I am in California as well and have gone thru the heatwave not long ago which has done a number on my pool. Have the staining, so will use the yellow treat soon with chlorine shock and hope that does the job- thank you for the advice! 👍
With yellow algae you have to kill it chemically first to get rid of the stains that will soon disappear. Also can use as Pool RX cartridge to help with algae growth, I have had good results with those. If stains remain after a couple of weeks, those are probably discolorations in the plaster.
The walls of my pool look just like this but it’s very hard to scrub off. If I use a wire brush I can get it off so I don’t think it’s staining. What could it be?
Hello. Thank you for posting this video. My pool looks exactly like this. Just a tad bit worse. This past summer we were busy remodeling home and wasn’t fully on top of my pool. I was using cheap Home Depot chlorine and wasn’t balancing water properly. I got a bad case of yellow algae several times. I would shock it and it would go away. Finally towards end of summer I shocked it again and killed off yellow algae but stain didn’t go away. I even bought an expensive phosphate remover chemical, thinking I had a high level of phosphates. Haven’t been able to fully remove stains and they look horrible. Any recommendations or stain removers? I have a in ground pool with plaster and about 25000 gallons here in California as well. Thank you for your video once again
Great! Glad the video is helpful. Stains are a tough beast sometimes. Depending on what caused them they can be a real pain to remove from plaster. There are various stain removal materials to try to remove them, but it will take trial and error to see if it can actually be removed. Jack's Magic makes a stain test kit that may be helpful to try to identify if something they make will remove the stain. I don't recommend non-drain acid wash stain removal additives, I've really only seen this work on iron stains. You can also get acid treatment devices or a stain tool that fits on the end of a pole to dispense acid directly onto a localized spot, so for small stains this would work, on large areas not so well.
@@truelightpoolsllc4441 hello I can not find much about lightly tinted greenish yellow water except in reference to mustard algae. But I emptied pool before winter of course rain water got in but I shop vaced it all out used chlorine in tiny bit of water in pool scrubbed the whole pool shop vacced it all out again. Refilled pool, got everything hooked up adjusted ph alkalinity after I added the calcium hardness as we have very soft water. Pump had been running 8 or more hours and it's not that hot yet but after water was put in pool about 3 days later it is tinted, if I fill a large cup with the pool water it's clear as can be, i believe first shock I added was before the tint color started but now have shocked again added a clarifier aqua pill. Iv backwashed rinsed and repeat iv brushed n brushed. Nothing is on bottom like when normally if you brush it will disturb it into a cloud through the water. I can not understand what the color is from vacuum bottom also. This is third year of pool never an issue before, is it still an algae just through out all the water or what!!!?? My chlorine is 10 or more!!

Hello - I'm about to give up on my pool :( First time pool owner here and have had this pool for exactly 1 day shy of a month lol I can't tell if its yellow algae or stains. There is one little corner of my kidney pool that gets a lot of shade and thats where I first noticed the yellow on the wall. I used the pool brush with white bristles...and it did absolutely nothing to the yellow, but I put my hand in and wiped at the wall and it came right off. There are lots of other places on my pool walls that look exactly like whats in this video, but again...using that white bristle brush doesn't move it at all. I have a 20,000 gallon plaster pool, no salt water thing that I've been reading a lot about. I went down to my local pool store and they gave me Yellow Out and advised that I shock my pool with 2 lbs of Powder Powder Plus every 12 hours a total of 3 times then use Clear Aid. I did the Yellow Out and pool shock and noticed that some areas where the yellow was a dark little circle has disappeared after the treatment, but the rest of my walls still look just like it does in this video at 1:47. If the white bristle brush didn't move the yellow at all, but my hand did...should I get a algae brush and try the areas again? If the algae brush doesn't move it all, would it be safe to assume that it's staining and not algae? Thank you! Also, I live in Las Vegas where its very hot, not sure if that makes a difference.
I would get a stiffer bristle brush first. But I have seen better results with Yellow Treat, like in my other video, than yellow out algicide. For that size pool I would usually treat it with 8 pounds of chlorine shock and 3 caps of yellow treat after brushing all of the walls and floor. This is a treatment for a pool that has more than 50% of the pool covered in the yellow algae. Balance pH first of course to 7.2 to 7.4. Let pump circulate all day and night. Check chemicals the next day and see how much the yellow algae remains, you may need another treatment of the yellow treat. Not all of the yellow algae will be brushed away, some will only be removed with chemical treatments. Those that remain after the chemical treatments are probably just stains.
When the yellow showed up last year on my vinyl floor, my brother swam under water and scrubbed it away, so I don't think it's staining especially since I'm getting a gritty residue and also some fluffy residue even if I've sucked all of it out to waste two days before. I'm definitely getting some dead algae buildup daily even with clear water; so I can't think of anything else but mustard.
I have never seen the yellow algae give any kind of a gritty residue. Maybe something is coming out of your filter through the returns back into the pool like DE if you have a DE filter. Or maybe the plaster is degrading and leaving some cloudy residue and grittiness. I seen these situations plenty.
After watching this video and several others I’m convinced I have stains and not yellow algae. My question is - how do I get rid of the stains?? And where do most stains come from??
There are stain removers that you can purchase to help treat and remove the stains. Even stain test kits to help diagnose what the stain is caused from and what stain remover will work that best. If that stain removers don't work you can always get an acid dispensing tool to put on the end of a pole and dispense acid on the spot to help remove it. This is the harshest treatment for your plaster but will work.

Probably algae if it comes off. You may need to kill the yellow algae chemically.
