- Exploring the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town was a great decision, as we immersed ourselves in a journey through history within its ancient walls. Imagining the events that transpired within this fortification was both exhilarating and thought-provoking. From the elegant residences of the Governor and his Second-in-Command to the grandeur of the Banquet Hall, every corner revealed a fascinating piece of the past. As we traversed through each of the five bastions and observed the haunting cells where prisoners endured unimaginable hardships, our perspective widened. It was an eye-opening experience that left an indelible mark, reminding us of the enduring significance of this historic landmark. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #Castleofgoodhope #capetown

I'm from South Africa but living in the uk since 2016, and I miss South Africa so much. South africa will always be home I'm so proud of our country 🇿🇦. First time watching your video and it really does hit home. There is such a longing to go back home. God willing it will happen. Thank you for sharing these video videos esp for those who live in other countries. It's so lovely to see my beautiful country and the lovely weather❤️. Thank you and God bless you both.
Take it from someone who emigrated, returned to SA, and re-emigrated. The South Africa we used to know does not exist any more. It is gone. Be thankful that you are in a place where you can raise children and grandchildren safely to have a decent future. Groete vanuit Niew-Seeland.
Was fantasties. Ek waardeer elke program baie.
I remember coming here on a school tour in Std 2. Thank you so much for a very interesting and informative tour. So good to pause and look at stuff and not be rushed through by a tour guide. Hope Sonyas knees were up to the challenge and not too painful. Lots of memories of Cape Town. I particularly love the paintings
I was stationed in the castel in 1964 as militory defence, i remember the dungeons with engravings on the walls by the prisoniers they could hear the sea hitting the walls which was 20 ft thick, they were in total blackness, it must have been a terrible experience for them. i remember our dining room serviced by veniculler lift for the food. Hope this helps your visit.
Very fascinating, thank you. I have never been to South Africa but your videos are a virtual treat!
Thank you so much fo a very interesting tour of the castle. Well done. We actually enjoy all your videos. You make us feel we with you on your travels.
Hi guys this video ticked all the boxes for me the bollards like old cannon are the same as in Amsterdam!!! If you check out the bricks you will see how small they are this is the same in the Netherlands. The information about the first South African in ww1 lost 2300 men in one battle out of 3000 beating off 10 German battalions in the process !!! Now you can see why there are so memorials in all the small towns you visit .love all the stories and the memories they make it so real. Another brilliant video cheerio till the next one
Thank you for this tour. The Castle has a lot of glory to me. During my second phase during military training i was stationed at the Castle as legal officer. A video well done and a lot of detail. Excellent. Next one i am there
Lovely to visit the Castle through your eyes. Very well done! Enjoyed your views. The noon gun has an interesting connection with the Observatory
What a wonderful comprehensive tour of the Castle. Last time I visited there was when my Mom took us for a tour in 1967. Do the viewers know that the Cape Castle of Good Hope is where South Africa's famous Castle Lager is brewed !!😂 Did not see Curtis sipping a nice cold Castle Lager at the restaurant.🍺Fortunately we did not see the plakkers on the way in to the castle.
Thank heavens Castle Lager isn't brewed there! 😁 I don't recall seeing any alcohol on the menu, but I was in the market for large volumes of hydration that day, so Powerade did the job! I may have had a cold one or three that evening though! 🍻
You must someday have a closer look at the statues of Jan van Riebeeck and his wife Maria de la Queillerie. She was not always next to her husband. I was working in the Paul Sauer building next to the station when they lifted Maria's statue from where it was previously, and "married" the two on the circle in Adderley Street. It was quite a great event and we could watch it from the fifth floor. It was somewhere in 1969.
You guys are so sweet & amazing! Thank you 💕
Thank you for a great episode. I loved it. There is so much history there, so interesting. I was so amazed ro hear that the sea was closer to the castle then. Wow!
Hi you two! This tour really fascinated me with all the historic facts of 300 years woven into it. With a hall and table so huge it is no wonder that the installation of toilets receives attention on several of the information plates. I've never been to the Castle and did not realise how large and intricate it is, until I saw this wonderful video of yours. Thank you so much for all the effort you both put in. Until next time!
Keep safe!
So interesting - wow
Wow what an experience to visit the Castle again sins my primary school years. Thanks you two😊😊
On top of Table Mountain is a dam. There is a building close to the dam. It is a museum. Inside the museum you will find a train with a steam engine that was used during the building of the Cable Car. There is a road that will take you to the museum. Greetings.
Is it truth?
@@olenaminnie436 yep. It is not a full size engine but a smaller version for transporting material during the construction of the cable car. It is also supported by foto"s so you can see how it was used. I visited the place with nature conservation with the purpose to train there officers in the matters of law.
