Currently doing the Scioto river paddle through. I stated about 10miles northeast of Roundhead Ohio. Weve made it down to Columbus so far and will be to the Ohio River by season end. Also just did the Blanchard river to the Auglaize and now taking it north to the Maumee River and then to the lake!!
Great video and narration. I had dinner with Paul tonight. I want to go next summer. I want to do Ohio River too. I recently paddled Ohio, mongehala and Allegheny all in one day, obviously not the entirety of each River.
Awesome adventure. Those were some long paddle days. Thanks for sharing. The wife and i live along the Ohio river in Pomeroy, and plan on more yak adventures this coming summer.
I been wanting to do this for awhile now. But your right this is the first video that I came across that matched what I was looking for. Even the drop off at greenlawn. Good vid keep them coming
Michael...have you done this yet?? Are you from Ohio?? Reason I ask is I live in Columbus and am planning a Cbus to Ohio River trip very soon, like next week or two before August gets here and it gets hella hot. Was planning solo but always have more fun with more people.
I have kayaked the. Northern part of the scioto. From kenton Ohio to prospect Ohio . there is one spill way in green camp Ohio. . that you have to pull out .the river in kenton starts out at about 12 ft. Wide . I would recommend doing this trip with water level about a foot high. Or you will be doing some walking. And that's no fun
I live in Circleville Ohio and I'm planning this exact trip! I normally take a shorter trip from deercreek lake/creek to chillicothe Scioto river . Which is a blast ! And that's funny you said Westfall which is my home town school which I also work at lol I think you meant to say Williamsport the town lol
I like camping the islands too, but i have to watch it , because my local river can rise 6ft a hour if the county west of me gets 1 inch of rain. Doesn't even have to rain where iam on the river. Even on the sand banks you have to set a stick in the ground at the waters edge so you know what the river is doing over night.
Really enjoy your video. I'm originally from Ohio (milford) and it's funny, I'm a Kayak guide/instructor in the U.P. of Michigan (Woods&Water eco tours),,and at time I miss paddling the rivers of Ohio..
awesome.. my brother did a long distance scioto canoe trip several years ago.. while on the trip near powell he spotted a creature hanging on a overhanging limb as he floated by .. he said it raised its head and looked at him with big eyes and crazy colors .. he did not know what it was for several years and it freaked him out because he knew it did not belong there...he found out later that it was an escaped red panda that got loose from the columbus zoo and was just hanging out on a tree limb when he happened to float under it.. thats a crazy ass story about the scioto river .. be aware of strange animals lol
I love the video! It's very detailed and well put together. I do have a question though. What did you do about drinking water? I saw in the comments below you mentioned packing 2 filters and a large amount of water? How much water storage did you have? And did you find any of the water suitable for drinking by filtration only? A couple buddies and I attempted a similar trip this past summer starting on the Big Darby, but it was cut short by a hole in a cheap kayak the second morning. It was probably a blessing in disguise as we quickly discovered our drinking water plan was not well-enough though out. Thanks again for the great info and entertainment!
Hey there-- contemplating doing this same trip next summer. Been looking at the Scioto for couple years.. I am going with prob. 4-5 guys. I am wondering about hammock space. Did that island (Night 1) have trees avail for multiple hammocks? I am still watching your trip ... other nights? Room for several hammocks or will we need at least one tent? I am enjoying your video and photos.
Hi Hans, I can't remember exactly off hand but there were some trees available (perhaps not enough for 4-5 people though). What I do remember was the guy in our group that did use the hammock did comment that the bugs were a bit of a problem. The rest of us used tents however many of those areas were rocky so I highly recommend some sort of sleeping pad if you go the tent route. Hope you enjoy the trip!
My buddies and I are planning a trip this June 2020. Are there any stores close to the river for water, snacks etc? How many miles from Columbus to Portsmouth?
There was a brief area where we had to stand up and pull the kayaks through a shallow and stoney area. I'd say it was no more than perhaps 30 yards. I don't remember where that was exactly but I want to say it was north of Chillicothe, perhaps around the Kinnikinnick Wildlife area?? Although I could be totally off. It really wasn't a big issue. It was August and sort of dry when we went but the water level depends on so many factors. I did Youngstown to WV the following year and had to pull our kayaks on large gravel for 2 miles next to the train tracks. That was not fun.
Do you think a 10ft kayak would be able to make this trip? I was looking at purchasing a Pelican Argo 100x Exo. Any suggestions on a kayak in the $300-$550 range?
Great video. I just completed the Columbus to Circleville section and plan to go to the Ohio River in a week or so. I work with walkie crew and wanted to chat you up about some finer points of the trip. I couldn't find an email address on here. Are you available to be contacted by email or some other way? Thanks.
I am currently planning this exact same trip and it's kind of funny my starting point is going to be the exact point you started at for the exact same reason. I used to live just north of high Street on Thurman which is greenlawn south of high.
@@paddletravel6812 thank you very much for the words of encouragement. I would love to do Ole Miss one day but I am a ways away from that!! Keep trucking friend and maybe I will catch you out somewhere!
Is it possible to take a 13' v bottom with a little 5 hp briggs from south of cbus to the Ohio River? Plan on starting south of Columbus and going to new Orleans in July 2021. If its going to be a bunch of portages well just launch at the Ohio River. Figure the extra couple hundred on the scioto to Ohio River would be a nice break in for the big rivers. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

cool trip guys looks like fun. great video
Only time I have ever heard someone actually say “Westfall” lol usually it’s “just outside Circleville”

This is a pretty awesome video... I do alot of fishing right where the Ohio and Scioto rivers meet

In the area where the scioto and ohio meet there used to be a giant shawnee village until settler pushed them outta there

Those tents are badass. My friend and I looking at doing this this summer.
How did you guys manage the vehicle situation as far as leaving vehicle down in Kentucky?
Awesome man sounds like a blast. Where did you get all the extra stuff like travel pack foods and all that def easier to pack then actual food
Awesome man thanks so much for the detailed info how did you edit the video ??
That’s awesome man, such a great film. Hopefully we can have as fun and I get a decent film for you too see!!
What tent did you use? I’m looking to do something very similar, except extending to Cincinnati.

If there’s anyway I could get more information about this trip? I’d love to do this but I’m not familiar with the scioto river.
Sure thing. I can certainly try to answer any questions you might have.
Were there any spots along the way that you had to Get out because the water was too shallow and walk your boat?

@@paddletravel6812 thanks for the reply. Trying to figure out if it’s worth trying to float a drift boat boat down.
No problem. You may be okay depending on how wet it has been. It does get deeper the further south you go.
Goals!!!
If anyone has completed this, roughly home many miles per day do you have to do?
Hi Michael, we completed the journey. At 3.5 days it was about 30-35 miles per day.
