The final-final boss of the NES version has some of the best music/fight scenes in a beat em up I've ever seen, sucks the original arcade cabinet didn't have that, and it really makes me appreciate the NES version even more
You guys, I love the PC Engine version. It took the NES version even further. There's something magic about the NES version music and speed though. BUT geez, There's just something amazing about hearing billy scream when you get the bad ending, then the epic 80s keyboard synth title music place when credits roll. Seeing Marion as a ghost. I don't know it is epic. too epic.
Peck Man oxygeninterface Oh man, I liked 3 on the NES. 3 on the Genesis... I'd actually rather play this. It was funny how the women died and made the man scream, though.
Well i'm so glad that software creations and Accolade (yes I'm meant by ballistics) weren't involved with this one. Because all of their genesis games sound like crap.
What happened to this game? The first Double Dragon on the Genesis was fantastic. It looked so close to the arcades it was crazy. The only issue it had was the music was a bit...grating but it was an arcade close version of Double Dragon you could play in the home with two players. I don't know what I'm looking at here but if you ask me the Nes port is more appealing. The music is the lone bright spot in this mess and I'm very happy I chose not to get this game when it was new. Although being honest, I never once saw it in stores but just the same I dodged a bullet.
I always felt this was a great game and those who complained about the controls just sucked at playing. I’ve beaten this numerous times which would be impossible if the hit detection and controls were awful as they say.
@@nebularain3338 it’s not clearly inferior like other ports of this game. You want choppy and slow look at the other versions from lesser known systems. This one has the music in par with the arcade and again players complain about the difficulty. I stand from what I said about those players.
My complaint with the arcade version isn’t the aged beat’em up mechanics. It’s just the AI is very cheap. Like fighting the second boss is terrible every time you fight him. He just shoulder charges when you get up or when you try to jump kick
opinions are opinions haha but this is my favorite double dragon game and double dragon 2 version too,i love this version back in the day and i play in these days too,i still have my double dragon 2 original in my megadrive, good play!
I can go back and play Double Dragon 2 and 3 on the NES anytime and still enjoy myself. The Genesis ports of the arcade versions of Double Dragon 2 and 3 were borderline unplayable for me due to awful hit detection.
Not just that, but the enemy followed you around perfectly, it was hard to get into position to hit them, especially when there were multiple on the screen. They'd follow any movement you made to a tee, and quickly too.
Notice how the hand that points in the direction you're supposed to go is a feminine hand with red makeup for the nails. Maybe its Marian's ghost guiding you to her killers.
Does anyone know how to give that super knee? when you jump, the moment you hit the ground, press the kick button and diagonal upwards, he performs a super knee that sends the enemy off screen
The super knee wasn't in the arcade or mega drive versions. Otherwise I'm sure he would have utilized it being as effective as it was in the nes and a couple of other ports.
@@Recon-cv1fe I played this game in my childhood on the mega drive, and I was able to do this super knee. I believe then that only in the version of megradrive did it have. Remembering that I'm Brazilian, and I played this game here in Brazil in the 90's
Wow what an awful ending. So you fight a ghost of yourself. Only to go into the closing as some instant nostalgia (cue the black and white) of the half dozen bosses you just fought. Then... The end.
Late reply Ik, but this is based on the original arcade version, after you killed the shadow warrior, there is no shadow boss (by which it only appeared in the nes and pc engine version), the game just ends saying you did it you avenged Marian.
I Never knew this game existed on Genesis until RUclips. No one ever had this, it must have been that difficult to come by. Why didn't he just shoot the Lees too? Why not just wait until they come out and ambush them? Rig their car with or garage door opener with a bomb or something. Yeah, I know, there wouldn't be a game if it made sense. :)
I never knew about a Genesis/Mega Drive port of Double Dragon 2: The Revenge. Well, it does look like a decent game to me. I just hate how the game just ends when it's beaten. Do Billy and Jimmy Lee truly get their revenge on the gang that killed Marion (in this version of the game)?
An improvement over the first DD, though again I'd rather play the NES. PC Engine CD, and arcade versions over this one. The sounds and music, outside of defeated enemies "puking" on the ground, are much easier on the ears than the first DD on this console.
This must be the Japanese version because I had every top game on earth back in the 80s and I never knew sega had a double dragon version till just now!!!

To be honest though, all of the major console ports had flaws. Some minor, some major. NES: Leveling up system, platforming, no continues SMS: Flickering, Hit detection can be questionable at times Genesis: Unresponsive Controls Lynx: Camera is way too close to you Gameboy: Platforming (although not as much as the nes version), gameplay feels sluggish Game Gear: In the words of jontron: WHO LOOKED AT THIS AND THOUGHT IT WAS OKAY?!

I'm not that familiar with the SMS version. I''ll go and try it out again. Who knows, maybe I just didnt give it a fair shot. Haha what, you don't like running around with a pistol? The GG version was pretty wtf for sure. It seems like they took a totally random game and struck the Double Dragon logo on it. It looked really good though, especially for GG. Thinking back, its amazing how poor so many DD games there were. You'd expect better for a series that gets as much respect as it does. Double Dragon Advance was awesome though. Not really in the running with these other versions since it's a good 15 years newer, but excellent game either way.
I agree, double dragon advance was by far the best version, as they pulled out all the stops with that game. And yeah, I honestly think that the game gear version was meant to be a completely different game, but at the last minute they just slapped the double dragon logo on it. The sad part is, it doesn’t even play well. I actually wanted to like that game for its music and graphics, but the hit detection has a mind of its own, the animation is very choppy, and the AI constantly gangs up on you. They honestly should’ve just ported the master system version to the game gear. The nes version isn’t a bad game by any means, it’s just very difficult as it has platforming, and all you get is three lives. Plus, what were they thinking with mode B? They should’ve just stuck to the ACTUAL co-op mode, hence the name *Double* Dragon
I always loved the soundtrack, I even recorded it to a cassette. The last boss music is truly amazing even today. But the rest of the game is just not good enough for Sega, it looks like a "HD texture pack" for the first game, which only made it much slower and less enjoyable...
ngl there are a few nice tunes here and there but it's still pretty weak for hitoshi sakimoto's standards he did an excellent job on captain america, gauntlet IV and devilish, and would go on to compose final fantasy tactics, so hey, gotta start somewhere
The enemy with the batons sucks, he has two batons yet he still gets his ass kicked by an opponent with no weapons? I'm guessing the Lees must be in LA because that's where shit is weird. Where else in the United States would one run into dozens of martial artists other than LA? And they gunned down Marian to teach them a lesson for what? Exposing their cocaine trafficking? Big deal, that's what people in LA do so what did the Lee brothers expose?
The redesign of level 2 is what the arcade game should have had. A stroke of genius on the developer's part there, but the rest of the game is awful. It looks like a Master System game, and not a great one at that.