@@johannesweitz8497 Ok. Thank you for answer 💖
Great tour. Thank you. I visited the Castle last in 2001 and I'm happy to see that, 23 years later, the level of upkeep has been maintained.
My father was part of the restoration in the late 1980s roger carl scholtz and its was corroded all around but as an educational course to prove themselves they've restored to up to 1991 and the lions as you all enter amazing ! At the time my fathers boss was g.v. fagan whos father was the mayor of cpt during hendrik verwoerds time was part of that project which as a youngster from the cape flats im surely atleat proud of !!!
Was eenkeer in my leeftyd by die Kasteel. Besef nou eers hoe Groot dit is. Indrukwekkend.!!!
Beautiful Place ❤ Love , From Ohio .
This was a magnificent tour - thank you so much! No jumping around between scenes, so one really gets a sense of the flow of the rooms and scenery etc. And the places I've never seen before - like the kitchen, office and well! Incredible.
I visited the Castle in 1988 and remember the tour guide saying that lady Barnard, I think her name was Elizabeth, swam in the swimming pool on a daily basis. You mentioned a pool. In one of the solitary confinement cells you can also see the bath they used for the prisoners. Apparently they all bathed in the same, shallow, about 30 cm of water. You can see the low, brick wall of the bath. It's just a rectangular shape built by bricks.
Hi you two!!! Thank you so much for your posting of this video. I find it very interesting indeed. May you be blessed with many more years of bringing us your outstanding videos... Stay safe and God bless.
From Muizenberg Capetown.. ❤❤😅😅
Another great video tour of a fascinating place. Many thanks and greetings from Texas.
Thank you for your videos ever since I was like 10 years old I always wanted to know what the story is behind that anchor as when we were there back in the day the castle was closed, so I never got to see it in person. Still on my bucket list
Really enjoyed the video through your eyes. Thank you.
I came here with my family when i was 9 back in 2015. The place was undergoing renovations so our tour was very limited. Despite this, our tour guide made the tour one i will never forget! When they shot the cannon he said “sadly this is a smaller cannon without a cannonball. We dont want a repeat of last time!” Its not as funny now that i type this, but boy oh boy did i love that joke
My son and I just did an assignment on the castle. We're planning to go on holiday and we're making it a historical trip to the Cape. He is very excited. I want him to know the entire history of this country. Not what they are taught in school. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
AMA ZING ZING loved it.
My kinders is ook oppad na New Zeeland. Ons bid v julle almal daar. Lief julle
Hi. Loved this episode, thank you. Im not complaining now, I just noticed that this episode had mor adds in than any other of the episodes. I know you have no control over that. But you tube sertanly knows how to use a good episode. You 2 really make my day when I see there's another episode to be watched. It's crazy....😂
Thank you very much for all the videos you put out there. Bakgat. I’m on the other side of side of the World and love the videos you produce. Keep it up you ous.
One of my ancestors (mother's side paternal line) came from Germany and worked as a stone mason on/in the castle
Well you have seen quite a lot more than what I have seen last time I was there.
"TODAY YOUR BLESSED🙏 "CASTLE OF GOOD HOPE CAPE 🌍TOWN" TOUR, REALY BLESSED 🙏MY LIFE, SINCE MY BLESSED FATHER WAS WORKING AS A "SOLDIER💂AND A CHEF"🍲🥩🍖 BEFORE HE PASSED AWAY WHILE I WAS ONLY 2-YEARS OLD, AND TODAY IM 44-YEARS OLD ALREADY AND NEVER EVEN CAME TO VISIT, IT'S REALY A HUGH BLESSING TO VISIT THE CASTLE 🏰 TROUGH YOUR EYES😍."!!
There’s actually some remains of the first fort that was made out of wood and mud in the golden acre enclosed by glass.
💜 The Castle is a STAR FORT.
Part of the Old World, called Tartaria. There are hundreds of Star Forts, world wide. Fascinating subject. Look it up. 🙏💜🇿🇦
Nope, no need to look it up. I've read and heard about Tartaria before and it's not part of our belief system in any way. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. 🏤
Really nice to see the Castle. And I'm literally wondering how it was moved from the coast to the city,.
The castle wasn't moved the coastal line was "moved" by reclaiming land (there are different methods). Same way the Dutch did it in the Netherlands, I suppose.
