    Tohatsu has done it again. I do like the Mercury tiller controls better than the Tohatsu's . Tohatsu bulletproof reliability with the improved Mercury ergonomics.

      Thats exactly what is it! The multi function tiller is heaven sent on my Mercury 9.9.

    Bought a 20hp back in Dec 2019 for the 2020 model year. Saw all the reviews online and RUclips about all the awesome features and the reliability. Sadly after having the dealer Prep the unit, so I would get the extended warranty. Thought I was ready for the water once my boat build was finished. Took it out for the first time this season after the COVID mess. After the 1st hour and a half the unit stalled and had trouble restarting and when it would start I’d put it in gear and it would stall again. Had to be towed in. Next day brought it back to the dealer and they’ve had it for the last three weeks. No answers as to why it failed. Went and drove an hour to pick it up on the 27th of June. Tech said he couldn’t reproduce the issue multiple times trying to. Had them run it while i was there and it failed on the rack. Tech couldn’t believe it now it’s another week and they still have the motor. Waiting for Merc to contact them. Not cool! Now the boat I built to take my family out on the water with. Is sitting in my driveway. It’s not my first time breaking in an outboard so I know it wasn’t me. See what the rest of this summer brings. Hopefully ill have a reliable motor at some point. Always trusted Merc in the past. Hopefully I can again in the future.

      Ive owned 3 Mercs only one had a problem. My 20hp 89, 2004 225, and my 2015 25hp all going strong never one hiccup. However, my 2015 9.9hp hasnt stopped giving me problems. The tech never could reproduce the issue in their test tank. I just ordered the new 2020 20hp. Dont have any doubts about it. Sometimes you get a lemon

    I laugh when I hear people say tohatsu stinks and mercs are better or vice versa, when tohatsu makes all mercs smaller engines for them,as well as nissan in the past and evinrude 4 strokes and now honda. I do love the design of these new 15/20 efi mercs.

    • @jayreffner8831

      You are right expect Honda. Tohatsu makes all 4 stroke portable Mercs, Evinrude, and Nissans.

      Sweswio for those who don’t have a tohatsu dealer, they can’t get warranty work done. That’s why everyone runs the others.

    It's a sweet engine but save yourself hundreds of dollars and get a 20hp tohatsu, same engine basically, just a different tiller handle. Tohatsu makes these engines anyways up to 30hp so your paying for the merc name and a different tiller handle. They are made in japan.

    • @JS-rp7qb
      @JS-rp7qb 4 года назад

      Has Tohatsu moved their shift lever to the tiller yet on this size engine? Only thing I don’t like about my 8HP is having to two-hand the motor while maneuvering at slow speed.

    How can you tell how many hours you have done ? Is there a gauge under the cover ?

    • @smulle96
      @smulle96 8 месяцев назад

      no, if you have the motor without tiller, you typically install a hour meter on the dash by the wheel, if tiller, there are cheap revcounters with built in hour meters. however, as they suggest, either 100 hours OR if you use under 100h per year then 100hr=1yr

  • @chrisgerbino2447

    Ok,I made a mistake. I bought the tohatsu and yes I absolutely love it. Had I known the merc version was coming out so soon I would have waited a bit. The tiller on the merc is state of the art and worth the extra money over the tohatsu. The good part is I lose nothing in performance because all the merc is,is a glorified tohatsu upgrade. Same powerhead and gearcase which is great. I just want that tiller,imo comfort in a tiller handle is priceless. Anyone who owns a tiller can relate with horrible vibration and the tiller only being in one spot,with this tiller you can run the engine up and down,lefty or righty, I love the shifter on the front end of the tiller. This engine is extremely sweet like the tohatsu is. I'm just in love with this tiller and if I'm going to keep this motor as an investment or at minimum 5yrs I may as well get the most comfort for the money.

    Do the 1998 20 hp mercurys have a temperature alarm?

    • @MercuryMarine
      @MercuryMarine  9 месяцев назад

      Most engines will have either an audible temperature alarm or a warning light. We recommend that you check the operator's manual for the engine you own or contact your local Mercury Marine dealer for assistance. If you wish to speak with our product support team, contact details can be found by visiting www.mercurymarine.com/us/en/about-us/contact-us. Thank you!

    My mechanic is telling me the 15 and 20hp motors are the same motor with a "tweaked carb" and there is little performance difference. I found it strange since the EFI motor doesn't have a carb! It what I being told true? thanks

    • @melrose9252
      @melrose9252 5 лет назад

      R R There is a noticeable difference between the two engines in terms of power. They share the same “basic block” and CID displacement but the 20 will have better hole shot, midrange and top end due to tuning for 20 hp.
