone who still has most of the shows on VHS), I think you'll find the above to be pretty accurate.
Still turn any uni into a mosh pit ..😉 God more of this in 2018 .. U.K. forgot or what.. i aint forgot.. My speaker's happy to blast a bit of Blur.. Anytime, Anyplace; Everywhere 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍👍🇬🇧😎😋
This song was a major mutation from anything that had gone before. Very few guitarists would have dared put those chords together: it must have sounded quite alien when he first played them to the rest of the band.
What on earth is the point on getting a great band like Blur on your show only to make them lip sync? Totally lame. No wonder Damon got blasted before he went on stage.
As I understand it TOTP's rules allowed a band to either a) play live and mime, or b) mime the instruments and sing. Something like that. It is the very reason that Nirvana took the piss so epically. If you've never seen the performance search for it; fucking comedy gold.
@@hardcoreheaven4 I doubt a) was an option. The whole point of the miming I believe was to make it less hassle to make the program i.e. Not have to mic the drums, guitars, bass (and whatever else) do a sound check, get someone to mix it etc. The options were more likely a) mime or b) mime instruments and lead vocalist sing live.
@geekpie100 It means you record your solo then play the tape (or digital equivalent) backwards by flipping it over, recording the result into the overall mix. It's what you hear on 'I'm Only Sleeping' by the Beatles as well.
I think Nirvana's performance is much more of an FU because they actually convinced TOTP to let them sing live and it is the funniest thing in the entire universe. Kurt totally screws with the singing as they very clearly fake playing their instruments. Nirvana was such a force at the time that TOTP caved because Kurt refused to go on unless they could at least sing live. But this is funny too.
@skytoweruk Nope. 1991 was the year they went back to live singing for after many years of lip syncing but clearly the 1991 Nirvana performance was not during an era when TOTP acts sang live as demonstrated by this Blur performance which was also in 1991.
it doesn't to me. For a start it's got 90s breakbeat drums. The only bit that does is the guitar solo towards the end when he slides down the fretboard at the start and then uses some effects pedal (maybe wawa not sure).
I didn't think I would see a worse lip sync than Liam's Lyla when they did TOTP, but leave it to their arch rival Blur to top it. Great song. Horrible lip sync.
Wow, Graham playing only with one arm 2:01! ;) Proof he is indeed God :) I really don't get how a so-called "musical show" makes groups "playing" in play-back!!! ....
he's so high
Especially @2:30 😂

Damon and alex were on ecstacy, this was just insane.
look at the superior drumming skills of the white t shirted guy . amazing! blur were legends.

The drumming on this song is excellent
a classic track by blur, wish i could go back to these days.
what a beautiful playback hahaha
The drums on this song is amazing, I learnt it myself and it’s such a fun beat to play along with the music
1:55 wow Damon somehow I can hear you without a microphone in front of you...
its so funny how they keep doing things to make it obvious they're not actually playing the song
This song is addictive. I love the guitar playing in it.

Ecstasy + miming = PERFORMANCE!
Never realized until now how heavily influenced this is by the Stone Roses

the biggest?! roll with it, whats so amazing about this mime, there not exacrtly turning up with no guitar no mic, and letting th emusiq plau

hes acting like he did in the 1989 performances hahha cute
their all e'd up
Damon took acids before going on stage. And it's definitely obvious.
lol there taking the mick
