I always leaned heavily towards over the top racing games personally. Games like this while they're nice they lose my interest so damn fast. A title such as Burnout Paradise, Split/Second, Mario Kart 8 etc. all have some kind of intricate system in place to make them unique from just racing in circles x amount of times.
The goal of Project Cars is to improve your lap times and try and win races. You use real racing techniques or you will fail. In that sense, if you keep practicing you will be get better and better at more realistic racing.
This game and Forza 6 are probably my choices for nominees for best driving game of the year so far. I haven't really seen a lot of worthwhile racing games come out this year, or at least ones that aren't currently in early access, but hopefully when the new NFS comes out, it doesn't disappoint.
It's a racing game with none of the fluff.. just get in and compete. The graphics are phenomenal (on PC ultra settings), the racing is intense, and the physic is punishing. Racing is hard and this game makes you work. Overall, a great title with some annoying bugs here and there. Looking forward to the sequel.
We need more games with titles like Banjo-Kazooie again. Titles with stopping power. Titles that stop your leisurely walk down the video game aisle and demand that you pick them up and look over the packaging. Stuff like The Order, The Syndicate, and all these generic shooters and racers need titling revamps. And even though Bloodborne was pretty incredible, featuring architecture and world design that not even Zelda could top, that title is sort of... eh.
The identity issue spans from the fact PC is lacking many many licences, in a way it's a good thing but In many ways having the licences is intrinsic of racing up the ladder of the worlds most well known championships.
***** Most official championships have either their own games or are on gt and Forza. The made-up championships are far from complete, the roster of real tracks is very short. PC is realistic but it's like the Pro evo soccer of console racing games.
+Lotus cola I would say the best way to understand the "lack of identity" is best seen when comparing Project CARS to a game like Forza Horizon 2. That game bleeds personality. Every minute of that game is designed to remind you what you're playing. The music, the hyper-realistic (not realistic, hyper, as in it looks too good, clearly fake, but just amazing, like what your mind imagines cars and racing to look like) graphic style, the control, the UI. It's all clearly Forza Horizon 2. That said, I'm sure the racing mechanics don't stack up compared to Project CARS. That's what they shot for, as realistic of a racing sim as possible. Notice I said sim instead of game. It's more concerned with the pure sport of racing than it is crafting a story, pumping you up with curated songs, and giving you an adrenaline rush. And that's just fine, but it has so little of anything but the core racing experience that it doesn't have a personality much to itself.
Markolore I don't agree. When someone criticizes someone or something for lacking in identity, in this case something hasn't got enough qualities to distinguish it self from others. CARS does not stand out. I agree when you say Horizon does stand out, but you certainly don't expect CARS to stand out in the same way. PC as you called it a sim game. Racing cars are stripped off stereos to save weight, the noise is racing. Tyre squeal, engine noise, smoke, danger, speed, competition, accurate championships, this is what can be projected on a console game, CARS failed to deliver. Honestly if I'm living a racing career how do I expect to be racing on championships that don't exist, with cars that don't exist either and race tracks that also don't exist. The game drives ok. Most of it's flaws will go unnoticed to those that don't live and breathe motor-racing. I don't want to race a pack of F1 cars that are all actually Sauber 2011 cars with the wrong livery. I don't want to race LeMans with old and not all of the top prototypes. I'll go drive a bunch of Lotus F1 cars from last year on Forza instead, at least they've got the right livery.
What's next...a Video channel host stuck on October 21st 1982 and should be playing Mario Cart and not reviewing a racing Simulator? Oh, that's this video. Tell him to stick to reviewing Earth Defense and Soul Caliber.
That's the whole point of Project CARS. The simulated style of driving is more realistic with the way the cars respond to the tracks/weather/tuning. I also think the car sounds are some of the best in any car game.
Project Cars was never originally going to be the name. It was just a place holder till they came up with one but eventually the name Project Cars started building traction so they stuck with it
The problem with a lot of the new drivings games is that you aren't invested in a single car doing lots of incremental upgrades like in Gran Turismo. DC is a great game, but you don't have any personal connection to the cars.
I actually wouldn't. mind seeing a driving game like this, but with weird Mario Kart style tracks. Like, a serious driving game, but in a non-serious setting, with some speed boosts and ramps.
This game was pretty good, but the glitchiness was too high and honestly it just wasn't that much fun. Slightly Mad I thought knocked it out of the park with the Need For Speed Shift series. They should have stuck with that formula but increase the realism and attention to detail to be higher than Gran Turismo or Forza, that would have been a surefire winner. This game is only going to appeal to sim enthusiasts, and they're going to play iRacing, so I have no idea who this is intended for. Namco apparently didn't either, since the price has nosedived fast for this and there are a lot of used copies at Gamestop. Also it is clear that the console versions are an afterthought since they have framerate issues and such, if you are going to play this, only do so on the PC.
Best Wii U game ever... Oh WAIT...! That's right. Slightly Mad Studios screwed over the Nintendo fans, who Kickstarted this game. I'll never buy a game from Slightly Mad Studios ever unless my life depended on it.
+Kurt Angerdinger First, it wasn't on Kickstarter, they had their own system called WMD Portal. Sevond, every backers got their money back + some profits. Finally, there was barely backers for the Wii U anyway, no matter what Nitendo fans want to make you believe. Get over it.
+C172fccc agreed. indeed it was never on kickstarter, it was also only going to be for PC, and was either mostly funded or entirely funded just for that platform. I think I also remember it was going to be a free to play game at one point, I can't quite remember. the consoles was tacked on later, the last gen consoles was dropped because they lacked the power and memory, the WiiU almost had enough memory but lacked the power to run it at a stable framerate. the tire model in the game is what made it to where it required decent power, they didnt want to use the old tire model they used in NFS shift games, they also didnt want to release a sub par version of the game vs the other versions. they also refunded the money to the few that backed it for the WiiU version.
Dude, I'm 2:36 in. The point of the game is to be serious. You want flamethrowers (literally or figuratively) and stuff like that, but the whole point of this game is for racing sim fans that want a pure driving experience. We don't want a "game" so much as a simulator. I think it's fair to say that this isn't the game for you, but that really shouldn't be a knock against it. EDIT: I would like to amend my comment after watching the full video. I actually think you were able to give a fair review and description of the game by fake-playing up your desire for lasers. Well done. I admit, I was fooled at first.
I think i know a few ideas that can bring more of an identity to this game. So the game is named Project Cars, right? Well, a project is something you work on, and a car is just the same, so why not include all these crazy over the top vehicle customization options? Like, why not give the option to *Stretch* a car into a limo? Or add monster truck tires to a car? And, while were at it, why not some more *everyday* cars, or joke cars, or classics? Hypercars are only so fun for so long...
The driving is probably nailed in the game but it doesn't come through the video. The graphics however look like it's stuck half way between PS2 and PS3.
I've never been a big fan of racing simulators simply because they're just too...realistic which makes them boring. If I want realistic I can just go outside and drive my 98 VW Passat. And Mark is right, attaching machine guns and canons to those cars would be a really nice Twist :)
Yes but some people love driving. And not everyone gets to drive a race car (more like multiple race cars) in their life. Also, you cannot race with your car in real life. It's like saying, why would I play a fighting game? If I wanted to fight, I would just go outside and pick a fight :|
ImakeUfamous VW is a very solid German car brand but I'm sure you're driving a Ferrari right? Oh..wait..Nah, you probably still live with your mom and ain't driving shit but riding a bike hah
It's meant as a simulator apparently. Lack of personality is obligatory for simulators :P But I think it's interesting that of all things, we still didn't have a car simulator. Now that gap is filled.

