"Us mere mortals" says the god of tool reviews! Nice one Peter.
😂🙌👍
Nice bit of jiggery pokery there bud. Actually not the first i've seen to combine shelf pin holes and dowelling for carcases but a pretty good one by the looks of it. Don't suppose they had the foresight to space the locating pins multiples of 32mm apart? Was thinking if they did, working on an MFT like you do, you could drop the pins through the bench holes if they're too long so they're not in the way.
Cheers Stew. Yes, the locating pins are still on the ‘system32’ so that would work. I’d still prefer them to just supply shorter pins though. 🤷♂️👍
Hay Peter. I have the Bosch ‘holy rail’. You can buy the router sled and rails separately. I have the 1600mm rail and use a DeWalt 625 on the sled. Works okay. It does not look as easy to use for 32mm spacing as the Festool as it does not have the same leaver mechanism to lift the locating pin. Certainly saved buying a Festool router and I like the Bosch track saw a lot
Cheers Doug. Yes, you can - but the rail & carriage bundle only covers the 800 I think. 👍👍
@@danielegger6460 No, it's also available in 1600mm and rails can be joined to have longer len (like 2400). There are another issue with jig: you need to sharpen pin (a bit) to fix skipping of holes
I like it. Hope they make a smaller one.
Great video. Its nice to see these new small companies pushing there way to the market place. Its how things change and stop prices going completely out of control.
I still like your jig, simple and works as well if not better than some high end tools. Knowledge is the best tool.
New? Small? Sauter is the Platzhirsch for woodworking tools in Germany.
“Marching together to a brighter future” as in a 32mm spaced future…. LOL!
I have been using the Festool 32 mm rail as well as the Mafell system for drilling 32mm spaced holes, using the DD40 Duo Dowel drill. The one from Mafell is impressive wrt the accuracy of the ruler and the DD40 machine (or DDF40). The machining tolerances are impressive to my opinion. But maybe as well part of that brighter future? Well… having a wobble-wobble shelve resting on 3 of the 4 supports, that is too easy to note as a user of the cupboard. And the reduction in time when making the holes, both fast and accurate… if I add “pleasure in my work” to the equation, I feel heading towards another bright future. Bit poorer maybe but smiling.
OMG, Michael Scott and David Brent would have to bite their fist at 0:02 to not throw in a TWSS! Very interesting jig, Peter. Scott
Because it’s going to come from Germany customs duty, vat, shipping company handling charges, first born child tax etc etc may end up being due. Under £135 (I think) and it should be the price you see is what you pay but above that, ie you buy the jig and the dowel upright piece, and you risk getting hammered by everyone. May be worth buying the bits separately?
Just looked at ordering and it appears they take off VAT when you put in GB on the plain jig on it’s own. That means you’re probably going to get a bill from UPS before they deliver…
Would you happen to have a video on creating a Cross Cut Sled?
Only for a tracksaw. It’s part of the tracksaw workshop series, there’s a playlist here - bit.ly/TracksawWorkshop 👍
how does the guidance of the router bit work? Do you use a copy ring?
Outstanding. Seriously thinking about buying it.
Thanks! Great jig if you have the need. 👍👍
That looks like a handy system for cabinet makers as it avoids buying lots of expensive bits and with the doweling jig uses the cheapes ready made joint system.
Looks like it could/should also be used for finger joints or dovetails.
Interesting idea - I’ll take a look thanks. 👍
That was my first thought as well. I think my home made hole jig is my preferred option at this time.
I picked up the Lee Valley shelf pin jig. Two extrusions and two rods. A bit of a pain to store and find the parts when needed. This looks like a better thought out product.
E.g. the pins; I'd swing by the local hardware store and see what is available (or check on line). Hardware can vary in sizes a bit, you may have received ones that were a wee bit on the thick side (assuming no issues with the jig). Cutting the longer pins is probably the way to go but shorter version might be available.
