Funny how the documentary shows all this footage of very impressive huge German gun emplacements and big coastal fortresses, but those were mostly at the Pas de Calais. The Normandy beaches had nothing even close to that. Sure, there were some pillboxes here and there, but some beaches in Normandy were barely defended at all.
Normandy beaches still had some pretty big guns though. And some of the beaches were quite well defended, they weren't all easy (just look at the casualty numbers for the day).

The 4,400 dead and 5,600+ wounded would disagree with you. Maybe compared to Pas de Calais it wasn't as heavily defended but it was still more than "barely" defended.
Glad to see Canadian efforts given credit, mainly always thrown in as British achievements rather then our own. Same for america.. we were in vietnam. Things those men achomplished with less of everything compared to everyone else blows my mind.prpud military before even ww1 were we took vimy ridge that every major army couldnt at the time. That guy’s sleeping gunner doesn’t sound very useful. First he’s asleep as a gunner then after they move him to codriver he almost lets them get blown apart by a Tiger cause he forgets to release the clutch.
Too be fair. In war you gotta steal sleep while you can, but also i'd doubt you'd be thinking clearly in a 75mm sherman in the face of a 57 ton monster with a 88mm gun.

An interesting programme, my Father was in Normandy, 21 Army Group and had a very high opinion of the Canadians soldiers. He told me that once street battles started, most of the time about all one saw was smoke, dust and the area for maybe 50 yards around one. He said, you had to hope the soldiers you saw were on your side. As for this series of programmes, they are spoilt by frequent and monotonous repetition. As if we viewers are unable to understand first time or use rewind. It's really quite insulting to viewers.
I know it may have been a spur-of-the-moment shock, but wouldn't it have been wiser to also shoot right at/down the barrel of the Tiger (since they were so close) which I'm guessing would have been more vulnerable than the turret armor?
you know how hard it would be to hit a tank barrel even at close range also the sherman might not be able to pierce to armour. the best bet would be shooting its tracks or aimin between the turret and main body
@@riptidegaming8876 close range the Sherman could penetrate the sides and rear of a tiger. Especially later in the war when the 76.2mm gun was introduced. But from accounts and records, there was very minimal actual tank to tank battles with a tiger. There simply wasn't many of them, and they were horribly unreliable. Needless to say, just seeing one and encountering one is terrifying in its own right.
@@Asymmetrical-Saggin the Sherman was not a very suitable tank for northern Europe. It was relatively quick but not much real use until the British produced a modified version known as the Sherman Firefly. Overall the Churchill tank was more effective in Canadian and British hands.
Wouldn't do much other than blow the front of the barrel off. Not to mention they're not perfectly lined up. You won't be getting a shell all the way down the barrel and into the tank.
These close call stories are so spotty. They are face to face with a Tiger, and suddenly they just get away, and that’s it. I’ve heard so many of these detail free accounts that it gets frustrating.
I get where you're coming from but you can't forget 1.) These guys age so details get left our 2.) Just the fog of war. Things happen that can't be explained. The Tiger was significantly taller then the sherman and at such close range the ap shell basically would've gave the turret a hair cut.

I’ll *never* understand *WHY* the Allies did not make much more of an effort to have whole squadrons of Pershing heavy tanks (rather than just Fireflies) with the Shermans when the Americans left utah and Omaha to take the Cotentin and the port of Cherbourg; and the British and Canadians left Juno, Gold, and Sword beaches to advance on Caen…For years I have tried to get *someone* who is an “expert” historically on WW2 to LOGICALLY explain to me *WHY* throughout the second half of 1944 the Allies persisted in the near-suicidal “strategy” of sending British medium Churchills and Cromwells and swarms of medium-tank Shermans against Panther tanks and Tigers supporting formations of Panzer Mark IV s (to whom the Allied tanks were *theoretically* equal). I’ve been told the Allies 1) used the Sherman primarily so that logistically the Allied forces would have no trouble procuring or swapping out spare parts when they needed them; AND that 2) the cost of transporting heavy tanks across the Atlantic was prohibitive…, What is implicit in *both* those so-called “explanations” is that the Allies were not concerned really with preserving the lives of individual soldiers: they USED A STRATEGY OF **ATTRITION.** In other words, they were willing to sacrifice a few Sherman tank crews against a German Tiger or Panther tank so long as the German tank crew was overwhelmed and exhausted eventually, and could then be destroyed by yet more waves of Shermans; in the cold eyes of Allied High Command, the Allies could “afford” to lose several Shermans every time a Tiger, Panther, or Mark IV was destroyed, whereas Germany could *not* afford to lose tanks-the Germans needed every tank they had in 1944, as the curtains were closing on the Third Reich from *both* the East *and* the West, and day and night Allied carpet bombing of the German homeland drove their manufacturing industry to have to operate in more and more difficult, cramped conditions underground, with undependable slave labour only… In the *Pacific* Theatre the Sherman was indeed a formidable tank, as the Type 95 Ha-Go Japanese light tank wasn’t even a match for an American Stuart light tank; and the Type 97 Japanese Chi Ha medium tank was a “medium” tank in name only, with its underpowered gun and thin armour. There are several reasons, but you are forgetting that the M4 Medium had a better crew survival rate than almost any other tank at that time. The US began designing a replacement for the M4 as early as 1942, General Devers began advocating for a heavier tank in early 1943 and urged accelerated production of the T26 in Sept and Oct of that year. McNair opposed this as at the time the M4 was seen as more than adequate against the German tanks it was facing (mainly Panzer III and IV). Notwithstanding that the T26E3 did not begin production until November 1944. Hindsight is a wonderful thing and today this question is often asked, but at the time it was not really until after D-Day (when it became apparent that the Panzer MK V was not a limited production specialist model like the Panzer MK VI, but a high volume replacement for the Panzer MK IV) that US tankers began calling for heavier armour and armament, by which time it was already too late to produce and ship large numbers to Europe.
If the tanks were that close, barrel-to-barrel, why didn't the Sherman fire a round right down the Tigers barrel? I would assume the Tiger was locked and loaded.

