Tom Cruise stars in this sweeping epic set in Japan during the 1870s as Captain Nathan Algren, a respected American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient Imperial Samurai warriors in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly government policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Japanese warriors, placing him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his own sense of honor to guide him as The Last Samurai.

greetings from France 😉 Do you know that this film is based on the true story of Frenchman Jules Brunet who fought the Japanese Imperial Army alongside the last samurai and if you don't want to believe me, I invite you to go watch the video (the last samurai the true story)
I think it’s important to note that the title “The Last Samurai” does not refer to Tom Cruise’s character, it refers to Katsumoto. He was the last of the Samurai. Critics of this movie call it a “white savior” movie, which I don’t think is true. Tom Cruise didn’t save them, they saved him.
True but remember Tom cruise was the only man who came back alive after the battle and saved those innocent souls
The main conflict was between a modern industrial oligarch trying to destroy the power of the old military oligarchy. Imura kept referring to his soldiers or his guards, not the emperor's. His goal was to have the Emperor under his thumb as was traditionally why the Shogunate existed. It was, in other words, a power play between two political giants representing two ways of life.
Ken Watanabe is playing Katsumoto.....brilliantly. He got an Oscar nomination for this his first English movie!!!! He made Cruise bring his A game to every scene. Zimmer's music is exceptional, too.
Samurai is also the plural...so The Last Samurai could mean Katsumoto, or Algren or the whole Samurai culture.
Yes, it's easy for an English speaker to assume that Samurai in the context of the title of the Movie is singular. But, the title could just as easily mean the last of the Samurai. And as Omura stated in the movie, there were other groups of Samurai still living in other regions of the country. Enough that, if they all joined together, there would be 10 years of rebellion. So, Algren wasn't specifically THE last Samurai.
@@uemiThis whole rebellion happened because of the culture clash between old school Japan and the developed west aka the US in this instance. Japan for like over 1000 years never was invaded and they therefore stayed pretty cut off from the rest of the world, and was ruled by clans. Then the current emperor tried to unite the clans, but when u lean "left or right" someone will always disagree. So some clans kept for them selves, or fought between them selves for land, property, influence and so on.. When the west interfered, the emperor tried to westernise what at that time was under his influence, where the clans outta his sphere of influence rebelled. Clans looked at is as intrusive move in their +1000 years way of life. I guess this movie represent the last of the Samurai culture or way of life. I personally believe the last samurai is Katsumoto (who tho represent the whole of the old Japan in general, as the last pillar of hope, tradition and culture etc). But it could litterally be Katsumoto, Algren, or the Samurai way of life in general.. Your personal conclusion will forever be subjective. :P
This movie is gorgeous: Music, cinematography... Scene where Samurai's practise gorgeous... Scene where Samurais emerge from mist: I get goose bumps every time.

Not many people catch the tiger in the flag part. That's why Katsumoto stops the other samurai when they were about to Kill Tom Cruise character. Katsumoto probably saw it as a sign and it kinda was. BTW this is one of my favorites movies ever, I have seen it a ridiculous amount of times and I have cried every time including this one.

the new mini series "Shogun" stars Hiroyuki Sanada (Ujio the swordmaster who teaches Tom Cruise to fight with the katana) and is pretty dang good thus far.
Episode 2 was fabulous. Not sold on the guy playing the pilot. He just doesn't have the charisma I expect.
I was a giant fan of the novel. I'll re-read that giant beast any time.

No samurai and ninja were not different time periods. Ninja were used by samurai for assasinations, to gain entry into castles etc...
Samurai did not respect them. They viewed them as "masterless mercenaries" and rats.
@ahoyforsenchou7288 depends on how you define respect. Much like honor. Samurai honor isn't how we'd define honor. To a samurai honor is just following orders. If they're told to kill their child, they do it for honor. Nobody in the west would call that honorable. Hattori Hanzou(and his family) was a famous ninja that was integral to Tokugawa Ieyasu's unification of Japan. Performed a rescue of his family at Kaminogo Castle, served with distinction in many battles, commanded an Iga unit of 150 men, etc...
ninja were just those specialized in assassinations (the stereotypical look of them was not as common as youd think, theyd often look like normal peasants but yes they existed in the age of samurai, as late as sengoku jedai

Its not like he murdered her husband. It happened in a war, like she said they both did their duty.

