{please read to the end} This video is very very useful it is extremely detailed more detailed then any other video I have seen on RUclips regarding the trx300. Last August or September I tore apart my fourtrax to replace the center gasket because It was pouring out oil. I thought to myself this will be easy it'll be back up and running in a week I even had a service manual. Well I was most definitely wrong. No matter what I done last year no matter which way I tried to assemble the transmission I could not get it to go together. So after about 3 months of me looking and looking and reading forms and asking about the trx300 transmission I gave up because no one was seeming to have the answer I was looking for they all kept saying read the manual it'll tell you. Well either I'm not smart enough to understand the manual or it wasn't telling me right. So I gave up until it. Then it was about a month ago I was browsing RUclips and I came across your video. I finally got it to be assembled I was able to get the other case half to successfully sit on there. I've put every washer the correct size according to the thickness the od and Id into the correct spot double checked twice. But I can only get it the shift two times weather it is two times reverse or two times forwards never more never less. I've double checked the "slivers of metal" to make sure they was in the correct way that is according to the service manual of course (which I'm starting to doubt). I just can not get it to shift no matter what. No more then two times and then it's like it's hung. So maybe the bearing is getting stuck in certain spots. So I took out everything and just assembled the shift drum and the spring and other things on the back side and it did a complete 360 with clicking in between. So that wasn't the issue. I've checked all shift forks they are in the correct spot I've checked the tooth count on every gear made sure every gear is in the correct spot and facing the correct way and every washer {that is according to the manual} which seems to be the same way you assembled them in this video. I'm just at a complete loss on what it could be. Any information on what to check or possibly what I am doing wrong would be extremely helpful. Thank you so much:)
That is a tough one. I assume when you put it back together, you are rotating the shaft that the clutch basket bolts to to simulate the engine running? When it does get stuck in gear will that shaft spin then or does it just free spend like it's in neutral?
@@FourwheelerDoctor yes I have been spinning the shaft the clutch bolts to to Simulate the engine spinning. It spins up until I change gears two times and then the shaft just doesn't move or if it does it moves one way a little then the other a little almost as it was like the shift forks wasn't in place. I have also had the other case half off so I can look at the gears while I'm doing that. That is with the shift drum and the other items still attached on the back side of the shift drum. From what I have observed it's just like something isn't going into place right. I'm so wanting to tell myself that one of the gears just isn't in the right spot but I've checked over and over them again and again but I very well may have a gear in the wrong spot. I made a very dumb dumb mistake I have a recon 250 motor that I completely tore apart when I was 14 or 15 because I wanted to "fix it" it had a huge score in the piston sleeve and had many other issues anyways I put everything from that motor in a box and when I tore apart this motor with the actual intention to fix it I decided oh I'll just put them together. Definitely one of my extremely poor choices. And I may possible have one of the recon gears mixed up with the 300. But from the diagrams I have browsed over I haven't really seen any the would go on the 300 mainly because of the shaft size which is smaller if I'm correct and the teeth count is similar but I don't believe that any of them are the exact same as the 300. However I could be completely wrong. {I really do appreciate your reply thank you very much}
@@tman8209 I would about bet if the two shafts will go together then you probably got the gears correct you may want to just stick the other case half on with the gasket in it and no RTV and try it like that. I've had them shift funny when the front case was not put together just because it allows some movement that would not happen if you have the cases together. And I say put the gasket in because I've run into clearance issues by not installing gaskets on Hondas before and that little thickness of the gasket sometimes makes a difference.
@@FourwheelerDoctor well that does make sense. I've not had the entire case bolted down yet nor the gasket on it yet because I just wanted to make sure that it would operate correctly before hand. But I'll definitely try that I really hope that's the issue. Thank you again for the help:) I'll let you know how it turns out.
