I did a similar hack a couple of years ago but wired it up to an old organ pedal board so I could play bass lines with my feet, while playing guitar.

USB is very finicky, even touching the data lines can crash the computer, even the USB pins of the plug have the power pins that are longer so power is applied first, you just cant go and try and use a simple switch it wont work
