    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  10 месяцев назад

      Hey Jeff, this can be a tough one to answer, as I'm not sure just how complex your edits are. Also, how many projects are you working on at once? Some of my viewers have mentioned having multiple jobs going on simultaneously, and depending on the complexity of each, you might end up needing the M3 with some extra memory, which would be an additional cost for either of these devices.
      Even without having this information, if it were me, I would go with the newer machine at this point. We are probably not all that far off from the M4, and I wouldn't want to be three generations behind. That's just three fewer years of longevity - and at what price? I would gladly pay the extra cost for the new M3 to get several more years of life out of it.
      That's just my logic at the end of the day, Jeff! I hope that helps in some kind of way. Feel free to ask any follow-up questions you may have!

      Hey Pal, thanks for stopping by! I can't answer this one as accurately as I'd like; the reason is that I have a very brightly lit house. However, in the office area you see in the video, there is no direct light hitting the display. I don't think it's a matter of general room brightness you need to worry about; rather, will there be a direct lighting source behind the screen, such as a lamp or a window directly behind the display? If not, I think you are in the clear, as this display is capable of showing a very bright image, which wouldn't be easily washed out by a room with bright lighting. Hope that helps at all, Pal! If you do end up going with this computer, as long as you can find an appropriate place to put it, I think you're going to absolutely love it! It is the perfect family computer! How would it work using a VM running Linux with 8GB?

    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  Год назад

      Running a VM on an M1 iMac with 8GB for Linux should work well for many tasks. The M1's architecture supports virtualization, and 8GB is generally sufficient for lightweight Linux VMs. Just ensure your hypervisor software is compatible with the M1 architecture, as some may be optimized for Intel-based Macs. As far as the M3 is concerned, I have not seen this personally but I would imagine it works well, unless of course nobody has optimised for this yet. Hope this helps, Mendo!!

      Hi cryptomon! The truth is, the m1 would totally suffice for the most people, especially those who are not doing any sort of media creation. On the other hand, I have a hard time recommending a computer that is several years old due to the fact that it will likely need to be replaced sooner than if you were to purchase the latest version. Hello, Recardo- Thanks for stopping by!!
      Given your usage - reading, writing, light 3D stuff, Excel, and PowerPoint - I'd lean towards the M3 iMac. The extra 300 euros might seem a bit much initially, but it gets you the latest Apple Silicon, potentially adding a couple more years to its shelf life. Think of it as an investment for smoother sailing for those later years of its lifespan. Hope this helps, Recardo!

      In your daily use, have you noticed many differences in performance between these models?

    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  9 месяцев назад

      You’re not bothering me at all, Ricardo! I don’t think that there would be a huge difference in performance for the majority of the tasks you mentioned, but as far as the 3d rendering goes- I would imagine the stronger GPU cores would definitely make a difference there. I don’t personally do this type of work, but generally speaking, this type of task benefits from stronger GPU performance, so for this, M3 is the right chip. And Once again, the additional lifespan is definitely worth the extra cash in my opinion.

    In 2024 is it worth getting an M1 vs M3 At a discount?

    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hey Alfredo! Choosing between the M1 iMac and the M3 iMac with a discount depends on your specific needs and budget. As of today, the M1 iMac is a solid choice for most users. It offers great performance for everyday tasks like web browsing, email, streaming, and even light to moderate creative work.
      However, if you can get a good deal on the M3 iMac, it might be worth considering if you need a bit more power for demanding tasks like video editing or running multiple intensive applications simultaneously. The M3 processor could provide a performance boost compared to the M1, especially for those kinds of tasks.
      Ultimately, assess your usage patterns and what you prioritize in a computer. If budget is a major concern and the M1 iMac meets your needs, it's a fantastic option. But if you can snag a discounted M3 iMac and you require that extra horsepower, it could be a worthwhile investment. Evaluate your options based on your specific requirements and go with what aligns best with your priorities!

    Would 16 (or 24, in the case of the M3 chip) make a big difference in performance (for example, the "Tomb Raider" resolution and frame rate?)