I always wondered what happened to the coastline from Strand Street in those days to where it is now. Someone said the sea will one day claim back its land. I hope not.
if eating table so big how many in kithen and staff biger then hotel in old daes
I can only imagine how many kitchen and serving staff there must've been! That is one long and fancy banquet table! 😁🍽
That much is plain to see. 🤷🏻♂️ We weren't there for the outside, that's why we just drove around it. The inside is what we were very keen to see and it's well worth a visit. 👌🏻🏰 Visiting hours are from 9:00 to 16:00 and parking is safe. We never felt unsafe during our visit.
old daes grass on roof is camovlage or
Nope, you're on your own with that one! 😨
Very good to see the castle is freely accessible again! When we drove past it last year, there were squatters around it! Last time I was there was in 2004. Hope to make it again this year! I'm just curious, as it opens at 9, how come you guys arrived at 7? Does one have to get there that early to avoid traffic from Strand/Somerset West?
It was fantastic to explore the Castle and to witness first-hand centuries-old history. 🏰 Inbound traffic from our area is an absolute nightmare and starts very early on weekdays, so if we didn't leave Strand @ 5:30, we would've been stuck for much longer! 🚙🛣️
africa time sun shift but good clock
Didn't you got uneasy feeling while in the Lady Ann haul? I could walk through like you. That place is apparently haunted
No, I was totally comfortable. I experienced no uneasiness whatsoever. Luckily so. 😨
With the 1795 "Boer rebellion" in Graaff Reinet the Dutch autorities locked up a few men in the castle, Adriaan van Jaarsveld, Godlieb Opperman, Cornelis Faber, Liebenberg, Henning and my b7c2d2 grandfather Pieter Brits, b 1762.......luckely for them the Brittons took over the Cape of Good Hope. The new interrim goverment set them free
Saved bij the British, your grandfather certainly has an appropriate surname, as Brits is British in Dutch!
You didn’t visit the pharmacy inside the castle…
Crying for justice can be the hospital a lot of elevators will be in the location
We were visitors to the Castle of Good Hope just like everyone else. 🏫 If you have any proposals regarding the Castle, you should approach the management directly. We are unable to be of assistance.
thats no spur
Glad you did not "do" the guided tour!!
One stands and listens to the guide for so long, and see nothing....and then he rushes you through all the places in a few minutes!!👎👎
All the places are explained on big boards in any case!!Thanks for your explanation of every thing!
Have not been for years!!❤❤❤
The CEO of Nike sneaker some people don't know what happened in his home everyone said the USA government did it they is jealous of him
I'm not sure what this has to do with the Castle, but OK. 🤷🏻♂️
Why is your wife not on the video's
Sonia isn't keen on being filmed. I'll respect that until she hopefully changes her mind one day. 🥰
There is no castle it no a scouter canmp and rubledump
You need glasses! 🤨 There is a stunning Castle and we chose to focus on it and not any negatives. That's our vibe around here, just so you know.
In the middle of the courtyard two floor apartments then another two floor apartment on top The land will be for All Presidents in AFRICA INCLUDING DUVAL Live give up big house everything will be in this location the restaurant grocery store and doctor's office to much open spaces use it big house it's not usable anymore for older people young people to it is out of style

The castle is a disgrace now. ..look at your footage, it looks like a refugee camp and the homeless people are washing in the moat.
Try not to get mugged.
We didn't visit The Castle to complain about things. Your comment pertains to a few seconds of footage as if the rest of our video doesn't exist. The Castle is everything but a disgrace, it's a well-maintained and cared-for structure which contains a huge amount of very well-preserved history. It's not the fault of The Castle or its employees that Transnet doesn't resolve the situation with the homeless who has made their wedge of land their home. 🤷🏻♂️ Oh, and we're safe and sound and didn't get mugged. We parked in the dedicated parking area and never felt unsafe, not even for a second.
Absoluut disgrace the neglect that is going on no more restoration going on will never visit again
We thought it was in great shape, especially compared to countless other historical buildings we've seen throughout the country. We'll definitely visit again. It's not considered the best-preserved example of 17th century architecture in the entire world for no reason! 🏰👍🏻
You read all the information boards but when you came by the one of Haroon ( imaam Haroon) you only read only what you want to read. So typical 👎
If your veiled accusation is even vaguely accurate, I would've excluded that section from our video altogether. I find it so incredible (note I don't use a disrespectful and condescending term like 'typical') that you would choose to comment on this one instance when you have never commented before on us including many Muslim references in some of our previous videos. 🤷🏻♂️
Disgusting how the ANC Gov received all State entities in absolute perfect order, on a platter, and how they neglect it all, a perthetic shame on them😡
I don't engage in any political discussions on our channel and I never will. I think the staff are doing a sterling job at the Castle and it's in fantastic shape, compared to many of the much younger historical buildings we've seen on our travels. We chose to focus on that during our visit to and in our video of the Castle. 👌🏻🏰