Now if they make a version that works with the Domino I'm in serious trouble! :D
I suspect you could buy a lot of pins before getting the exact fit! 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop take the jig in and test fit 😀
Interesting jig. It may not have the flexibility of the Festool LR32 jig (provided one has a suitable Festool router, or made an adapter plate), but this also means it should be easier to set up while still enabling quality results. It should be way better than the cheaper jigs which rely on a portable drill rather than on a router to drill each hole.
Exactly! 👌👍
I'm about to buy the jig but can't decide between the materials. Multiplex is cheaper but also not as rugged?
Yes; depends how careful you are with it really. The phenolic is really nice, but it's also heavier. 🤷♂️
Wow, that's a pretty comprehensive jig, one question after all the things this can do....👌🏽
can it make a good cup of coffee? 🤔
That chip out of the resin was a bit of a bummer.
Cheers mate.👍🏽
No to the coffee, but yes, but of a bummer. Only cosmetic - doesn’t affect performance - but it shouldn’t happen. 👍
The price of that festool setup is insane. Be cheaper to go the cnc route!
A CNC big enough to do shelf pin holes would cost a fair bit more. 👍
Usually online order you get miniature things… but this time Its the orher way around… but do always check the millimeteres they could be mill millimeter…🤪🤣😂🤣😂👍👍👍👍🤗🇨🇭
Oops, when I built my garage cabinets, I made a simple drilling jig for the shelf pins which worked - but I made up my own spacing as there was no need (or knowledge about) for standardised spacing. Now I know what I should have done - and as they say you learn through making mistakes. Thanks Peter once again.
An organ for wood workers 🤔👍👍👍🤗🇨🇭and now toccata and seam… tat ta ta daaaa
Nice video as always. Interesting product. I hope the manufacturer responded re the chip out and peg length. Thanks for your efforts.
Looks like the cover of a famous album by Judas Priest....
Hi Peter pop along to your local commercial motor factor, and you should be able to purchase short clevis pins of all sizes ( used mainly on air brake chambers)
Can you drill 20mm hinge holes between the 32mm spacing with this? Also what if your workpiece is longer than the jig, I guess you can easily reposition it then?
No.It uses a much smaller guide bush - 14mm, from memory - so no good for that or making your own MFT top.
@@10MinuteWorkshop so if I buy the Sauter guide, is there another small accessory I could buy to drill the bigger hinge holes? Which 32 system do you prefer?
I don’t know I’m sorry. I like the LR32 system from Festool. 👍
Hi Peter. Where did you download the user guide from as i can't find it???
I’ll see if I can dig out a link, but I’m pretty sure I just googled it. 🤷♂️👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop thanks Peter. I asked sauter and they said they didn't do one 🤔???
This seems like a useful jig to get started in 32mm system, i wonder if this could help me drill a more or less accurat mft top.
The two rows of fingers are spaced 96mm apart, but they only take a 17mm guide bush, so ~14mm bit, max. 🤷♂️👍
You could make a set of pilot holes for a forster bit maybe?
@@robadams1456 yes, but in the end it wouldn’t be any more precise as measuring it out
That would take me about 3 years to master & I would go back to the system I know after about a month!!! And you say if your 'new' to cabinetry this could be for you! lol
Are you blaming the tools? ;)
typical germans steel pins instead of plastic
Hello thinking about the shelfpin jig, now I ain't no expert but could you not use UJK parf sticks to do the same job. Sure you can buy these seperat from the UJK mft jig set? Maybe you know of pitfalls for the parff system.
Regards Mick.
Never used the Parf guides, but AFAIK the sticks are on 96mm centres, and while they can be used for 32mm and 48mm it’s not straightforward. Also the holes are only 3mm I believe, so you’d need to double-drill, or find some other way. 🤷♂️👍
Now you tell me! Never did like the smaller 32mm- 1/4" shelf pin jigs. After laying them down once or twice, they always got out of register just a bit for me. Spent all that time buying the necessary Festool, LR32 parts (Rail & Sled) and adapting them to my PC 890. Now they come along with what looks to be the perfect jig to replace the LR32 and the Domino 500 for making cabinets and book shelf's. Looks very much like a counter top corner router trimming jig as well. Not to hard to figure out some of the other uses for that jig just by looking at it. Well done.