    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  11 месяцев назад

      To be completely fair, the Tomb Raider benchmark wasn't the best way to test the gaming performance of these chips, as it is in no way optimized for Apple silicon. There were a handful of games I could have tested, but that would have required me to spend even more money on this video. To be honest, I just couldn't afford to. 🤣
      With all that said, I think it would be fairly safe to assume that under the same test method but with additional memory, there would certainly have been some improvement. How much... I have no idea. But given the fact that the Tomb Raider benchmark failed initially due to a lack of memory, adding some additional would certainly fix that problem.
      I think next time around, I will order three of these with different memory configurations and do some more thorough testing of those differences. Maybe by then, there will be quite a few more games optimized for these M series processors.
      Thanks for stopping by and raising this question, Craig. I think this will be a great topic to tackle and test in another video! Take care ✌🏼🤟🏼

    I currently have the M1 iMac and use it for Blender. I definitely should've spec it out more tho because it runs out of graphic memory when doing intensive renderings. I am currently debating on switching to the M3 or waiting for the announcement of an M4 iMac. I have also heard that they may bring back the iMac Pro space gray with the new Apple Silicon chips, so until then I think I am going to keep my M1 because I would hate to upgrade then have a new version come out right after.

    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  9 месяцев назад

      I totally hear you on this, Kodi. That’s always the issue with upgrade cycles when it comes to Mac - they tend to be a little less predictable than iPhones or iPads, which follow those yearly refresh patterns. I think you are 100% correct about there being another iMac variation. Whether it’s a “pro” or perhaps just a larger display with the option of a Pro/Max chip, that would still be worth waiting for, especially considering the type of work you do. But of course, then there’s the problem of there being no confirmation of this and how long you are able to wait. Have you ever considered getting a studio? The reason I ask this is, I’m guessing if they do come out with a Pro iMac, it’ll be quite expensive similarly to the previous version. And if that is the case, you could easily get the 27-inch studio display, accompanied with the Mac Studio which I believe has a Max chip in a $2000 configuration. That puts you out about 3500 bucks all in, and that’s a pretty darn solid setup! I don’t know, maybe something worth considering if you don’t have the ability to wait for too much longer on your upgrade, especially if it’s getting in the way of your productivity with work.
      Anyway, just kind of throwing some thoughts out there. Hopefully at least something in there was helpful lol.

      There are certainly features that make the Magic Mouse (MM) stand out from the pack. The scrolling and swiping take full advantage of the Mac UI, something I wish I had with this MX Master. In retrospect, I should have added more context to my statement; I don't like the Magic Mouse specifically for video editing, which requires an abnormal amount of mouse interactions compared to most other work-related tasks. Sure, it's easy enough to click around for simple things, but when using it in a program like Final Cut Pro and cutting through a ton of footage, it can be quite fatiguing to use. For day-to-day tasks, I could have used it, no problem! The charging on the other hand- just a really derpy design! LOL

      No, you are correct the current Apple magic mouse has issues and, is only used by me when, I need certain functions. Started using Apple All-in-One desktop computers for my home system in the late 1990's so, I prefer a "one-button" mouse. My primary mouse is the old "one-button" optical Pro mouse (own several in both the color black and the color white). However, the magic Track Pad is great and a lot of fun to use (smile...smile).

    To achieve the speed, I read the M3 iMac needs the 512gb configuration, not the M3 iMac 256gb storage, something about second chip with the larger 512gb drive. I'm not talking about 8 vs 16 memory, it's about how Apple built the 512gb storage. Sorry I don't have better recall, it's worth checking out.

      @@NigelWorkman One thing that does interest me is the two- vs three-lens camera systems. When an iPhones takes photos, does Apple insist that one particular lens be selected, or does the system take separate images using each of the lenses, to then combine them with some computation magic ? I know Apple does this in Portrait mode, but in general are images a product of single lenses or a combination of multiple lenses ? If the latter is true, then the Pro models could probably be worth the extra cost for me.