+C172fccc The bugs, the bland car selection, the broken multiplayer, impossible to play with a controller. It's no fun at all, Forza 6 is far superior.

Love that classic CGR opening.
+1shoryuken I wish Mark could love my opening.
+Broyale26 Okay that is creepy af
+1shoryuken The car with the hood coming off had me crackin up.
Thumbs up if you can't watch CGR reviews without hand lotion and a towel on standby.
I always leaned heavily towards over the top racing games personally. Games like this while they're nice they lose my interest so damn fast. Try out the Dirt series, you may find Rally racing fun, the challenge being you vs the track
i havent laughed out loud at one of your videos in a while but "look what i did, i made a hatchback" made me do just that
This game and Forza 6 are probably my choices for nominees for best driving game of the year so far. I haven't really seen a lot of worthwhile racing games come out this year, or at least ones that aren't currently in early access, but hopefully when the new NFS comes out, it doesn't disappoint.
THE OLD INTRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Imagine if a developer actually ever listened to Mark's request for a release on some 20-30 year old console, that would be hilarious!
New classic game room video + a cup of coffee = a very good morning
It's a racing game with none of the fluff.. just get in and compete. The graphics are phenomenal (on PC ultra settings), the racing is intense, and the physic is punishing. Racing is hard and this game makes you work. Overall, a great title with some annoying bugs here and there. Looking forward to the sequel.
Worth white listing the channel on my ad-blocker!
I can't wait to play this on Wii U! Mario Kart's great, but a simulation racer would be awesome on it.
Oh wait....
I imagine the next badly named car game: Drivesociety or Mission Cars.
Racing Cars the game.
Or Car Racing. Or maybe just Cars.
i like drivesociety
if only more games could be like pole position
2cars2loud2fast!! Or in short, 222!!
Racing Cool Fast Loud Cars!
you brought back the old intro yes!
This is the best review of Project Cars on the internet.
I'm digging the classic intro. CGR IN HD!
And even though Bloodborne was pretty incredible, featuring architecture and world design that not even Zelda could top, that title is sort of... eh.
+OtterloopB Sadly, if another Banjo game came out today, it would have to be named Banjo-Kazooie: Retribution or something silly like that.
Keep ur fingers crossed Mark. SMS is already working on Pcars2.

