Apologies in advance that I wasn't able to make as much sense of it as I wanted to, I hope that I at least touched on some of the basic meanings, and as always I kinda count on you guys to help me and anyone else understand this so feel free to share your thoughts/theories!

First, the music video director was concerned that the music video was 'What if the members of New Jeans are still free and creative friends, but their actions are misunderstood by the public and they stop expressing themselves?' He's said that they expressed their concern that their own colors and expressions as artists and humans would lose their light in the music video. "I'll run whenever you call me~ I exist for you" Hani's line may be expressing Siri, but it's a very important line to express Idols. She is expressed as a patient who sings for us, tries for us, and then eventually loses herself and thinks that she is an iPhone (Siri) who has to do anything when she presses the button. Daniel, who is always known to fans for smiling, is always smiling while watching TV with nothing on it, and Hye-in, who was pretending to be pretty for her fans, forgets her situation and thinks she is a princess. So while projecting herself on all princess fairy tales, the steps are twisted, and the prince dies after eating a poisonous apple, and the sleeping princess in the forest dies when a The Revenant bear appears. Hae-rin, who has been hearing that she looks like a cat, is now even thinking she is a cat. In a similar situation, Min-ji misunderstands that she is a doctor even though she is a patient under pressure to take care of her leader role and members.

The music video is a sad black comedy in which all of their actions are distorted, misunderstood, and criticized by the haters and their actions as idols are attacked.
A mental ward is a frame set up by fans, haters, and the public, and they lose themselves there. Daniel said "Did you guys forget who we are?" They blame the members, but they don't remember who they were until the end. Even the haters who write bad comments until the end. It can be seen as a music video with many meanings.

My theory is that this could be a flip side of Ditto. In ditto it’s about the fans making New Jeans so real that she was cutting off her reality...until she finally let them go and chose to focus on her reality. On the side of New Jeans, there is a possibility that when they lose connection with their fans they lose their identity. They start to define themselves according to what the fans see them as or what they want so Hanni sees herself as an iPhone, hyein as the tragic heroin in fairy tales, Minji, the leader is the caretaker...she becomes a doctor in her mind, Haerin who was liked to a cat by Heesoo thinks she is a cat. Only Danielle keeps a connection to their true Reality. The montage of clips from other videos is just a way of showing who they are supposed to be! Love the ending reference to haters that seem to belong to a mental ward! Lol

Love the way you DIVE INTO the MVs! I have a perspective on the Man/Doctor sitting and looking at the NewJeans at the table, then changing identities. I notice that He is where the TEDDY BEAR was sitting. My thinking is that the TEDDY BEAR is him, and is looking at the many people/patients who have sat at the table. The girls could be anyone, in the context of the commentary/critique that this MV is putting out. This WHOLE THING, from MUSIC to MV, is BRILLIANT!

Also hopefully they will capture 2023 as there break out year since it's very fitting to be this year being the year of the rabbit which are the Fandom.