Thanks! 👍
Its rather unfortunate that tool manufacturers don't spend a little more time researching the designs of their tools before they prepare to mass market them. The indexing pin length that you point out would certainly annoy me. I really can't imagine why one would want longer indexing pins. It's also a waste of materials to make them too long when everyone will just want to cut them off anyway.
Great video though. I always like your thorough reviews. I know that there are many influencers out there on IG and RUclips doing their best to get us to buy the tools they rep. I appreciate your transparency and seemingly unbiased reviews. You labeled this as a AD video, which I appreciate, but I see it more of a real guy like me trying out a tool. Its easy to see you are not a fanboy, blindly marching to be beat of a tool manufacturers drum. Please don't change your style.
As far as I can tell, the pins are off-the-shelf clevis pins - the fatter they get, the longer they get, it seems. 🤷♂️
Juan jig does plenty!
Regarding your comment about the long pins, Sautershop shows the work piece raised up off the bench on some pucks.
@@10MinuteWorkshop I agree Peter , their setup also seems a bit wobbly.
Excellent review. I have to be honest that I find our reviews more useful than your build series - but that is a result of what I do and how I do it.
"Festool is ruiniously expensive" he says "8 weeks after I buy the LR32 rail, system and router" i says...
LR32 is a great system and I’m not planning on swapping it for this; but if you’re in the market for a 32mm system then this is worth looking at. LR32 is faster to use though, and offers longer rails that are usefully their own right. 👍👍
LOL, thought it was a digital piano when I broke in halfway through the video :-))
😂 It’s about the right size! 👍
I just found out you retired from the business of carpentry and cabinetmaking and turned full-time content creator.
I learned valuable things from you and I wish you all the best in your new endeavour and hope you remain true :)
Nice video, by the way :)
Thank you! I retired from the cabinetry business over a year ago, so I'd hope that if I wasn't 'remaining true' you'd have noticed by now! 😂👍
pinning away for some of your toys.. OH sorry that is pining

Another well another jig :)
They come in threes, like buses… 🤷♂️😂

@@dougsaunders8109 Don't tempt me! 😂
This was a great video and very helpful. thanks!
Thanks Mark. 👍
Hi Pete
Great review and a nice bit of kit
Thanks Carl! 👍
Great jig, more than long enough to do a base cabinet in one go.
Yep, absolutely - but not so long that it feels unwieldy on a smaller cabinet, like the 1400 LR32 rail. 👍👍
Hi. What is a name of the clamps you have used to hold the jig?
I used two types in this vid. Festool lever clamp - amzn.to/2pOohLD (US: amzn.to/2pnFZIM) and
Bessey DuoKlamp - amzn.to/3eDz1Ig (US: amzn.to/3w1s1dM)
HTH! 👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop I should have recognized festool's colour scheme...thank you Peter.
What type of router bit are you using for these type of operations?
I use a spiral upcut bit - same type I used for my DIY loose tenon jig, I should have put a link in the description, thanks for the reminder. 👍 This one - Spiral upcut bit - www.wealdentool.com/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Up_Cut_2_Flute_229.html
@@10MinuteWorkshop Thanks!

‘Oh, we’ve never seen that problem before!’. … Says every company with a problem 😂 (granted, even if it is a small problem).
Thanks for the video. I’ll definitely keep this in mind.
Well, yes, quite. Still, they say they’ve taken steps to resolve the issue, and they were happy for me to post about it, so fair play I think. 🤷♂️👍
I get Festool pricing = quality and I get in business time = money so investment in equipment that makes you more productive is very worthwhile.. but nope I don't get how most would justify £500 for shelf pin drilling, especially in the days of CNC..
