    I’ve loved stoping at South of the Border ever since I was a kid. It’s a must stop anytime I’m driving to Florida. Definitely not as neat as it was in the 80’s. But it still has that nostalgia for me.

    Thank you for this video it's exactly what I was looking for. I was just looking on the map and I was thinking you know when he was up there he was checking out Saint Alphonsus cemetery. As soon as I saw the outbuilding and the tree line I thought oh this is exactly what he would be looking for. Especially in his younger days. Also I wanted to ask you if you have any theories as to if he crossed into Canada legally. I mean it was back in the 90s when he said he went and the early 2000s to Montreal. If I'm not mistaken. And that would have been easy because even I've crossed into the US from canada, without a passport back then. And seeing that Poplar Street was so close to the Canadian border I'm wondering if he just crossed over because he did say he brought a gun. I can't see him just being able to walk across CBSA letting him pack that. Or he could have thrown them across and then crossed legally and then went down to the tree line I don't know.

    "Why do you need that many churches?" Well, before the atomization of culture begun by radio and slammed down by the Internet, people organized their sense of the transcendental physically. Or, back when communities coalesced around physical presence, it made sense to be with people you wanted to be present with. Or, if you're going to be faithful to how you understand the presence and guidance of God, in the company of other people, church! Those sorts of things, I'd say. I'm one of the practicing Episcopalians in a similar (not so abused and blighted) town.

    In the 1990s, our sons were very excited about South of the Border billboards. We stayed there once -- my wife and sons another time. Even then, it felt a bit past its prime. But, for us, and I expect, for most on I-95, what an icon! We're glad we checked it out.

    Pedro's! It does seem strange, but if you grew up with it, so nostalgic and I'm so glad it's still kicking, and seems to be doing a little better than the last time I was there. I last stopped on a trip from NC to Charleston, SC in the late 00's, the tower was stuck then too, but with people on it 😮 and I think they had to use the stairs. The mechanic said it was too windy. The theme park was "open" then, but only had a couple teenagers working and several rides out of order. Blenheim's is a regional favorite, not just sold at SOB. Fun fact - Ben Bernanke (former federal reserve chairman) worked there for a summer.

  • @jonathanwoods9843
    @jonathanwoods9843 2 дня назад

    As soon as you said, "insanely spicy ginger ale," I knew you were talking about Blenheim. My favorite! I've only seen it for sale in the South. Didn't realize they bottled it at South of the Border. Good reason to stop in!

    Me and some friends explored those buildings in the middle of the night couple years ago, went on a 30 min walk underground through the tunnels from building to building, the temperature drops down there, ended up accessing building 93 from underground getting up through an elevator shaft. I experienced no paranormal activity, just dead silence. You get used to it and its honestly really peaceful. I know bad things happened there but I didn't feel anything. Only thing you might hear is a big slam from one of the metal doors because of wind going through the buildings. It'll be dead silent and then out of nowhere you hear BAM.

    Dude I hope you will take this to heart when I tell you that you need to leave the condescending attitude behind when you go to a place like this. Yes it's a tack overpriced roadside attraction and it's seen better days but I've been in plenty of places that were a lot worse than that and didn't act like a touch me not. It makes you look bad and it makes others that share some of your opinions on other things look bad too. I get not being a fan of zoos in the abstract but in a lot of cases these were animals that were rescued from an illegal pet situation and those that weren't aren't exactly rare in the South. SOB had it's heydey in the early 70s shortly after Disney World opened as it was just about halfway between Pennsylvania/New York and Central Florida. Back then airfare was WAY too expensive to fly the whole family in so people would load the kids in the station wagon and make the trip in two days with an overnight stop somewhere along the way. They used to even sell Disney World and Sea World tickets at SOB and offer travel information about central Florida. Cheap airfare and the internet changed all of that. For a long time fireworks were completely illegal in North Carolina so a LOT of people from NC would drive down to South Carolina where they were legal and buy tons of the things. My uncle would spend hundreds of dollars on the things and one of the places he went to get them was the fireworks shop at SOB. Now NC allows some fireworks and so does Virginia so it's not that big of a deal anymore. Although there are still some types you can only buy in SC that you can't get in NC.

    There is a place like this going towards Myrtle Beach called Sparkys. On the way, there are probably 25 to 30 billboards for it and essentially it is a giant gift shop with a grill and a bunch of gas pumps and we have been going there for probably 30+ years. Now in Florence South Carolina there is a Buckys, which has kind of killed Sparky sadly. South of the border was really cool back in the day being from South Carolina condo near the beach, everyone knows about these places.

    This place used to be over run with unsupervised preteens and teens all day and into the night! It was unruly and dangerous. Packs of teenagers creating havoc and crime. If you were lucky enough to not get robbed on your way out, youre vehicle would inevitably be broken into. They would break the windows even if it was unlocked. If there was nothing to steal the kids would slice ip your seats ! We learned quickly to stay away from that nightmare !

    Perfectly good rooms. Most 2 beds each. Just sitting there. Literally doing nothing. No good. 2 whole motels. Can EASILY house people there. Shit. House some Homeless. Clean the whole stop up. And redo it. Make it a bit more modern. But still retro. They can help with all that. Regardless. Id love to see this place start popping again. I moved to SC in 04. Drove here from NY. Multiple trips. And as a kid. It was so fun on a road trip reading the signs. Getting closer and closer. The miles away getting less. This was before phones/ tablets or anyhring beside the radio to keep you busy on a road trip. It was dope af. Couldn't much find parking certain places there. Being a kid from NY (fireworks illegal) to seeing that place?! Man. I would 1000% honestly invest in a right plan. And help work and all. Bring SOB back dammit

    Stopped for an overnight break during a family road trip vacation from Michigan to Texas via Disney World in the mid '80s. I was 7 or 8, and it was quite bustling as far as my recollection goes. It definitely had a vibe and whimsy that even a child could appreciate. I was so enamored by the place that I begged my parents to stay longer, skipping Disney World all together. We ended up staying 3 nights. I was fortunate to have experienced most of the country on family trips, but all my life, hands down this has been my favorite, and I still remember it vividly to this day. . Last time I was there was in the 90s, and it looked like a ghost town. All the souvenirs looked like they had been on the shelves and racks since the 70s. I took my niece to a train ride. We had to walk around until one guy finally showed up. So we were the only ones on the train. I bought a gigantic Mexican hat that recently gave to a friend who likes to sing Mexican songs on karaoke. I also still have the bumper sticker, which I never use 😅.