It is wonderful movie based loosely on historical events. Tom Cruise's part is based on the story of a French officer who worked with the Japanese, and the Samurai are based on those of the Satsuma Rebellion. Of course, the Samurai were not as pure and morally motivated as presented, and there are many other differences to real history, but the movie does a terrific job of capturing a romantic vision of traditionalism's stand against modernization. One major difference is that the Satsuma Samurai did not reject firearms, they just did not have many people trained in how to use them, since the government in power had a near monopoly on that kind of knowledge.
The next team-up should be with EOM. You two would be like peas in a pod! And he has dogs!

EOM is one of my favorites. He's so dang funny.
The other main religion in Japan is Shinto. Both religions though have associations with important traditional martial arts. There are some innacuracies about this movie but there are real events that took place in that era that gave foot to this movie. I had a good time with you guys! 😂
Always like the scene where Algren ask the new rifleman to shoot him. In his mind it’s a win/win. Algren either is killed (ending his suffering) or is proven correct that they are not ready for battle!

This was the foundation of the National Japanese Army, as opposed to the separate villages having their own mini armies. This was the unification of Japan under one ruler.
After all these years, still my favorite movie of all times. Greetings from Germany, Thomas.

Never saw The Last Samurai, but I can still put a few trivia bits about it, for James and anybody else who is interested in knowing:
- Released in 2003; directed by Edward Zwick; written by John Logan, Edward Zwick, and Marshall Herskovitz.
- For Ken Watanabe, who played Katsumoto (the "last samurai" of the title), I believe this was his first American film.
- James and others may not recognize his name, but maybe his face - Timothy Spall (Graham, the photographer/interpreter) was Peter Pettigrew in the Harry Potter movies.
- The Last Samurai received four Oscar nominations in 2003: Best Supporting Actor (Ken Watanabe as Katsumoto), Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Sound Mixing. It didn't win any of its categories - Lord of the Rings: Return of the King was so dominant that year that it won in most of the technical categories, and Tim Robbins (Andy from Shawshank Redemption) won for "Mystic River" in the Supporting Actor category.
- The Last Samurai has been compared to the film "Dances With Wolves" from 1990, which has a similar plot, just with a different culture (the Lakota Sioux rather than the Samurai).
- Although set in Japan, filming was done primarily in the Taranaki region of New Zealand. This was done because the farmland resembled the crops from Japan in that era, and Mount Taranaki looked similar to Mount Fuji.
- It's been mentioned before, but The Last Samurai is inspired by French Imperial Guard officers, the bulk of whose story became the one of Tom Cruise's character Nathan Algren.
The scene where Taka dresses Algren in the armor, is the most intimate scene in recent memory.
To me, Katsumoto was the last Sanurai. Such a good movie.

Also, the last samurai was Saigo Takamori. He had his own last stand as well. While Japan had a lot of Western military advisors, there wasn't one fighting with Saigo, but it definitely brought inspiration for a beautifully made movie.

From what I've read, ninja and samurai did exist at the same time, at least for a while, but had different training, different weapons and tactics and had different styles of fighting or were used in different circumstances.
The BIG gold rush was in California 1849. But there have been several gold rushes. Most notable on the Klondike river in the Yukon province of Canada and another in eastern Colorado. The latter of these put cities like Denver and Boulder on the map.
The last Samurai is Katsumoto, not Nathan Algren for the the simple reason that while Algren grew to respect and adhered to the samurai code, he was not a Samurai. Samurai could not stand the shame of defeat and never would have fought to get up again and again when fighting with the bokken (wooden swords). This is a very American trait, and a very un-Japanese one.
I really love this movie. It is a fictionalized telling of the last Shogun (not samurai) of Japan, Saigo Takamori.
For centuries Japan was ruled by Emperors. In 1192 AD Minamoto Yoritomo seized power and created the role of Shogun and from that point forward until the 19th century, a shogun ruled in Japan.
In 1603 after the Portuguese had been trading with Japan, and spreading Christianity the Shogun decided on an isolationist policy.
This ended in 1853 when an American Admiral (Matthew Perry) sailed into Tokyo harbor and threatened to open fire unless Japan would open itself up to trade with the west.
After that, things started moving quickly and the Japanese people, including the Samurai generally split into one of two camps, with one group insisting on becoming a modern super power with the other wanting to be sure not to forget their past.
This is the backdrop of the movie. And the rest is history.

