- In today's adventure, we're exploring the Lycoming Mall just outside of Williamsport, Pennsylvania. When I filmed the video, I didn't feel like it was in that bad of shape. However, in putting together this video, I now realize it was far worse off than I initially realized. Join me and let's see what we can find!

I am a resident of Lycoming County and as of yesterday, all interior stores are closed. Many more stores have closed in the time since recording this video. This mall was nearly full until about 10 years ago when it took a nosedive. It is sad to see this happen, as this was the only real shopping plaza that we had, and many store's closest location are as far as Philly or Scranton. RIP Lycoming Mall.
theres Selinsgrove mall
I grew up with this mall. I have so many fond memories here.
I wish it didn’t have to end like this.
Extremely sad it closed..this was such a beautiful place back in the day and holds so many memories for others; including myself growing up. It had a lovely coin fountain, christmas was so whimsical with a Santa wonderland and decor, plants that breathed life. Its night and day anymore. Wish you and others could have experience what I and others had.
my mall..... a shame! This was was a bustling mall when it opened! I was there in 2021, and only 3 places open. There are a plethora of shopping centers around it. It was prime farming when it was baught for this mall. The Toys R US became an Ollie's, and that's the most bustling part of the original mall. It's incredibly sad!
Hey Ian, just wanted to say thanks for the video. I really appreciate creators like you recording these videos to bring back memories and preserve these spaces in a way. I haven't been to that mall in YEARS but spent a lot of time there as a kid and I'm sad to know I can never go back relive those memories.
Owners might be eyeing up a mini casino license, which is the alleged salvation of the not-dead-but-nearly-so Nittany Mall in State College.
RIP my childhood
i use to loveeeeeeeeee this place. the auntie anne’s closing makes me want to die
So sad. I grew up there in the 90s and remember going there a lot
UPDATE: As of Friday, February 24, 2023, the Lycoming Mall closed its doors for good after nearly 45 years of service to the Williamsport community, with the developers FAMVEST, LLC preparing to sell the mall with the intention of repurposing it as a mixed use residential and commercial center. I went to Pennsylvania College of Technology (a 5-10 minute drive away in Downtown Williamsport) for college from 2016-2020. I actually visited the mall a few times and every year it seemed to simply get worse. I haven't been up there since late 2021 but I must say I am not surprised by the mall's closure at all.
I remember when this place first opened. It was an exciting place to be.
I was a kid when it opened…everyone used to say “we’re going to Hesses’”. (which was the first anchor store….remember all the fountains?!)
Wow, i went to this mall in 1998, and the mall was filled with people. There was also this large arcade here! Im from norway, and my uncle lives in montoursville, so this mall was so big compared to norwegian malls!
Seeing the mall that I basically grew up living in and always asking my parents to take me to finally gone hit me hard. I shed tears on the official day of closing.
Agreed.
Same
The wings have a Chambersburg Mall vibe.
Yes they do, I wonder if it is a crown American property.
It seems such a ridiculous waste of space that the mall has closed while big box stores have sprung up all around it!
It's a rent/lease thing. I had a friend who owed a store base at the Susquehanna Valley Mall. Rent forced him out if business...there was no negotiating with the mall owners/operators.
This was my hometown mall growing up. Sad to see it like this. It was so busy in the 90s and early 2000s.
Thanks for the memories.
The stores that made the malls back in the 80's to the early 2000's began to go out of business b/c our economy has slid down hill to the point of no return. The yo-yo effect has taken a toll on the American consumer and retailer. It is a sad thing what we have become.
Very well said.
I don’t think it is as simple as you think…today’s economy is WAY better than the local economy was when this mall opened…remember what the late ‘70’s economy was like in the greater Williamsport area?! It was BLEAK!! Yet the mall opened and people went there. There are lots of factors influencing the closure of malls around the country, but it isn’t because people have stopped buying stuff…if anything, people are buying more junk than ever!