Just pulled my starter from your vids, weeelll, . The bottom long bolt broke, . . Dang it 😕, so I knew I then had to pull that flywheel case wasn't sure about that lol so after about 3 hour of scrolling forwards and backwards (just to make sure I wasn't missing anything from one side or another that might be spring loaded or circliped had your vid paused pulled the tcase then the flywheel case had to knock the shift shaft back thru case but I was successful got the case off and to my lunch the piece of that long bolt that was broke unscrewed by hand no drilling banging or otherwise I was soo surprised goin tomorrow to find a suitable replacement again thank you very much for the detailed vids please keep the co tent coming buddy
Thanks for watching. I'm glad I can help you out. But I'm going to go ahead and say your luck is a lot better than mine because I very seldom have them screw out. If there is an ideal situation when you break a bolt, that is it. Lol
maybe you could help me with an idea here. i got a machine in that needed stator. pulled side cover. did stator. shift shaft pulled out. i had to reinstall it about 5 times cause everytime i put cover back on it would only shift one way. not sure why. id check it before putting cover on then after it would act up. finally got it to shift both ways and feel normal. got machine together. low and behold it wont move. the shifter feels okay it sinks in and audible clicks. neutral light switches off. rev switches on. but doesnt move. did the clutch shaft maybe come unaligned? or maybe it just happens the clutch was smoked and thats a surprise? i cant imagine it shifting the drumb correctly and not moving at all if it was unaligned. it doesnt attempt to move whatsoever. no jerk no slip nothing.
I know this video is a little older by Thanks for this excellent video! I've got a question: I just bought a 96 Fourtrax 300 4x4 from estate owner bought new and kept in his basement its entire life and looks almost new and runs good was making ticking noise from top end. When I changed the oil I noticed someone had installed the oil filter in backwards and oil was pretty dark. I expected to see a lot of metal but saw very little so I adjusted valve lash and could see some scarring on the cam lobe. It fired up and sounded good ticking sound was all but gone. My question is should I replace the cam or just go ahead and redo whole top rings and all? Tia
Hey mate just followed this video step by step and have put it back together runs perfectly apart from it says its in neutral then i try engage reverse neutral light goes off but no reverse. Press down again and i have reverse. Then lift up 2 times i have neutral. Same with up shifting 1st gear is 2 times up then the rest seem lime all neutral. Then easedown on the shifter again gently to head to neutral and its clunking some gears. Gets some gears with abit of persuasion but yes 😂😂 any ideas cheers¡
Hi, i have a 91 300 2x4 that doesnt go into 2nd.. goes in first, then shift up and nothing happens, then shift up to 3 and all is fine. i tore engine apart i see nothing broken..
Hey buddy. My 96 2x4 isnt shifting at all. I got it to shift by rocking it and now the shaft is stuck down and wont budge at all! Do you think maybe i put the shift shaft in wrong?
I have a question when ever I put my rocket arm cover on I can snug one bolt down and my cam will not turn until I loosen it do you have any ideas what's wrong I sure would appreciate it if you could help me out
Is the motor at top dead center? The cam should rotate a little if it's at tdc. The rockers may be too tight initially so you may need to loosen the adjusters up first.
Thanks so much for your help and you were right plus my cam chain wasn't on there good but I got it and it's up and running good I really appreciate you
Normally it is caused by too much oil in the engine. It can also be caused by worn piston rings causing lost compression to get in the bottom end and blowing the oil in the air box through the crankcase vent tube.
I have this exact problem. It has something to do with the shift shaft not going back in the correct timing/orientation with the clutch side. I’m preparing to open the clutch side to see what’s going on. Feels as if the clutch is disengaged all the time.
Do you know if the timing chain guides for a 400 fourtrax will work on a 300 fourtrax or are the different? Hu s is rebuilding a 300. He says keep up the good videos!
Working on getting mine back together is there a particular orientation that the shift drum need to be in before I put the crank housings back together?
Over here in the south folks like to ride in the mud with their atvs. They put big tires on them and they oftentimes struggle to rotate the tires and thick stuff. So a reduction is installed to make it easier to spin the tires. It reduces top speed but greatly increases torque on the low end.
Best step-by-step video on reassembly I've seen yet! Awesome job

When replacing the cam chain is it necessary to lay the machine on its side if you’re not pulling the motor out, or is that optional ?
It's not necessary but it just makes it easier for access.

No it will go together in any gear.
Do the bolts that hold the head down have any torque specs?
One hour and one minute I give the torque specs.
Thanks so much man, question- you can do a top end rebuild with the engine still in the frame, correct?
Yes you can
why do you fit a reduction gear mate ..?
Over here in the south folks like to ride in the mud with their atvs. They put big tires on them and they oftentimes struggle to rotate the tires and thick stuff. So a reduction is installed to make it easier to spin the tires. It reduces top speed but greatly increases torque on the low end.