The touching scene where she puts the armor on Tom. Has a deep meaning. When you know to that the Samurai considered the white Gei to be their burial clothes. So she was preparing him for him burial.
Best Cruise film if you ask me.
Japan did reject trade and influence from the US until WW2. It's amazing that they ultimately learned from us and then surpassed us in many ways. Also ironically Japanese companies and citizens own quite a bit of land in Hawaii now.
Great reaction. From what I remember, the movie was based on a true story but ofcourse was changed a little a bit. Instead of an American, it was a French guy who sympathized with the samurai and fought with them.
The character of Katsumoto is loosely based upon a historical samurai, named Takamori Saigo. He led a rebellion against the modernization programs of the Emperor Meiji.
Samurai is also plural for Samurai, so "The Last Samurai" is actually a reference to all the Samurai in the movie and basically the "end of an age" if you will

The emperor was the last one who fought for his people. He was in service (samurai) to the best interest of the people

there are 2 other movies that can answer that question: Little Big Man (1970) with a young Dustin Hoffman, and Dances With Wolves (1990) with Kevin Costner. and then Avatar (2009) if you want to include that into this list.
Directed by same guy who made Glory, another superb war movie. Bushido, was practically a belief unto itself.
This movie was filmed around Mt Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand.

I believe the ones that were trying to remove the samurai, knew that the emperor would be much easier to control without the samurai influence.

The story itself isn't a true story, but it was inspired by several events that occurred around the same time.
Katsumoto was the last samurai. And it is based on a True story. The story of Jules Brunet. He was a french officer, who stood with the samurai.

Ninjas are are just Samurai that are secretly trained as assassins. Some women and other classes were trained as ninja but for the most part it was just Samurai. Any time period of Samurais is also a time period of ninjas
the little kid was the son of the dad Algren killed. the big guy beat him up for him basically, because physically he couldnt.... But u can see the anger in this boys eyes... The big dude payed respect to the son and his late father by beating up Algren, but Algren also gained a shit ton of respect by not giving in and kept getting up, when normal people would have stayed down, even after the first hit to the head lol. its just deep af
This movie is not based on a true story. It is however a fair distillation of the sentiment and situations that went on during the unification era in Japan. It's an amalgamation that takes real events and weaves them into its own narrative of sorts. For a large chunk of its history, Japan was ruled by Shogunate leaders with the Emperor's role being one of symbolic nature. During the unification however the power would fall back into the hands of the Emperor ending centuries of warfare amongst warring clans and giving rise to the merchant class within Japanese society. This also brought about an end to the nations isolation and saw efforts towards modernization and an effort to become a world power. The role of Samurai in society dwindled from being loyal protectors of their noble lords to that of street beggars and starving artists. The peasantry had long suffered at the hands of Samurai and so despite respecting their roles in regard to tradition, it was seen as necessary and a good thing to see their decline within the societal structure of things for the sake of progress. This is when concepts such as Bushido came into the mainstream of Samurai ideology and practice as they sought new ways to justify their purpose.

The calligrafy means "Samurai". Even if Algren can never be a samurai, the kid considered him as one. Katsumoto was the last samurai.

I loved this movie because Tom Cruise was not the real star. But, Cruise did portray his character well as a man who literally had nothing to lose and then, found something to believe in again. Alghren was never a samurai, but he understood them and respected them. As close as a person can get who was not born Japanese.
Bushido has always been a focus of mine and this movie checked a lot of boxes for me.

