    I spent 44 years as a journeyman lineman/line crew foreman. Safety-Safety-Safety. THATS NUMBER ONE! What this video shows is spot on. It’s a brotherhood that you have to work in to totally understand what it means. You watch out for others and they watch out for you. Remember what Reddy Kilowatt said “Remember kids, electricity will kill you!” If it ain’t grounded it ain’t dead! Were there days that seemed insurmountable and would never end? You bet! Hurricanes, tornadoes, wind, heat, snowstorms, ice, thunderstorms, mud slides/rock slides, floods and earthquakes. In your career you will have experienced it all. I wouldn’t trade what I learned and experienced for anything. Looking back there is an old saying, that if you enjoy your job you’ll never work a day in your life. I feel blessed to have worked with the best line hands possible and make some lifelong friendships. Prayers go out to you all!

Some times you feel it's thankless , but there is always someone who comes up and says Thankyou ! I have lost some real friends/ buddies in the 39 years . good question. wouldn't be a subject likely to get much media attention. interestingly the Utlities like to operate underground, and as Russ Baker put it in a Copan book talk, the more he investigated things the more he realized that " we don't know much about how anything works."

    I was a telephone lineman for ten years. I have eaten lunch sitting on top of a pole. I have used my line hammer to beat ice off of a pole so I could hold on to it. I worked in the hot and the cold.
    I can't overemphasize the respect I have for power linemen. They worked in worse weather and more dangerous conditions and I had friends who died but I did not envy the dangerous and difficult conditions that power linemen worked in. Just so we could have lights and other comforts.

    When we were hit by the massive hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico there is no description to tell people what we went through. We waited months for our electricity to be restored. I still remember the day 6 months later when linemen were at our door. They were there to restore our electricity and not only did they restore our electricity but they restored a respect in us for linemen all over the world. @@magicman_metal_fab Hauppauge. I tramped through Long Island. 1987 there was a small contractor in need of lineman, Commander Electric was so glad to have me on board, they cut the overtime hours. So me and everyone else went to Local 42 in Connecticut, and left the contractor holding a bag full of pissed off apprentices that aren't allowed to drag up.
      I spent 40 years in the tools. The last 14 was with The City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. LADWP was and still is, the most badass place. They do tons of hot work. Glad I lived through it.
      LILCO lineman are mere hydraulic ice cream cones standing next to the men who climb. They gave me two bucket trucks in Long Island just for our contractor crew. The 5 line crews in the West Los Angeles DWP yard were lucky to have 2 buckets that were operational on any given day!
      Most of the powerlines in LA are in a back yard, and there is no bucket access in the first place. I wore off the rust on my hooks fast, and the first three days was building 34.5 KV circuits on 75 foot poles. I was soft at the time, at 46 years old, having to start climbing every day thought it was gonna kill me.
      By the grace of God I lived through all that, and retirement is sweet!
      Be careful out there men.

    There have been multiple assessments done that say, if the grid went down in the US, 90% of the population would die in 3 to 4 months. The lineman trade will always be lineMAN, I constantly say this to feminists, men do the hard, dangerous, and seriously dirty work, everything that makes society work, requires men. Yes, you might find an outlier woman, "working" on a road crew, but she's usually flagging traffic or occasionally running a piece of equipment. The same with fire fighting, there are women with the title, but they cannot do ALL the things men can do.
    I hold lineman in the absolute highest regard, they are the bravest men doing what no one else will do and frankly can do. THANK YOU LINEMEN!

    You guys get paid a lot and don’t do much work. Mostly waiting around getting paid, with a whole lot of grounds men. Spoiled, and most of your leads you work with are aluminum. Which is very light in weight and easy to work with.

    Why use the wood pole ?

    • @nwafishing9524
      @nwafishing9524 6 лет назад

      Keo Sela Wooden poles have lower transportation and storage costs. When stacked properly, wooden poles need less than half the storage space of steel or concrete poles. Wood also withstands handling and surface damage well. On the other hand the galvanized coating of a steel pole is very thin and can be easy damaged. Concrete poles don’t bear hits or handling well either.
      Wooden poles don’t need any special packaging for transportation. Wood is light and tough, which means that it is easy to haul through different terrains.