      Hey, I get what you're saying about the mouse - smooth operation but a tad small for the mitts. Front-loading that recharge plug does make a lot of sense, too.
      Now, diving into the tech stuff. Editing on FCP with 24GB RAM, that's some serious horsepower, especially when those browsers are acting up on that M1. I personally have been using the 16GB M2 Pro Mac Mini for my editing, and it has been working great! If you expect to have this machine for several years, getting a higher spec is always a good idea just to make sure you can keep up with software demands as they inevitably increase. I tend to update these things pretty frequently, so I can usually get away with the base model for a year or two. I actually love the Magic Mouse for everything except gaming, the multi directional scrolling is great, the default single button mode forces developers to consider their MacOS menu configurations thoroughly, contextual clicks are easy enough to activate in software, it still looks so modern it could have been designed last week and the first version this style came out 14 years ago, the mouse fits comfortably under the fingers, it’s not supposed to go in the palm of the hand, the charging port on the bottom is a great way to prevent people leaving a wireless mouse wired at all times, and you know if you let them people will just leave it plugged in, it’s a wireless mouse so Apple make you use it wirelessly, the battery lasts a long time so it’s no biggie
    The only struggle I find with the Magic Mouse is gaming, the touch based right-click never gives me grief while using the system normally, but during frantic gaming it’s easy to get the touch based clicks wrong, certainly not a gaming mouse

    Thank you, for this nice comparison review between the 2021, M-1 24-inch IMac and the new 2013, M-3 24-inch iMac. I agree with your comments no need to upgrade unless, you are coming from an older Intel model iMac then by all means skip over the M-1 version and buy one of the new M-3 iMac models. In addition, if you made an error with the specifications on your M-1 iMac (i.e. you now want more ports, more RAM, or a larger SSD) then, yes picking-up a new M-3 imac might make since (smile...smile).

    On the one hand, I have a growing feeling that Apple's Silicon chip is amazing when it comes to iPhones and laptops but seems to be less efficient when applied to Desktops, on the other I'm shocked to notice the short delays between the evolution of the 'M' series for non-upgradable computers. Apple's strategy consists in attracting its community by dangling the carrot of cheaper computers at first glance, but only savvy consumers quickly realize the real cost of the iMacs and the Incurred risk of a potential M 4 launched on the market a couple of months after. Sometime I wonder wether a large majority is endocrinated....

    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  5 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! It's great to hear different perspectives on Apple's Silicon chips and their application across various devices.
      You bring up an interesting point about the efficiency of the M series in desktops and Apple's strategy with frequent updates. I understand your concern about Apple's approach, which can make users feel the need to constantly upgrade to the latest model to stay current. It does seem like the rapid release cycle plays on the desire to have the newest device, even if the practical differences may not justify the upgrade for everyone.
      Your insights into the potential cost implications and the feeling of being "endocrinated" by the frequent updates are certainly thought-provoking. It's important for consumers to stay informed and make decisions based on their actual needs rather than marketing trends.
      Again, thank you for watching the video, Paul and I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Your perspective adds valuable depth to the discussion!

    I definitely love Apple's Magic Mouse & choose it over all other mice. The only thing I like more is the Magic Trackpad. Note that one cannot handle the Magic Mouse the same way they handle conventional mice. Conventional mice are designed to rest under the palm - the Magic Mouse is designed to be managed with our finger tips - held with our thumbs and our pinky and ring fingers and all the touch features manipulated with our middle and index fingers. Once you figure this out and stop trying to force it to work like conventional mice its power and functionality and form of function can be unlocked.

Although there are certainly a small demographic of folks that would benefit from starting off with M3- Creators for example. Much of the programming we use is still perfectly usable with M1, but Over the next 2-3 years I bet it will start to show its age. It is always my recommendation for a new buyer to start out with the newest model, if they are someone who like to use it for 4/5+ years especially.

      Apple is apperently making iMac "iMac again" like it was in 1998. That was not a pro desktop computer.
      If you're a pro/power user and need a desktop Mac then you got these options now:
      Mac Mini "Pro" (M2 Pro)
      Mac Studio
      Mac Pro
      And yes, if you already got iMac M1, keep it for 2-3 more years! If you got something really old, go for iMac M3! :)

    • @NigelWorkman
      @NigelWorkman  Год назад

      True words, CJ- I agree with all of this! I have been using a M2 pro mac mini for most of my editing work, but as these videos get more complex and I use higher bitrate 4k, I will likely end up needing a M3 max Studio when it arrives. This little mini has exceeded my expectations bigtime, but with my desktop, I think i just want something with insane power that I might actually keep for a little bit, ya know? Not sure how soon that refresh is coming, but thats what I have my sights on for now. Mac pro- ya that would be super dope to have, but i'm not sure if ill EVER have money for such a beast! LOL!!

