  • After creating tutorials for both Substack and Ghost, it's safe to say that they are pretty similar in their product offering. But which one is best for making money from a blog? My choice? Ghost all day everyday ➡ davidutke.com/...
Substack allows you to create a free blog while Ghost.org you'll have to pay a monthly fee. But with your monthly fee to Ghost you get access to some beautiful themes that allow you to customize your website, the ability to set "from" address within your emails and no transaction fee.
Substack is free, but they do charge a 10% transaction fee once you start running paid subscriptions which can really add up if you start to have success. Also, Substack is privately owned and not open source so there is always the risk of them being sold or shut down. One huge benefit however with Substack is that they provide free podcast hosting, yes free.
All in all if I had to pick a platform I personally would go with Ghost as they allow you to have more ownership and control over your online presence and don't eat into your profits once you start making money with blogging.
Ghost vs Substack - which is the better blogging platform? Let me know in the comments below. Start your free trial of Ghost ➡ davidutke.com/...

Yes, for sure if you want to build a subscription website. I like Substack much more than medium too.

Hi there... my client has deep expertise in multiple areas ...
Should he setup separate Substack accounts for each area, or should he consolidate all of his writings in a single account? .. thx much ...

Hey, great video! I'm contemplating moving from WordPress to Ghost. Can you please help me with the following two queries:
Can I change theme at a later stage on Ghost?
Can I sell courses online on Ghost?
I'm thinking of trying the basic plan on Ghost.
    Thanks!

Great explainer and both of these are solid choices. I think it boils down to what your goals and expertise. If you are a writer and just want to write then Substack is the choice. Not having to worry about design or technical things is a plus. Also, I agree about platform lock in but Substack allows you to take your subscribers and content. I will add one more plus for Sunstack and that is they have initiated a discovery feature and a notes feature to share Twitter like notes with readers. But no doubt if you want to blog and have something that is more brandable Ghost is the way to go. For pure bloggers I think I would now recommend it over Wordpress. Why Wordpress has not built in the subscriber function like these two is baffling.

Thanks for the detailed comment. The more I use Ghost, the more impressed I'm with it for creating a membership style blog. Though since I've made this video, substack has only grown in popularity so I'll revisit it.

Great video, but neither platform sounds like the solution for me. I'm going with Medium.

Really? Why? I would go with Substack over Medium. Ghost is good if you want a WordPress blogging alternative.

@@DavidUtke I like the social aspect of it. for a beginner and someone who often comes across medium articles in regular google searches, I think it is the best one to grow with.
