- Finally back to building! In this episode we create a nice little school/classroom for the village children. And, in the process, we find a suitable use for Lapis!
This is my Minecraft Multiplayer Let's Play from the Mindcrack Server. I'm sorry but we are currently not accepting applications.

"When you get to be older, and have jobs and stuff, you're gonna regret hating school."-Beef, who currently makes his living playing video games.
Nice progress on the village. I like how Beef has a story for each building; it makes it really believable that people live there and have true functions for these buildings.
In Canada (Saskatchewan) we have smart boards. Smart boards are touch screen boards. So we get to actually get to go up and interact with it. We've had them for a few years now. Some rooms do have an extra black board AND white board. So we can use any option.
Another vote for leafy roof here! What others have said about putting glowstone in the leaves sounds cool.
When I was in school we usually just called it "the board". Chalkboards, blackboards and dry erase boards were all called "the board". Also, both chalkboard and blackboard meant the same thing and we used both terms, but I think the term chalkboard was more common in elementary and middle school and the term blackboard more common in highschool.
You could try and see if an awning of leaves and fences would look good covering the teacher's area, you now, to protect the books from direct rainfall. Also don't forget; you can put cacti, roses, tall grass, ferns, and saplings into the potted plants.
For lighting you could put torches under the floor, since it's made of half slabs. There should be a cieling because the vines will keep on growing down into your face. The blackboard looks like a wide screen plasma tv as though it's not a classroom but a cinema.
The flower pot really pulled the whole thing together, it wouldn't be a classroom without it.
Hey Beef, for the roof you can put a bunch of leaves overhead with water on top so it seems like the leaves are keeping out the environment, and the dripping water makes it feel like an outside schoolhouse.
@VintageBeef There are ways to power redstone lamps without any connecting redstone. The easiest will only cost you 1 dust. Place the dust on top. Power the lamp directly (on the same Y layer) with a repeater and redstone torch then use a piston to push the repeater away. As long as you don't update the dust on top the lamp will remain on.
school is fun. when u get the lunch and the breaks it feel so relaxin
Beef you don't have to place the lever after you place the redstone lamp, just place the lever and turn flip the switch, then you can place the redstone lamp and it will be powered. This will save the hassle of breaking the extra wooden slab.
Another suggestion for you Beef, make hidden lighting that matches with the wood, use pistons on top of glowstone, but then again you would need to put them aligned with regular full blocks instead of slabs.
You can connect the lamps to redstone and have a lever on the entrance, this way when you walk into the classroom you can turn the lights on/off.
You should put lighting techniques under the teacher's desk and under the student's chairs (the lift shines through the stairs/slabs unless they are upside down). Also you should add branches from the jungle trees with side logs and leaves as a roof.
I love curb your enthusiasm, I first saw it when I was twelve 2 years ago, we still have all the box sets :)
I thought of putting the chest underneath the teachers desk and it still is accessible because of the half slabs. Also have fences in a straight line from the trees for lighting.
Btw you can put the childrens names on the chairs (signs) and you can put something like a crafting bench under the teachers bench.
For the lighting, if you said you wanted to do branches above the classroom, you could make hanging lamps from them, with fences and glowstone and stuff~
Hey Beef, you can place the lever before lamp! Just switch the lever and when you place the lamp it will be already powered!
I think we all would want to learn in a school/class made by Beef on the MindCrack server.
Make a flower pot in the corner of the classroom so it looks like a trash can, and a chest near the teacher's desk for pencils and stuff. Also making more tables for children near the walls would be nice, 6 children isn't a lot. Just some suggestions I'd like if you put. Great video Beef :D
I like the idea of a leafy roof. Keeps it natural and covers the class. also for the map it might take some room tho you can take green and blue wool and alternate them to make it look like an actual map instead of a framed piece of paper but you have the call on that.
You have such awesome ideas Beef! A ceiling of leaves, but staggered so it still has the jungle feel, maybe a piece missing here and there to let in natural light. Snow for a smoother white board. A map of the island would be cool. And where are the kiddo's cubbies for their backpacks and stuff?
Hey Beef, for lighting you could put a ton of torches behind the whiteboard and blackboard since wool is transparent.
If half slabs are still transparent, put some under the floor, too.
I didn't really realize how fun school was till about 10th grade. Then I got to college and that's the greatest (as long as you enjoy your classes I suppose).
3:50 To answer your question: Chalkboard, Black boards, once heard it called a green board by a teacher not from the states due to that particular blackboards color. I like white boards and smart carts (white board in projector form! woo!)