Oh wow, you brought back the old intro!
Project Community Assisted Racing Simulator... is it that hard to figure out why it's called that way?
many people drag on about the name of the title (which doesn't bother me in the slightest) because they don't know what it stands for.
What's next...a Video channel host stuck on October 21st 1982 and should be playing Mario Cart and not reviewing a racing Simulator? Oh, that's this video. Tell him to stick to reviewing Earth Defense and Soul Caliber.
+MK3424 Because people who buy this game in the shop would know that...
+zaczes999 Yeah, he should stick to classic games and leave the new ones to CGRUndertow.
I actually went through a phase of referring to this as 'Project Mayhem' a while back
HERE IN MY CAR. I FEEL SAFEST OF ALL. I CAN DO ANYTHING. IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO LIVE.
...wait, that's not what this is about?
YEAH THE INTRO IS BACK!!!!
I totally agree with the recommendations for the sequel. Especially Jean Claude Van Dam
I'm too discouraged to do pizza delivery, but it makes me want some...
These thumbnails really get me man...
This is a good review - and a great example.
Of Lord Karnage's sense of humor. A+ fun times.
I saw what you did there Mark i nthe list, Sense 8 reference. Nice!
That's the whole point of Project CARS. The simulated style of driving is more realistic with the way the cars respond to the tracks/weather/tuning. I also think the car sounds are some of the best in any car game.
I'm shocked that you didn't drive the Sega Genesis homage car, Mark! It's the #11 Caper Monterey stock car.
Yayyy the old intro is back :D
Mark- I love your list of preferred Add Ons, roflmao!
At least all the cars are there instead of 75% of them available as DLC. So big bonus points for that.
2:40 Man, I want to drive to drive a tuned up go-kart with a big-ass A/C on it :D
"Look what I did. I made a hatchback!" Hahahahahahahahahaha!!!! ROFLMAO!
This intro music to classic game room always reminds me of GTA VIce city for some reason
Mark, did you go to Van Halen's new tour? THEY STILL ROCK!
The list of sequel improvements could just be shortened to "Mark Bussler things" on the back of the box
never could get used to the gameplay with a controller
Actually the music sounded more to me like the soundtrack from one of the Transformers movies.
I was going to preorder part 2, but project cars 3 has just been announced. ; )
Project Cars was never originally going to be the name. It was just a place holder till they came up with one but eventually the name Project Cars started building traction so they stuck with it
The karts in this game are one of a kind, though.
The problem with a lot of the new drivings games is that you aren't invested in a single car doing lots of incremental upgrades like in Gran Turismo. DC is a great game, but you don't have any personal connection to the cars.
+Tool0GT92 lol what is it your gf or wife? xD leik git reel bruh
+فيصل الثاني عشر (fsfsxii) just block him tool. obvious troll
Finally a new-gen racing game I can enjoy "offline" & there's a criminal lack of American cars in it, no sale sadly.
mark has a point....why don't we ever get el caminos in racing games?
You should also review "Project Curs." It's a dog racing simulator with epic Lord of the Rings music and disco music!
I think Van Halen is a great idea. Good music is what most driving game are lacking recently.
I would love a game with forza/gran turismo styled physics and cars, and then have all the tracks be like mario kart levels.
The sequel shall be called "Shift and Steer"
Was this review done with a driving wheel?
Still waiting on that wood grain ps4
I actually wouldn't. mind seeing a driving game like this, but with weird Mario Kart style tracks. Like, a serious driving game, but in a non-serious setting, with some speed boosts and ramps.
TrackMania
Hm, try finding yourself a copy of the game Blur, then.
Did anyone else get the pole position reference