      The "problem" about iMac is that iMac Pro 27" in 2017. The short-term solution for the Trashcan failure. Something for pros while waiting for Mac Pro 2019.
      Now many users want that iMac 27" back. Even the consumer 27". "Semi pros" prefer iMac 27".
      But now we have a 27" display that you can use with your first Mac Studio plus the second one. That is cheaper that two iMac Pro 27".
      Mac Studio base model + 27" is cheaper than iMac Pro 27" was, even if you add Apple's keyboard and a simple logitech mouse. It's not all in one, it's a little bit more cables but you can live with that. It's a WORK TOOL :)
      I'm waiting for Mac Studio M3 Max. Got a Mac Pro Xeon (not trashcan / 2019). Time for a new Mac! I don't wanna go for M2, I want M3. M3 Max binned got 36 GB RAM and M3 Max Std got 48 GB RAM (and more CPU cores). It's pretty affordable compared to Mac Pro M2. Mac Pro is too expensive.
      The problem with Mac Studio is that it got no internal slots for more storage. I want 2 TB internal storage or more. I don't like that additional storage MUST be external. I wanna have the options. Mac Studio is not perfect. The good old 2500 dollar Mac Pro Xeon was so much better than Mac Studio, but now these machines are too old and Mac Studio is at least the best option. That huge heat sink and the good fan will make the Max chip work fine.
      But when will Mac Studio M3 come? I know it will be hand in hand with Mac Pro M3 because of the Ultra chip.
      But Apple can theoretically do this: only M3 Max in Mac Studio and only M3 Ultra in Mac Pro. Not sure if Apple will do that. But why not? Why would you buy Mac Pro when you can save 3000 dollar by buying Mac Studio instead? Mac Pro will sell much more if the Ultra chip is an exclusive thing.

With that said, I tried to make it clear that this testing I did NOT represent the potential gaines one would see from M3 on optimized software. In any case, I appreciate your honesty and It will only help me to improve the way I go about doing things in the future, so THANK YOU!

    I'm loving my new iMac/ 24Gb Ram, / 1T ssd storage, M3 chip, (I needed it; my older 27-inch iMac bit the dust) -- FWIW I agree with Nigel's opinion about the Magic Mouse' I didn't purchase that option, I just got the trackpad, which is wonderful to have. - FWIW I got a cool new Mouse at _________________. Best computer purchase I've made since 'The Dawn of the Consumer Computer Age,' (which I was at). -- Beautiful screen too - PHOTOSHOP and occasionaly video is my main usage; since my older Intel could handly most of the hobby & work I do I had no doubt the M3 could handle it as well, even better I figure. -- It is way better/ smooth/ fast esp. on common task I do of checking out EFFECTS on photos (use on1 plugin). Effects appear INSTANTLY, no waiting a second or two or more to see what the photo looks like...in general, get new when old no longer does what you want to do (what you actually do with your computer...not dreams of composing your next musical masterpiece in Starbucks, doing video hanging off the rim of the Grand Canyon, impress you co-workers and friends with your Browsing and Search skills, etc. -- Have fun -- [Note: PS- and if I need more power or features, I get 'em, or add them on. (like difinetely need Thunderbolt 4 dock or hub...(and the better mouse is nice). Have fun. Enjoy...Einstein would pay $$$ Millions for a computer like this. $$$ Millions! - So we can enjoy and profit from what we now have; it's cool progress.

      You make a lot of great points here my friend! I especially like the einstein perspective- I can't even imagine what he would have come up with having access to such a machine back in his day...The spec you bough no less!! That sucker is a beast! Which mouse did you go with? I bought the Logitec MX master S3 and I absolutely LOVE it!! The way it automatically remaps the keys in certain programs- final cut specifically- really make my editing much more efficient and just more fun. besides all that, I'm sure you will have many many amazing years with your new machine and will create some amazing photographs!
      Take care, Citizen and thanks so much for taking the time to leave your thoughts for all of us to read and enjoy!

      Hey Backslash, you definitely have one of my favorite answers, but to be fair, I asked for someone to CONVINCE me of why they like it, and for that reason, I have gone with someone else. BUT…I liked you answer so much that I have decided to create a last minute runner up prize and YOU my friend are that winner!!! 🏆
      Please let me know how I can reach you (email) to send over the prize!
      I’ve never done this before, so I’m not quite sure of a Safeway of doing this in order to make sure everyone’s data is protected. Let me know if you have any ideas!!