  • @warmthv
    @warmthv Год назад +13

it is plausible to suggest that this masterpiece right here displays how things can really be *internalized* & how most people are *desensitized* to it. i’d like to quote two of the comments i’ve read & also add my own commentary to it:
    • ““i’ll run whenever you call me~ i exist for you,” hanni’s line may be expressing siri, but it’s a very important line to express idols. she is expressed as a *patient* who sings for us, _tries_ for us, and then _eventually_ *loses* herself & thinks that she is an iphone (siri) who has to do _anything_ she’s being told to. an "iphone", basically a metaphor for being a person who has to run & be ‘on’ when the button (app) is pushed.
    • danielle, who is known to fans for always having bubbly personality, is always smiling & laughing [even] while [just] watching tv with _nothing_ on it (she’s so used to her _professionalism_ that it’s almost as if she is still performing & the public eye is there to watch her expressions closely even when no one is there to criticize her. an extremely uncomfortable and unrealistic dilemma to be put in, right?)
    • hyein has a princess syndrome, because while always trying to dress up & be her prettiest self for the fans, she forgets reality and confuses herself with fairytales. (snow white, sleeping beauty, and the revenant references) - this also reminds me of (g)-idle’s ‘nxde’ especially the line “put on my beautiful self” as idols when what actually want is to bare their souls, show their authentic self more even when they get hated for it)
    • haerin - ever since debut, both fans and non-fans have said haerin looks like a cat _so much_ that she actually starts to believe she’s a cat
    • minji is the unofficial leader of the group (there are no positions in nwjns, but a lot of people, and myself included, think she has leadership qualities) and she’s the oldest. so she’s been known to take care of her members very well. hence, her thinking she is a doctor who’s under pressure to take care of her members.” we can also see that in 2:17, she finally decided to check up on her own self too. she needs someone to attend to her needs as well since she is also still young.
when people are constantly telling idols what they should do & how to behave/having such audacity to dictate their lives, it will eventually get _into_ them. there is a chance that they may actually, subconsciously, start _believing them._ (this also reminds me of _the rise of bangtan ep 4_ or also known as the times where namjoon expressed his crisis of how he wrestled with his own thoughts that deals with the society’s opinion about him & idols in general, and how he also came up with the resolution of why would he even tried so hard to categorize & box his identity if he is an idol or an artist, when he can just be _himself_ without confinements). because by projecting things towards these artists & feel the need to tweak almost everything about them can be equal to insisting that they should replace their real selves in order to please us just because we are the source of their income and we are the ones making them relevant; which *ironically* made us become deeply into them and stan them in the first place because there are parts of them that are authentic... that are ‘very human’ which are relatable. and when hanni said, *_“now i am ashamed that i was worried. it doesn’t matter who i am anymore. i exist for you.”_* it’s just heartbreaking. because there are k-pop idols who feel sorry and people even guilt trip them when they are expressing their honest feelings. it’s sad that when they finally choose to share their genuine concerns, the public tends to deem them as ungrateful for all the platform, fame/success, support, and all those other things they have - _as if all these things would immune them from feeling empty or restless_ from doing what they used to be passionate about for a long time. when they are being invalidated, eventually, they may perceive that voicing out their thoughts and emotions are pointless since they are always available for fans, but they rarely get to have someone who will listen to them & hold space for them. (it honestly kinda reminds me of the same dilemma in singularity by taehyung. the lyrics *_“i don’t have a voice,”_* *_“i dumped myself into the lake, i buried my voice for you”_* & *_“have i lost myself or have i gained you”_* this is important because as a singer, his voice is what defines him. a symbol of his identity, if you will. it could be interpreted as them sacrificing their real voice and identity in order to please us. or the later half of bts festa 2022 where they’ve expressed their dilemmas when they are experiencing burn out. taehyung even said, “i’ve wanted to show the things that are inside me for a long time now. *_at some point, having these thoughts started to feel wrong. i became cautious in even mentioning the things i’ve wanted to try._* and it was hard to even say that i’m going to try it.” or when hobi said, _“so i hope you don’t see this as a negative thing.”,_ _“i hope you’ll understand”.)_
stans (and even the industry itself) have the tendency to feel entitled & therefore, demand such unnecessary things from them. things which *don’t* really lessen their musicality/artistry, other skills, and *worth.* they are being subjected to be stripped off their basic rights just for the entertainment & the audience’s attachment to them which we already know are harmful _(e.g., fans are very much enticed to fall in love with them but idols themselves are not allowed to fall in love or being frowned upon & lose support if ever they are involved in dating scandals or they themselves openly admit that someone else’s already own their heart & thus, they’re not available anymore which will crash the fantasies of delusional individuals out there and companies who profit from them being marketed as fans’ potential romantic partners/close friends/family i.e. parasocial relationships)._ but sometimes, things still need to be put into perspective. this visual presentation & social commentary is truly top tier that we all should learn from & be _more_ mindful of. otherwise, we would all collectively loose our minds without even knowing it. and just go back from “it is what it is” since such unhealthy perception & treatment has always been the norms - especially in the industry that people mostly often apply the “they’re just doing their job” notion & forgot that they are also human beings like us.
“i think the team at ador & hybe are VERY self aware of media and newjeans’ market. they know what people say about newjeans!! this is their first comeback and only 5 months since their debut & they’re already _challenging_ the industry and doing callbacks to their debut! a MASTERPIECE of a music video & the song is 10/10! i love the breaking of the 4th wall, i love how they called out their haters at the end of the video, i love hanni dressed as steve jobs. i mean, this video has it all: humor, weird/quirkyness, references, callbacks, serious topic(s), lore, introspection, thought-provoking...”
the only one i’ve experienced who goes with _this kind_ of depth, substance, socio-psychological commentaries and other related issues & therefore has that replay value _ever since_ day 1/debut, is bts. so experiencing the craft of newjeans: the concepts & rich message they’re going for so far is both nostalgic and refreshing in today’s era saturated of only aesthetically-focused content without that much of a substance. and the fact that they are doing both is chef’s kiss.
sorry if this is long-winded. i just can’t express enough how this is just so promising at all levels.
p.s. all the references i’ve mentioned that i personally find relatable to one another are just based on my background as a psych major, my prior exposure to k-pop culture, those similar patterns i’ve observed in how the industry works, and even just from individuals i’ve encountered/get to experience daily (how they turn their thoughts & emotions into art.) thanks for checking out new jeans!

