    I love how he straight up says it doesn't matter how you use your right hand; 1, 2, 3 fingers, a pick, etc; more bass players need to be less judgmental like this dude.

      yeah I kinda hated how most bass teachers always and i mean ALWAYS insist that you only used 2 fingers and you must pluck them alternatively.

    what's really cool about Billy is that he is not afraid to admit that he is committing mistakes in the middle of his teaching. this shows how humble this guy is, even though his abilities and musicality is WAY up there. props to you sir!

    • @DS-xk6yr
      @DS-xk6yr 6 лет назад +13

      My guess is his mistakes there are simply from slowing down to show us mortals, and having to relinquish his tactile memory which typically operates at much higher speed. Maybe?

    • @brianjosephmedia1086
      @brianjosephmedia1086 5 лет назад

      That's weird to me it's always been the opposite, when we make mistakes we let people know we know we made a mistake by laughing or smiling or rolling your eyes or squinting your face because you low-key don't wanna let them think "you're so bad you didn't even realize you made a mistake". You want them to know you know. But usually they never realize unless it's incredibly obvious and fucked up.

    I met Billy a few years before this video, it was at NAMM, and he was so great to spend a few minutes chatting, and if I remember correctly, he gave me some strings and swag, and I’ve never forgot it. This few minutes made me choose to stick with 4 string, when seemingly everyone was moving to multiple string bass. He could do almost anything he wanted to musically with 4 strings, I’ve not felt the need for more strings since. Thanks Billy for the inspiration!

    Being a bass player (and starting on bass), when I use a pick on a guitar, I noticed I alternate pick ascending, and economy pick descending. I must have got it from finger playing on a bass because of how you sort of "brush back" with your fingers. after 25+ years, it's very hard to unlearn, but as Billy says (I think I can call him Billy, I don't think he'll mind), maybe if it works I should just go with it.

    I saw Billy play at a celebrity type jam night in Beverly Hills years back. Ray Luzier was on drums and that Bumblefoot guy on guitar. To be honest, the other two played pretty much as I expected them to; flashy and lots of chops, speed etc. Billy, on the other hand, really surprised me with his musicality and melodic approach. Sure, he took an occasional few bars to burn, but overall he was very tasteful and grooving. I was really impressed.

    • @danoeb-g418
      @danoeb-g418 4 года назад +2

      I think you missed the point. He said that he always plays in one direction (ring middle index, ring middle index) instead of in both directions (ring middle index then middle again). If you were to play in both directions your middle finger would hit a string twice as often as the others. But Billy's style of three fingers in one direction means each finger shares the load equally

    Remember to stretch your hand before playing. Billy has a very large palm, larger than the standard size. Therefore, his technique is unique and non-standard. Do not hurt your muscles, and if it doesn’t work out, just take a pick, it’s more rational.

    One question, I noticed he partially scallops his upper frets, why not scallop the whole fret and not just half of it. Anyone know?

    • @roseoris297
      @roseoris297 6 лет назад

      SS Sandman the reason is for bending mate. Bending on lower frets is easy and that's not make any different with scallops or not.
      But bending in high frets is difficult without scallops.

      rose oris yeah I am aware of the purpose of the scalloping. I may not have been clear with the question. But his upper frets are only half scalloped. The E and A strings do not have scallop wood under them. Just the D and G. Seems strange to not scallop the upper frets completely.

      @@spsanders69 I would assume that he doesn't do bends on the E and A strings that high? Just my 2 cents

      @@spsanders69 Billy was concerned about losing too much wood from the neck when he did his first scalloping job on his old P Bass. He wanted to keep as much mass as possible for sustain.