Uploading a review of this game after Gran Turismo 3.
Best Wii U game ever...
Oh WAIT...! That's right. Slightly Mad Studios screwed over the Nintendo fans, who Kickstarted this game.
I'll never buy a game from Slightly Mad Studios ever unless my life depended on it.
+thebuccaneersden BULL FUCKING SHIT this cant run on wii u its a racing game and its not even that impressive looking
+Kurt Angerdinger First, it wasn't on Kickstarter, they had their own system called WMD Portal. Sevond, every backers got their money back + some profits. Finally, there was barely backers for the Wii U anyway, no matter what Nitendo fans want to make you believe. Get over it.
+thebuccaneersden I'm sure that you and the other 5 Wii u owners who planned on getting this are outraged
+Rob Cuthbertson That made me lol.
+C172fccc agreed. indeed it was never on kickstarter, it was also only going to be for PC, and was either mostly funded or entirely funded just for that platform. This is a really underrated game, one of my favorite PS4 games. Not trying to bash CGR but he's pretty immature during this review.
good old times of CGR
Ok, so it doesn't have el camino. But more importantly, does it have volvo v70?
suprised he dint ask for flametrowers
You want a game, but this is a simulation. No bling bling, unlocks or endbosses ;)
game devs, listen to this man
I wish I could get a Gran Turismo as I only have a PS4 I think I cant.
I think i know a few ideas that can bring more of an identity to this game.

cars is actually an acronym
Every game needs some Van Halen. My GT custom music likst is nothing but Van Halen and AC/DC.
Now Mark needs to review Forza 6 :D
I bought this, did not get out of the cart stage and gave up. Now it is collecting dust.
So many car themed videos :O this is not classic car garage!
So glad I picked this up over forza driftsport 6
"What's next" for bad driving game names? How about "Next Car Game"?
I'm sure most of you know that yes, this is actually a real thing.
It actually got changed to Wreckfest upon release
The driving is probably nailed in the game but it doesn't come through the video. The graphics however look like it's stuck half way between PS2 and PS3.

I love racing games like the NFS series, Twisted Metal but Blur was pretty good too.
+Jimmy Darmody only pussies drive passats
ImakeUfamous
VW is a very solid German car brand but I'm sure you're driving a Ferrari right? Oh..wait..Nah, you probably still live with your mom and ain't driving shit but riding a bike hah
It's meant as a simulator apparently. Lack of personality is obligatory for simulators :P But I think it's interesting that of all things, we still didn't have a car simulator. Now that gap is filled.
I keep getting tempted to buy this game but know I wouldn't like it. PS4 needs something like Burnout or Wipeout.
It's meant as a simulator apparently. Lack of personality is obligatory for simulators :P But I think it's interesting that of all things, we still didn't have a car simulator. Now that gal is filled.
Image a wood grain Vextrex

Collecting cars? Come onnnnn, that's boring. Give me missile launchers and a stage with an evil gundam shooting at every competitor.
I guess the reason you don't like the driving is because you're probably playing with a controller instead of a wheel.
Still on the fence about this one.
+Frankie Ortiz Thats what she said.
It's a terrible game, avoid like the plague.
+bfcricky Why do you think that? I'm curious. Is it because of the bugs?
+C172fccc The bugs, the bland car selection, the broken multiplayer, impossible to play with a controller. It's no fun at all, Forza 6 is far superior.
if you think this game has an overly dramatic soundtrack you must not have played NFS shift 2. there isn't a single more dramatic racing game than that
Why not even race your friends why not?
Still a better driver than BlackPanthaa and Tomcat.
I thought about buying this game buy Slightly Mad didn't want my money because I own a Wii U.
I don't even think it looks beautiful!
Yeah, it does have some cool light-reflections but anything else?
It's muddy, textures are also "meh" and has nothing about it what makes me want to really play it!
Maybe it just isn't my genre, although I've got lost of fun with the old Need For Speed games! ^^'
Well, however: I'll stick to Mario Kart! :D
On Thursday, Project Cars will be free with gold on Xbox one.
I like how your problem with the game is that its not enough like Mario Kart and Twisted Metal. ha ha.
I was playing project cars while this video was being uploaded.. I think most of us bought p.c. in the absence of gt7. for the love of God. bring us gt7 already! lol not saying pc isn't good because it is but..
Project: C.A.R.S.
Community.
Assisted.
Racing.
Simulator.
I really wanted to like this game... but I didn't.
Lol this guy's is Sooooo funny
This doesn't look smooth at all, more like 30fps and that's a NoGo for any type of racing game.
You forgot "The Crew"
That is truly the worst driving title
Oh come on Mark this does have brand identity, what other racnging game has music taken from The Last Of The Mohicans and The Lord Of The Rings.
I miss CGR
mark is my bae
This is one of the most boring games I’ve ever played
Jeez the graphics are horrendous! GT6 looked better and that was on the PS3!
+RedCalx Z Play Project Cars on PC, where it should be played and let the graphics melt your eyes. Or something something.
+Lord LOC pc version actually has no graphics improvements except for the draw distance.
Don't be ridiculous. The PS4 version runs on "medium" settings. The PC version running on Ultra blows it away.
Sega GT is better ! lol
u get all cars at the start?? wow, no progression at all... seems like a totally shitty game haha