This woman right here wrote a whole damn article and I love reading every single word in it! Reading to your interpretation, this got me thinking to always keep myself to be a good and supportive fan. Before NewJeans, like 5-6 years ago, even when I'm a fan of a certain k-pop group, I don't really want to interact with other fans because I don't like to see any negativity. The ones that NewJeans interpret here in their MV. I'm taking interest to them alone, with my own way, enjoy everything they did with their own charms, own way. I don't want a possibility to get involved with an 'obsessive' fans that think they have a hands over them. That judge them when their action doesn't suit 'the' way.
Now with NewJeans, after so many years I'm not in any fandom, I just find that they are really charming and unique. Sometimes watching their Phoning live, I realized there are so much emotions expressed other than them being an idol. Sometimes they are having maybe quite a day, sometimes they just wanted to chill, sometimes they just wanted to share something. And I love all of it. For the first time I tried to connect with other fans, other Bunnies, and I'm quite happy with the community. There are times where fans would raised concern if a member seems like having a bad day. But I really love it when there are also one of them be so realistic like "Hey, they are humans too. We will have a day that we just not feeling it". And it keeps giving me realization that NewJeans, while being idol is their career, but they are also humans that living in their own life. They appreciate us as a fan, as a friend. So, can we just appreciate them for who they really are?
Anyways, I'm not good in explaining my feelings and this has became so messy. What I want to say is, I love how they keep showing their uniqueness like "Hey, we are our own person" ❤

  • @ichig0tchi
    @ichig0tchi Год назад +14

    i just thought of a theory🤔
i think it’s about how idols sometimes get pigeonholed by fans, for example one idol says they like “x” food and fans make it their entire personality or how one idol does one thoughtful thing for another member and suddenly their whole identity becomes “the mom of the group” and how some idols let it get to their heads and start performing this ooc versions of themselves for fanservice’s sake.
like we see haerin thinking she’s a cat because everyone calls her cat or heesoo saying on a video that hyein’s princess disease is getting too much (some idols legit get full of themselves sometimes) and her believing she’s a princess from a fairy tale here.
basically ditto told fans to touch grass and omg tells idols to touch grass and not lose sight of who they really are just to play these roles for their fans

I feel like this mv and more like the hole concept till now (and I don't know the official explanation) is talking about how all the concept surrounding celebrities has to do with creating this illusion, this other reality that differs from the real person as much as you could compare with a delusional person but consciously and how the people the fans add to it almost making everyone start believing it and forms this alternative reality. I mean there is a saying that goes: the difference between and artist(of any kind of art) and a lunatic (not looking to offend anyone with that word is just like the say goes) is that the second one goes to this world of delusions and imagination and can't comeback and the first one goes and comes back to show us what is like there all the time.