Beef, you might want to considering insetting that blackboard one block, it makes it look more realistic - also, it might be a good idea to put a "half roof," which shades the front of the classroom - you can still see the sky from the back and it's a place to hide from the rain. Also, you might want to put an elevated workbench on one side and a elevated chest on the other of the teacher's desk to make a u-shaped design. :D
Plant jungle saplings in the class and cut down the trunks, but leave the top leaves, perfect roof and natural.
Vintagebeef, the master of realistic decoration in minecraft
You don't really need any lighting. The only place mobs can spawn is on the globe. To give the "room" just a bit of lighting during the night, you can always put torches on the fence. If you want to incoorporate a workbench, you should raise the floor half a block on the sides or in the back and put workbenches on top so that the kids have a chance to be creative; then you can also put item frames on the workbenches with items for the kids to use like clay, string, ender pearls (for jewelry).
Beef! You don't need lighting in the classroom, only on the teachers desk which is upside-down halfslabs. The rest of the room are halfslabs and stairs! :D
Hey beef! Great episode, as always. Just for future reference wanted to say that if you want to block vine growth from obstructing your builds, place some mid-air tripwire in the treetops! Keep up the great work man! :D
Love the build beef :) I'd definitely leave it open, and put string under the vines to stop them growing.
Use a cauldron as a wastepaper basket.
Put a mosaic of maps (or single block paintings) in the whiteboard.
Put a slab over the chest to make it like part of the desk, like the Ikea ones. (yes, light glitch, but it will be fixed in 1.4, I think).
i like the leaf ceiling idea, it would look good if you can see the sky through the leaves so one layer. and make a glowstone ceiling light
I don't think there's actually any spawnable space in the school other than the globe, so you don't need to light it and then villagers should avoid it at night. I'd also put a ceiling over the blackboard side to make it look more built into the cliff but leave the back open
I think place a leaf covering that looks somewhat natural. You can place lights in the leaves as ceiling lights.
first day of the holidays and beef build a school
Schools have projectors now do put an iron block hanging from the ceiling with a item frame with an ender pearl on the front.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone build a school before, it's a good idea!
Use the trip wire as a string to hang up lights.
And you should inset the blackboard so it is one behind the book shelves. (Need somewhere to set down chalk and erasers)
technically the only place mobs would spawn was on your globe, so lighting isn't that big of an issue really. Also, if you use string in front of the blackboard/chalkboard it kind of looks like there are words on the board (as long as you don't mind the side view where the words aren't exactly on the board)
Suggestions of mine are, move the redstone lamp under the fences and move the blackboard 1 block back
Hey beef, first of all id like to thank you for all the vids you post you create great entertainment for all of us. My idea for the roof of the school would be to have different levels of leaves eased into one another so the levels dont just jump. Once again thanks for all the vids.
You should make branches stick out from the surrounding trees, and make the lamps hang down from them with fences. It will look awesome
And BTW, you can put string under a vine to stop it from growing down, but you won't easily see the string. ;)
Beef, you should make a storage room, probably under the classroom, where the students can store their stuff, and also an area to store stuff like pencils, paper, paperclips, etc.
Also add a bit of a leafy roof so your students wouldn't get too hot and end up fainting in class :P
Primary school was the best! Every one was friendly, no assholes or ignorant people, nice teachers, every body new you and the best friends i have are primary school friends!
Hey Beef, there won't actually spawn much in the classroom, since everything is half slabs/stairs (the normal ones) the only thing you have to do is light up the globe.
I'm just saying, putting flower pots down on the floor looks nice as dog food bowls... I know that wouldn't be in the class room, but it would look nice in houses with dogs and cats. Also, you should put a leaf roof that has a branch in the middle and connects to a tree so that it looks like a branch of the tree
Beef you could put some fence beams as a roof-like structure but you know, open, and you'll resolve the lighting issue using glowstone on those beams, as lamps, also you could use maps on the globe maybe
You can place stuff on top of upside down halfslabs and stairs, it was in a snapshot a while back.
the classroom black board looks like a cinema
I absolutely vote for either a roof or a canopy of some sort. No teacher would ant vines growing to hang down in the middle of their classroom.
This may be abit ott but for the bits of the village that have a couple trees over it, u shud put like a middle canopy of shrubs with a few holes so abit of light comes in like light rays
Now, I seriously respect you for designing
Your building amazes me everytime. I think something would be impossible to make, but you do it easily. :) Keep it up Beef.
I think suspending lamps somehow from the tree canopy would look pretty cool
As a university student in her twenties, I can say; school was abysmal and I still don't understand why anybody claims it to be the best years of their life. On the other hand, college was enjoyable and university is where it's really at! :) anyway. The village school is looking really good, I especially like the globe and clock!
