tips for a para as a former instructional assistant -
try to be kind & patient with them! I'm not sure what your para's schedule looks like, but I had 10 different groups/classrooms I had to go in everyday and 24 students that I had to work with, so the last thing I needed was the gen ed teacher acting like I was in the way/ignoring me completely. Also, please try to have an area available for them to sit/work with that student. Many teachers didn't even give me the time of day & I ended up in a tiny chair or on the floor with my students. They're also super underpaid so just keep in mind they're there to help that student and make things easier for you! I know you're super kind, but teachers not taking me seriously/acting like I was in the way (and how underpaid and unappreciated that job is) is what led me to quit that position, leaving all of those students without someone for a few weeks. I'm sure it'll definitely be an adjustment, but you'll enjoy having someone extra there!
I'm at a better school & have a much better position now, but that one was definitely a struggle. Have a good week 💜💜

I always would forget to take first day of school pics of my kids until my teaching teammate shared that she takes 2nd day of 2nd grade pics. From then on that’s what I do too! You could take 4th day of 4th grade pics. Glad you are having a great start to the year!
What do you do with you guinea pigs at the weekend? Do you bring them home with you or leave them in school and come in everyday to feed them?

I was a para in an ABA room (AKA I worked with students with disabilities so there were a lot of paras in the room) and one of the main things I loved about the main teacher I worked with is that she would checked in with us and make sure we were doing okay/ were comfortable running a program. There were so many times I would be like “I’m sorry to bother you but I have a question” and she would always tell me not to be sorry and that’s why she’s there. Also, sometimes just giving a direction is very helpful. Like we might think helping the child one way is useful but you might have another idea/approach. Or sometimes we don’t know what to do at all and having you communicate and lead us is so appreciated until we get the hang of things. :)

You should consider becoming a mentor down the long run, you would help train such amazing teachers. I love your advice and conscious discipline. Hey! Love the vlog as always. Q: you said you quietly acknowledge undesirable behaviors, what are options you give if they decide not to make a good decision?
As for the para, I para’d for 5 years. We are usually more than willing to help but the biggest piece of advice is to be conscious of your language. It always angered me to be mentioned in the possessive. If that makes sense. We are there for the student(s), we don’t belong to a teacher. Oh, and they get paid crap! Starvation wages. This is in no way directed at you for this video. Just general advice from personal experience.
Yes I totally agree and will watch that! Paras are so needed and deserve way more credit than they are given! As for the behavior I give them options depending on the behavior for example if a student is not getting any work done and talking/throwing things to stay distracted. I may offer them to sit at my desk or on the carpet for example and help get them started. I compliment them on getting started and that they made a good choice by sitting at my desk to get their work done. Hope that helps!
You said the 2nd day was totally different, a 360. Just a friendly correction, you say something is a 180 when it is different. A 360 would mean it came all the way around to where it started, meaning no change.

Hello!! How do you deal with missing assignments? I'm used to kinder when that wasn't a problem!
I dont assign hw and I just make sure in class we talk about where my "turn in" bin is! We do alot of class work so missing assignments arent usually an issue

Hi! Can you explain what some of the rewards for students vs. teacher that you use are? I'm doing it with my first graders and I'm worried I'm going to run out of good rewards!
Every week we make a list as a class! I ask them what things they want and I write them down on my whiteboard! We vote for the week and make a list again every week! Some examples previously are: pj day, bring your plushie to school, donut party, extra recess, 20 min stem bins, mix match day, different name day etc! The kids will def help out with all the options :)

Just curious do take the entire guinea pig cage home each weekend or do you have a second cage at your house?
I overfill food/hay friday night before I leave and they are good until I come back Monday morning!
@@KathyKellogg Please consider taking them home. What if they run out of water or eat all the food in one day or decide to throw food out the cage? Leaving them on their own for two whole days is such a big risk that one shouldn’t be willing to take