Normally K-Pop MVs are easy (to very easy) consumable. For the dedicated listener (stan) and everybody else, too.
NEW JEANS last three MVs (Ditto A and B, OMG) are not easy consumable. They have multiple layers with very interpretable content and messages. This is art.
Everybody watching them starts to think about what he/she just saw, talk about them, interpret them in one or more ways. This is what only great art does.
When did the last painting, sculpture, ballet, theater, movie or K-pop video do this to you? Make you think and want to know more and talk about it so much?

I really liked your interpretation and everything you said, I think the same about them, they're creating their own life because their real life is too painful, that's why they created another identity (cat, doctor, idol, princess and iPhone). Identity's issues are a common issue because people use that to overcome awful situations and are too afraid to let go their created identity because in fact it was thanks to that they didn't die in the process... another masterpiece from NewJeans!

Again, NewJeans showed new Music and Messages~! You can find out what the theme of the MV is through the interview of the director Shin- Woo Seok who made of MV
. While working with the members), Director 'Shiin woo seok' learned how pure, clear, and free spirits they had, and This MV contains the concerns of producer Min Hee-jin and director Shin who are concerned that such things are suppressed and restricted by the evaluation and judgment of others.
This applies not only to NewJeans, but also to ordinary people who are judged by others and live to satisfy them. It's because if you're conscious of others, you're bound to experience a situation where you lose yourself. Hah!

I feel like the member believing they are different things represents what the fans see them as for example haerin is known in the fandom for resembling a cat for her cat eyes, hyein is known for her beauty and her modeling career minji as the oldest member she is like the stereotype mother and caring of the group so I think they represent how idols sort of try to become what their fans want them to become and sort of loose themselves on the way. As for Danielle She is maybe only identifying herself as an idol and is the only things she can think about.

They said "NewJeans" is a double entendre of a new pair of jeans and new genes. How about adding Neon Genesis Evangelion? Hideaki Anno's work on NGE appears to be an influence on the MV's meta commentary.

Hanni: This song is about you baby.
When I first heard that like, I'm thinking about this song is for the fandom to enjoy
But time and time, when I realize what actually the meaning of the line "This song is about you baby"
It's actually targeting the viewers to the extended degree that everyone is not okay.

Adore's CEO revealed at a press conference that they received a text from Bang Si-hyuk threatening them with an omg music video. If this is related to the cult-like religion circulating on the internet, it would be too easy to understand. Also, Ditto, OmG, ETA, and get up were all directed by the same person, and they all have interconnected content. It would be helpful to take note of this!

I think this MV is about 'perspective'
you can be a doctor who judge others with your own perspective, and sometimes you can be a patient who is judged by others with their own perspective. that's why 15:52 the doctor became the patient.

    • @JeusAlprime108
      @JeusAlprime108 Год назад

I actually see this as a reference to "Everything Everywhere All at Once" multiverse concept where each of them keep accessing to alternate parallel universe and get confused about who they are. And whenever Minji is the doctor, their male doctor substitute her place as a patient in that parallel universe. Apparently Ditto and Attention is one the universe they have access to as well. Similar for Kitty Kang in ditto access to her Kitty universe. And also Danielle who is the one has access into our reality in the fourth wall approach.

IMO, NWJNS follows the storytelling journey genre in K-pop. Actually, this is not a novel concept in K-pop, but still, it is fresh and fun because this is the first time the idea was produced for teenage girl group rookies. The concept was commonly used for a more mature and professional group that already reach significant popularity in the industry.
A decade ago, IU comes with the idea of a musical journey through the ages. Remember the songs and MV of “Twenty-three” (23) then “Palette” (25) and “Eight” (28). Many things happened within the videos, with symbols and characters, all related to the lyrics. And it is not surprising if they are connected to each other with earlier MV of another song that initially looks like has a different theme, e.g., time-traveling “Above the Time” etc. Then ten years after, IU releases the final MV that recap all the stories behind musical journeys of her 20s.
Another concept is Red Velvet. Since its debut, they proposed one consistent theme for the music, it was a series of festivals (of life). Every comeback they always had a different performance concept, and music vibes, but everything was always connected to the Festival theme. And then “AESPA”, the first girl group who lives in “KWANGYA” and “COSMOS” the fantasy world created by SM Entertainment - later called the “SMCU”.
Retake a look at all of NWJNS MV's since the beginning - the “Attention” then slowly connect all the red dots of the original concept of New Jeans that was “the life of high school teenage Queen”.

