The thing I love the most about the Hualian confession scene is its symmetry to one of their first moments back before Xie Lian was a god. When Guoshi was saying how baby Hua Cheng is cursed and whatnot, and he's fully melting down, Xie Lian calms him down by hugging him from behind, and then after a moment Hua Cheng turns around and hugs him back. Then in the confession scene, the two do essentially the exact same thing
I think the first picture in the book where Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are sitting in front of the lake can be described with the phrase "sometimes home is a person". So beautiful ~
Some of Calamity Xie Lian's lines are so funny tho😂 Like I was crying hard while reading it but then the "it's prettier than you" line came and I did not know whether to laugh or cry😭😂
I love how a simple act of kindness is what spared the world from Calamity Xie Lian who would have burned everything down. It's nice that it’s just a tiny act of compassion instead of this big ordeal.
The confession scene hit SO hard. All the more because in all of Hua Chengs prior actions you could just see and feel how he always wanted Xie Lian to like him. He kept teasing and like literally flirting with him, yet whenever there was an instant where Xie Lian showed signs of getting closer to him or having similar feelings, he pulled back, because he couldn't believe that he truly loved him as deeply as he did, or was so full of self loathing since he couldn't protect him before and felt like he didn't deserve it. All the more sad that he was ready to accept XL's rejection and still continue protecting him. Both their feelings were so raw and real and I was so relieved when they finally confessed to loving each other equally, despite everything that happened to them in the past. That HC didn't hold back and just teased and flirted with XL afterwards like the confidant and sassy bastard he is, was even better xD XL backstory was traumatizing and yet so well done. Seeing that HC was there during it and how it broke him, mad it all the worse. But then the conclusion to it was so satisfying and cathatrtic I couldn't believe it. Man, I really hope I get to live to see a day when the animation gets to this point and does it the justice it deserved, like they have so far :)

Dude I remember I read this book for the first time when I was fifteen and how happy I was when the confession scene happened. It was one of the most romantic things I'd ever read and I remember the utter joy I felt that the hundreds of pages of slow-burn finally paid lead to this moment. And then picture how I felt when Book 4 came right after that. I remember reading it and just being like". . . . . ta fuq is happening? The couple finally got together! Why are you taking me back to the past when my baby Xie Lean was suffering? What is this? This is just a book? Why does it hurt so much?" I think that the sword scenes and parent scene were one of the only few times that I began sobbing as I was reading. The only other ones were Erha, Mo Dao Zu Shi, and Charlotte's Web(I was about five or six when my mom read this to me and I cried when Charlotte died). I normally don't cry when I read sad scenes in books but I was a mess when I read those two scenes. Normally I don't come to love a character so deeply that it would hurt me that much when I see them suffer. I just remember the rage I felt and wanting to rush in and protect Xie Lian. But I know the pain was all necessary. Seeing Xie Lian at his worst truly makes you appreciate at his best. You respect him and are in awe of how much he has grown and how good of a person he's become. I love how his change din't happen overnight. It took centuries but now he's more at peace. The once crown prince is now a humble man able to find joy in the little things. Book 4 also makes you realize that Xie Lean, like anyone, is not perfect. He too has had his ups and downs(very deep downs) and still managed to find peace even after losing everything. And you truly feel grateful that he's found someone to spend the rest of his life with. Sorry for rambling on.
the farmer/bamboo scene will forever be my favorite part of the book bc of just how much that meant for xie lian and it really made a great display of his love for humanity. Anyway, that scene made me cry the hardest.

Something I noticed that made me so sad was when his parents died and he was laughing and crying it just made me think about how he constantly thinks that thoughout the series whether he should laugh or cry I swear that broke me😭😭😭
You know I realized there's a lot of parallels between Xie Lian and Wei Ying. Both went through horrible tragedies and in their darkest moments gave in to their resentment. But where Xie Lian came back from it, Wei Ying sank further and further until it cost him his live and many others. God I really do wish for a crossover between TGCF and MDZS - I woild love to see Xie Lian and Wei Ying bonding and sympathizing with each other over their trauma, what they've learned and of course, how awesome and devoted their husbands are 😄❤

yeah, the part when Muqing and Fengxin regard Hua Cheng as disgusting and forbid XL from getting closer to HC really made me cried rivers...MXTX really a good writer...the Chinese version is excellent. But I can't buy the physical books at the normal bookshops coz bl is banned in my country. So I can only read or purchase online...

You know, when I hit the temple scene (nothing good ever happens in a temple in an mxtx novel) I had to take a break before reading The Scene because I'd been spoiled for it an knew what was coming. It was horrible and I hated it but it didn't make me cry. What made me cry was when the rice guy gave Xie Lian his hat. I'm a sucker for moments of grace and that one had me bawling like a baby 😢
So this volume has like my fave sweet moment, that beautiful confession and then the most traumatic literary experience I've ever had :')....man I remember bawling my eyes eyes and being so taken aback cuz I hadn't cried this much with a book before, I was binge reading but I literally had to take a break after that so I stopped to recover and continue the next day xD But you're totally right all the painful experience made him the Xie Lian that we now love and came to understand how he is after knowing his (very tragic) story
xie lian had been slowly inching up my "most traumatized characters" list and that scene basically shot him up to top 5 easily. number 1 is still phos from hnk because if you can find me a character that's been through more than phos (and i consider the *waiting* its own trauma) while successfully arguing for said character, i will literally personally burn my entire book collection.
The one scene that makes my heart drop is the part where white no face tell all the people ths cure to face disease is stabbing xie lian and him screming help me, it hurts but we know he is okay

I think it will be as successful as GDF. Some time ago I pre-ordered book 6 and suprisingly I received it already last week.

I first watched the donghua and was going to wait for season 2 but then I saw a few of ur videos and also heard a few spoilers in the novel and then got really impatient and started to read it and I'm soooooooo glad I did! This arc is my favoriteeee I was so surprised to see such a vonrable part of hua Chang I always imagined him to be this cool red gay guy 😂 but I honestly loved this part of him the most! Chp 175 to 177 are littlerly my favorite in the novel 😃😃😃😃

Had the ebook on preorder so got it the minute it came out! I’m just so grateful to have a good translation now. While the fan translations are really good as far as they go, and are labours of love that are so much appreciated, they are rarely natural sounding English, so it’s difficult to get fully immersed. Having said that, I probably won’t be able to read more than a few pages until the weekend! Bit I’m looking forward to the release of the last book, because then I’ll do a read through right from the start.

When I first heard of the "tragic book four" I always imagined it to be a poorly written emo backstory. I could not have been more wrong. The subject matter is taken so extremely seriously and basically none of it is played for laughs or is cringy. It's a man's life completely falling apart at the seams.

Had the ebook on preorder so got it the minute it came out! I’m just so grateful to have a good translation now. While the fan translations are really good as far as they go, and are labours of love that are so much appreciated, they are rarely natural sounding English, so it’s difficult to get fully immersed. Having said that, I probably won’t be able to read more than a few pages until the weekend! Bit I’m looking forward to the release of the last book, because then I’ll do a read through right from the start.

When I first heard of the "tragic book four" I always imagined it to be a poorly written emo backstory. I could not have been more wrong. The subject matter is taken so extremely seriously and basically none of it is played for laughs or is cringy. It's a man's life completely falling apart at the seams.

I don’t know if you were informed by now, but TGCF was first released as a web novel in 2017, and it became popular online which led to them being officially translated and published as physical copies.