I remember this mall was busy in the late 2000’s , crazy how quick it went . Immix wireless , cvs, yankee candle , wnep had a studio in there… sad
This mall looks sadly on edge of closing. With the loss of dicks sporting goods, the only businesses keeping this mall alive is Burlington and Bam Books. The remaining tenants are just a small mixture of local businesses and service centers and also some major chains. The mall will probably not last much longer. Great Video Ian!
This mall closes for good March 1st. It's being bought in March and torn down by a developer. All stores have to leave by March 1st.
Any update? It’s now mid April 2023
I heard it just got sold again. It's almost spooky bc it's still open despite being dead.
At this point, the mall has imploded to the point where there's literally not even one of the ubiquitous Auntie Anne's - it closed down less than a month after this video was posted. As of late June, there were less than a dozen tenants, and the mall's website isn't even bothering to update stores that have left.
How appropriate that the song playing was "Here's Where the Story Ends" by the Sundays when you were filming the cars in the middle. This was the "good mall" we would drive 35 miles to get to when I was growing up.
This mall used to be so full all the time it’s sad but they are rebuilding it
In my opinion, this mall should be demolished for at least an indoor skatepark, at least a few retail stores, at least a few restaurants, and a Car Wash with a site layout very similar to the Brightworks Car Wash in Fort Worth, Texas but a lot bigger with an on-site auto repair center, an on-site gas station, convenience store, and at least ten more indoor hand wash bays for many different types of cars, trucks, buses, boats, and RVs.
Though malls are dying throughout the country it seems that the majority of these dying malls are in the rust belt. In summer Pennsylvania is beautiful, but is dismal, dreary, and depressing in the colder months. Most of the people who still live in the rust belt live only there because of family. Only a rebuilding of our manufacturing base will revive the rust belt.
Those jokes George Carlin made about Americans and malls feel dated now.
It's not WORTH going to the mall anymore. I haven't been to my local mall in over a decade. They just slowly stopped having what I needed over the years.
as a kid me and my mom would shop there every weekend. So sad to see it closing. rip mall :(
Well look everybody another mall bit farewell and what's going to happen to it now wait it will be destroyed in time trust me 😅😊
I remember when the Boardwalk Blvd was in there. It was a big arcade back then
Ian
when did you shoot the video? In your video the floors of the mall look waxed and look good. I think the only business that is doing well is the one that cleans the mall. In your wall thru of the dead malls. How many mall walkers do you see? Here in TX a lot of older people go to the dying malls for the AC in the summer. I think the reason why the cars in the mall. It maybe to keep cars out of the weather. The car dealership that owns the cars in the mall may not have room on their lot.
Thanks for checking out the video. It was shot winter of ‘21/‘22, so just like 6ish months ago. Surprisingly I don’t typically see mall walkers as often as I expect. Typically the summers I think a lot of malls around here get more walkers to get out of the heat kinda like you’re saying in Texas. Not a lot over winter though.
The car the carpeted area in middle of Mall used to be in set down stairs and ramps.
The ceiling and floor work is so distracting
on its way to becoming a liminal space
One of our local news stations used 5o be there.
I swear to God. it is not closed
I miss this place :(
Another great post Ian!! I binged watched your videos last week on plane to Vegas 😆
Glad I can keep you company on your trip! Haha
I love it when you can find the name of the empty store! Talk about a trip down memory lane, Certain stores like AUNTIE ANNES have/had such distinctive store fronts that you can tell which one they were. This mall never seemed to have a central food court? Back when I was a kid...every major department store had their own food or restaurant space. Some of them even had cafeterias they were so busy (and employees to feed). Most Sears stores had restaurants at the parking lot entrances too. Think of how many people these malls must have employed and ate at them every day before fast food chains took them over! And in the 70's and 80's, many malls had a WALGREENS with a Wags restaurant! Thanx for posting
10:10 that would have spooked the shit out of me, lol
Amazon killed the malls.... I shop Amazon....Get just want I want....EVERYTIME
I'm a 1:47 in and I bet you will probably get asked to leave