You should put vines on the globe to make land areas, and have a snow golem walk on top to make it look like the north pole.
leave the roof open and also for the lighting if you put a light source under a closed piston you still get the light from it
Beef, you should make branches coming out of the trees to make a bit of a canopy/roof but still have the "open" feel.
glass roof could look cool! it would keep back vines, have a nice look, especially for something more classy like...a classroom:) and it would keep vines back, which would make it look more natrual if they fell on the top of it
1. we usually use WHITEboards... 2. I also think you should leave it open, maybe extend preexisting leaves a bit. Let them get rained on! 3. i don't know why you think you need lighting... half slabs!
A roof made of leaves would be a good idea. I don't think many students would like to be out side without any shade in tropical weather.
Make a leaves roof, mixed, with a few leaves dropping down. It'd give a nice effect. You could also grow a few vines.
Hey Beef,
I would suggest to create some kind of roof above your school, because it is so often raining on the MindCrack server that your school would be flooded from time to time... and we all know school shouldn't be canceled in a case of rainy weather, because education is important... even here ;)
Maybe try taking melons and putting them at the bottom of the vines. That would make the trees look like they bear fruit. There is also the possibility of using a glow stone block, it provides light and keeps vines from growing too far.
Beef! Try a ceiling with branches and leafs with redstone lamps in'em. Easy lighting and it'll still look very natural!
redstone torches under redsstone lamps light them up as well, so you dont always need a switch
beef instead of just adding a roof of leefs or what have you add big and small jungle trees so it covers the sky compliantly so there is not direct sunlight passing though (stops the rain and looks like its open)
Beef, you could just put glowstone under the floor since they're half slabs and make the whiteboard iron blocks since they're glossy like a whiteboard.
Dunno if it's been said yet, but regardless, maybe green wool for the chalkboard, or a mix of gray and dark gray, simulating long term use where it's covered in chalk residue.
Very nicely done video today. Indeed, it is really enjoyable to see a regular MindCrack episode after all those special episodes. However, they were brilliant, too! Your classroom looks good. I felt remembered of one of these Western-movie like schools which are a bit outside town. Furthermore, I saw your farming area and I wondered if you'll also create areas for the carrots and potatos?
Either way, I enjoyed this episode exceedingly; very cool; keep it up!!
Beef it's awesome. But I have two suggestions for you about the chalkboard. The first one is about the actual shape. To me it looks to much like a movie screen. My suggestion is for you to add a one block row of black wool and add a three one block vertical columns of bookshelf moving inwards. My second is about the writing. If you add random string in front of the chalkboard it will look like writing.
@VintageBeef put glowstone under each desk, love ya beefy!
Beef! You can use the placeable string to block vines from going and keep it looking natural still!
Thank you buddy - you helped me so much and you don't even know. Keep up the awesome episodes.
chalk boards with chalk white boards with the markers and we have these smart boards that are hooked up to computers and are so cool
You should leave it wide open. Like you said, it gives you a feeling.
If you had a leaf ceiling, then you could have fences hanging down like vines with pumpkins or glowstone at different heights.
I believe the minecraft globe would be cubical in shape, so the Lapis block is perfect.
I'm not completely sure if this will work, but I think you could use string to block the vines from growing too far down. That way you wont need a roof to stop them and you can barely see the string.
If you do go with the leaf roof, put glowstone hidden inside of it so it glows through.
In Ireland we called them black boards but we mostly use white boards now and some fancy schools ( i hear from rumors) use interactive boards which i'm not to sure about. but yeah White boards are used over here.
"Solid piece of wood digging in your back" - LOL XD
I prefer the canopy option, but you could make the lamps hang in the air (maybe connect with fences?)
I feel like the chairs blend into the floor so if you change the color of the block it might look a little bit better
Redstone lamps hanging from the ceiling for lighting! :D
You should put a roof over the school... not only can mobs drop in for a surprise visit... but with how much it rains on the mindcrack server, there'd never be school. xD
Without roof looks better i gues, but maybe you van make a hang-bridge above the black-board, so you can make houses in de trees as well. Love the lighting!
You should put leaves on the highest leaves of the jungle, it would stop rain and keep the 'open' feel
I think you should just make fence gates going into the room and let the teacher walk around like he/she is observing the class.
When you have more mob heads put them on item frames on the boards, as if they are learning about different types of mobs :)
Make some hanging redstonelamps on the ceiling. The cable or lines will be out of halfslabs.
Hi Beef did you know that for the teachers desk you can put a pot if you would invert the slabs with the stairs. What i mean by that is put upside down stairs in staid of slabs.
I think you should make the roof... since it rains all the time on the server, you wouldnt want the viallgaer children (or adults) getting wet.
Love the Videos
beef for the redstone lamps you can just put the lever down and then turn the lever on and then place the lamp
Also flower pots with flowers in them would be great
Hey Beef if you put some branches hanging over the classroom, you can have lamps hanging down on fences from them ! :)