Ninjas came about because of the Samurai, samurai came before ninjas but they are from the same general era. Samurais were lords, the same as knights in the west, ninjas originated as farmer rebels going against their samurai lords. All ninja weapons other than swords taken from the samurai were farmer tools that were turned into weapons. Samurai were about strength and defense, ninjas were about stealth and speed.
I think the last Samurai overall means the end of them, that way of life. That group was the last Samurai. I don't think it means just one person like most people do.

Just a heads-up. The words 'samurai' and 'ninja' are the same for both singular and plural.
Katsumoto wasn't white-lying about anything. He was speaking literally, and treating 'honor' as a social currency: He was GIVING her great honor, by showing everyone around that her home and hospitality were the best he could offer to a (guest/prisoner). Her personal feelings in the matter never enter consideration.
It's plural, they are all the last Samurai. At least that is my interpretation.

My friends actually samurai and ninja existed at the same time periods, and they both came to an end after Japan modernize. Also. Ninja or Shinobi is most likely are more of our modern understanding of Japanese culture not saying real Shinobi den existed in Japan.
Tommis not the last samurai. Japanese doesnt have a distraction between singular and plurar. 1 samurai and 50 samurai is still samurai. Its the last of the samurai era.

Even though they're in Japanese (I'm sure you can find subtitles), legendary director Akira Kurosawa did two films that are about samurai or have a similar aesthetic: Seven Samurai (1954, done in black-and-white), and Ran (1985, which earned Kurosawa his only Oscar nomination for directing). I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, but those are the two I remember off the top of my head. Maybe two titles to add you your watch list?
Algren isnt the Last Samurai in the title of the movie, its the Samurai as a whole.
In the real battle it was 500 samurai against 30.000 imperial troops. They where outnumbered 60 to 1

Fun fact, the Samurai and the Shogun were the Japanese equivalents of the Confederacy in the U.S. so, Cruise's character goes from defeating American Samurais to becoming a Japanese Confederate, right?.
Regarding the title: the word 'samurai' doesn't have a plural form, so it really can refer to the samurai in general
Granted, this is set in the past, but current US Army doctrine is quite clear. While not specifically codified to my knowledge, allowing "no quarter" is extremely frowned upon to the point it is prohibited by official Field Manuel. That's as close to illegal as you can get while still giving a soldier a sliver of wiggle room for extreme situations.
Making sure everyone gets it: The key is THEY ARE the last Samurai, not HE IS. Collective nouns and all…

The US had the great civil war, where two idiologies clashed. Its basically the same here. Just more rooted in history rather than different points of view i guess... Its complicated.
Mabye watch 47 RONIN with Keanu Reeves next, supposedly this film was based on it about Japanese samurai who's master was murdered leaving his men to seek revenge for their master
The movie is loosely based on the story of a French soldier.
One thing that I've never seen anyone talk about is the relationship between Taka and her husband. Since we never see them together, there is nothing to indicate that she loved him. She was from the samurai class, and her marriage to him may have been political. In other words, it may have been her duty and not her choice. I don't know either way, but it would make her romance with Algren less "weird".

The plural of samurai is samurai, so the title may not be, and probably isn't, singular.
God I wish there was less talking during this movie. I mean I don't mind the commentary about a specific scene but there was just too much non related jokes and side stories during the dialogue...especially when Tom is narrating his experiences as a captive.

To give a backstory of Japan at this time. They had just finished a civil war. The samurai were in charge and they fought to keep power. The film takes liberties with the idea the samurai rejected modernism. This isn't true. The used guns for hundreds of years. Even after the samurai lost the war, they continued to try and conscript a new army to fight the Meiji government. To avoid another long period of civil war the government enacted laws making it illegal to carry swords and organized assasinations of the top samurai.
This is a great movie I tell you that, but historically it is far from accurate.
- America did not teach the Japanese on how to use gun, neither did the Portuguese but they did export guns to the Japanese
- The earliest person to use gun in battle was a warlord named Oda Nobunaga from way back in the 1500s, in comparison to the movie was set in the 1800s
- The Japanese was great at gun battles for quite some time compared to Europe at the time

A lot of these reactors think they need to react to every second in a film, mostly overreacting, and with doing this missing a lot of details and emotions. its ok to shut up every once and a while and just enjoy what you see in silence