Okay, this is getting annoying! Every time it cuts to what would have been a commercial break, the music ramps up with the drama and then everything cuts to black, only to come back a moment later, but instead of picking back up where it left off, there's a 60 to 75 second recap of everything that happened before, (presumably as a sort-of reminder for the audience when the commercials are over,) thank GOD for RUclips's handy double-click skip forward 15 seconds feature lol but then, there's also the over-saturated punctuation of showing the same explosion or shell impact OVER and over again, as if seeing it once, maybe twice TOPS wasn't sufficient to get the point across. 🤣 I swear, they showed dude talking about waking up his tank's gunner, and blasting the enemy tank like seven or eight times, at a minimum, for whatever reason lol and that's just ONE example! It keeps happening time and time again throughout the episode! Talk about; "overkill." It's like they only had enough material for a program half as long, so they used every opportunity available to replay the same moments as many times in repeating succession as necessary to pad out the 46 minute run-time. (Hey, what are the comments even for, if not shit like that lol huh?! 😇✌)
Montgomery: the most overrated general of WWII. Operation GoodWood: Monty ordered the attack during a rainstorm so that NO AIR FORCE support was available producing 400 tanks destroyed with 1000s of casualties. Incompetent recon, blind WWI artillery barrage to warn the Nazis, and moronic tank cavalry attacks by night.
Well, its clear you have little understanding of the whole War. While Goodwood failed in its primary aim, it did force the Germans to keep its major tank forces in the area allowing the first US offensive Operation Cobra to win against weaker German opposition. Montgomery actually approved Operation Cobra and ordered the Commonwealth forces to continue pressure to prevent the Germans sending reinforcements to the West. Goodwood was proposed by Dempsey (not Montgomery) and consisted of insufficient infantry forces as Dempsey had planned due to the shortage of Commonwealth infantry (we had been fighting for two years longer than the Yanks by this time). Aware of this Montgomery issued a written directive ordering Dempsey to change the plan from a "deep break-out" to a "limited attack". Contrary to your claims the British did attack on 18th July with over 1,000 heavy bombers, the second wave of Bombers consisted of USAAF B-26 marauders, so I am curious where you get your information on no air support from.
Not necessarily. Three seconds wasn't unheard of, that being said you wouldn't need that rate of fire unless you're slinging armor piercing at really close range and it's in the 57mm. to 75mm. range with ammunition in a sweet spot. Some smaller rounds were 2-3 relatively easily.
The panzer 4 had less armor than a sherman. The powers that be did not want to bother with the 76 sherman, we don,t need it, we did well in africa with out it. dumb.
The role the Canadians played is oft times forgotten by those interested in history. We must never forget the price they paid.

Okay, this is getting annoying! Every time it cuts to what would have been a commercial break, the music ramps up with the drama and then everything cuts to black, only to come back a moment later, but instead of picking back up where it left off, there's a 60 to 75 second recap of everything that happened before, (presumably as a sort-of reminder for the audience when the commercials are over,) thank GOD for RUclips's handy double-click skip forward 15 seconds feature lol but then, there's also the over-saturated punctuation of showing the same explosion or shell impact OVER and over again, as if seeing it once, maybe twice TOPS wasn't sufficient to get the point across. 🤣
I swear, they showed dude talking about waking up his tank's gunner, and blasting the enemy tank like seven or eight times, at a minimum, for whatever reason lol and that's just ONE example! It keeps happening time and time again throughout the episode! Talk about; "overkill."
It's like they only had enough material for a program half as long, so they used every opportunity available to replay the same moments as many times in repeating succession as necessary to pad out the 46 minute run-time.

Montgomery: the most overrated general of WWII. Operation GoodWood: Monty ordered the attack during a rainstorm so that NO AIR FORCE support was available producing 400 tanks destroyed with 1000s of casualties. Incompetent recon, blind WWI artillery barrage to warn the Nazis, and moronic tank cavalry attacks by night.
Well, its clear you have little understanding of the whole War. While Goodwood failed in its primary aim, it did force the Germans to keep its major tank forces in the area allowing the first US offensive Operation Cobra to win against weaker German opposition. Montgomery actually approved Operation Cobra and ordered the Commonwealth forces to continue pressure to prevent the Germans sending reinforcements to the West. Goodwood was proposed by Dempsey (not Montgomery) and consisted of insufficient infantry forces as Dempsey had planned due to the shortage of Commonwealth infantry (we had been fighting for two years longer than the Yanks by this time). Aware of this Montgomery issued a written directive ordering Dempsey to change the plan from a "deep break-out" to a "limited attack". Contrary to your claims the British did attack on 18th July with over 1,000 heavy bombers, the second wave of Bombers consisted of USAAF B-26 marauders, so I am curious where you get your information on no air support from.

Not necessarily. Three seconds wasn't unheard of, that being said you wouldn't need that rate of fire unless you're slinging armor piercing at really close range and it's in the 57mm. to 75mm. range with ammunition in a sweet spot. Some smaller rounds were 2-3 relatively easily.

The panzer 4 had less armor than a sherman. The powers that be did not want to bother with the 76 sherman, we don,t need it, we did well in africa with out it. dumb.
Less armor? You mean less effective right? Panzer IV had 80mm flat armor, which is less effective than the angled but thinner armor on most Shermans.
