My guess is this powerplant is in such good shape because it's not actually abandoned. Rather it's in a mothball state. They keep it like this i think because a power plant like this has an ability that most others do not. Cold start ability which basically means even if the power grid is down completely this facility could start up and even help restore the grid. They left all the tools and maintenance manuals too in case they needed to return.

Warning for anyone trying to get to the control room: we were there a couple of months ago and triggered a sensor in the hallway between the stairs leading to it, an alarm went off and ten minutes later police were patrolling the area. Not sure if this is still the case but pay attention for a small red light coming from the bottom of the staircase..

Sometime, the power plants are still left "semi-working" as live power still feed thru them and transformers may still be in use even if the power plant itself is not generating power.

On the computer it was describing a LM2500. Just so you know, that's not a "diesel turbine." First of all there is no such thing. There are large diesel engines, which have pistons. These large engines are sometimes used in small power plants although they are not generally cost effective as anything other than backup or possibly as a peaker. The LM2500 is a gas turbine that typically runs on natural gas although it can run on kerosene (jet fuel). It is actually a large turbine that is highly similar to what you would find on a large jet airplane, although the energy is used to rotate the generator rather than produce thrust. These turbines are typically used in a manner you described (only when energy demand is high) and are known as peaker plants. Just thought you'd find that interesting.

Those PC's are running the user interface for a DCS system (Distributed control system). Can be from the brand Yokogawa or AutomationX for example. The hardware will probably be turned off so any user input will not change anything.

That would be my guess. The technicians were smart enough to consider civilians getting in and didn't want them doing things like starting or trying to connect a generator to the grid when it's not synchronized.

You cannot count on this being the case; if a place is being abandoned/mothballed the people doing the work can easily say "eh fuck this we're leaving anyway" and not make sure to disconnect everything. Power plants and anywhere with large industrial machinery are the most important places where the rule of "don't frob the buttons/switches" must be followed for this reason.

  • @rob3125

It may not be abandoned it all.
If the power is still on and computers is still running it means the power plant is in standby mode and can be operated in case of emergency.
Usually this type of small power plants are connected to main powerplants via remote connection and operated via SCADA system.
I know because here in Denmark we have such small unmaned power stations witch are in standby mode and can be operated via remote connection in case of emergency and during peak loads.

I visited two nuclear power plants here in Northern Italy a couple years ago, and in one of them despite having been shut down for over 30 years a lot of the original 1960/70 analog control systems were still online and being used to monitor the reactor since it still had its last fuel load inside. Very cool seeing all the old switches and gauges.
They even triggered the alarm test to show us what it would be like during a scram, it starts out like "well that's not so bad" but after a couple seconds literally everything starts beeping, blaring and flashing, it's loud af.

The PC was running Windows XP, so definitely a bit older. That said, most industrial SCADA systems like this are "air gapped" and not allowed to be connected to any networks that can connect to the internet, given how safety-critical they are. Updates are ferried over using offline media like a DVD to a isolated update server, and the computers themselves run only the OS and SCADA apps. The result is they're extremely stable, and pretty secure - though not perfectly so, as Stuxnet proved. Hell, there's a decent chance these systems are infected by it.

This is a jumpstart type of power plant built to restart a dead electrical grid incase of some grid attack or weather taking some of the grid down.
Provided that the damage to the grid cables have been repaired or the that piece of the grid has been taken off the main grid temporarily.
And taking government property isn’t a risk anyone should try.
Taking vital equipment no matter how small it is can provide consequences to your or their country.
Hell I wouldn’t doubt that they have a tracker in such electronic devices.
So in conclusion: it is a bad idea that could risk the government finding out and arresting you for theft of property! no matter how insignificant the item is they find you.

    • @JCarey1988
      @JCarey1988 4 месяца назад

If they aren't automatically synchronized to the grid (search youtube videos on this) the generators can be self-destructed by the outside electrical force turning them into giant-ass motors for a second until they fly apart.
If they do auto-synchronize, that won't happen, but unexpected power on the grid is likely to cause problems elsewhere if there's any real amount of fuel for the generators.