Great reaction and analysis. IMO, OMG is foreseeing NewJeans members in the future having mental breakdowns and being institutionalized from their traumatic experiences as Kpop Idols. Yeah, tragic. OMG is a huge meta statement about the parasocial potentially toxic relationship between Kpop Idols and their fans, but from the Kpop Idol perspective. Ditto is about the same parasocial potentially toxic/potentially beneficial relationship, but from the fan perspective. You can see that the 2 mv's are related from the Ditto video dance clips (not just the cat) shown on the OMG video. In OMG NewJeans members are being treated after having mental breakdowns from being Kpop Idols. Hanni (as Siri/Steve Jobs with round glasses, black t-shirt and jeans and sneakers) is crying for help, saying that she has lost her sense of self, that she only exists for her fans and to fulfil the needs of those fans (like Kpop idols are want to do, not just iPhones). Harein thinks she is a cat, becoming what her fandom thinks about her in real life (that she is the living embodiment of a cat). Harein is seen nibling on cat food. Heyein is the member with the most entertainment industry experience, having been a busy child actress and here she is lost in the fairytale of one of her early roles (being lost in how her fans think of her). Minji is the Unnie (the actual oldest member who has a clear role to play in any Kpop Idol group), trying to take care of her members and bringing them to be treated (fulfilling the Unnie role that her fans expect from her). Note that at one point in the video, she stands over HERSELF, and brings herself into the ambulance, and obviously needs treatment too as she has also lost her sense of self and is lost in her fan created role. Only Danielle can remember that they are members of NewJeans, but she is institutionalized too, suffering mental issues, but not to the point of losing her memories. You said, she thought she was in NewJeans. No, she really is in Danielle from NewJean, but she is imagining that she is still shooting music videos. She is imagining the crew is there. BTW, the Bear represents the fandom. Potentially very protective like a moma bear, but also potentially vicious and ferocious and deadly (as toxic Kpop netizens are want to be).

Here is a few mystery things I picked up on from this video and going back to the Ditto video. There seems to be some connection to Hesso (girl from Ditto video) and Hanni. They are the only ones wearing black in the Ditto video. Hanni also seems to do the opposite thing from the rest of the group in that video as well. In this video, at the beginning when Hanni said she was an iPhone, she says “Hesso please answer the call”. ..and in the Ditto video we see Hesso crying in a corner ignoring a call. A member in this video thinks she is a cat …that same cat was in the Ditto video and we see Hanni (I think) talking to it like it was a person. At the end of this video we see footage from their video Attention, and it glitches in the bathtub scene like it glitched in the Ditto video. There is many more things to mention .. but it’s fun trying to puzzle this all out.

Haha, nice! You recognized Mr. Lee (from "It's Okay To Not Be Okay", actor Kim Joo Heon)! 👍My theory is, that he is the "real" patient btw. 😅Loved the gags, references, twists, "meta"-commentary and 4th-wall breaking in this one. Big thumbs up from me! The current wave of "(monster) rookie groups" really feels like a "shift" (or "evolution") in K-Pop for me. They all have very distinct concepts different from each other (see IVE, New Jeans, Le Sserafim, NMIXX, Billlie or CSR for examples) bringing a lot of nuanced ideas and fresh wind into K-Pop. Even though New Jeans songs usually are not really for me, I'm still looking forward to every new release because of the creativity for their music videos. I'm still not a fan off the amount of minors at a very young age we have in these groups, but nobody can deny the variety, creativity (and talent) in and behind these groups. It's a good time for K-Pop and especially girl group fans :)

I loved your genuine take and I agree with everything you've said but I wanted to comment a little on Hanni's part (the iPhone girl) because I think it's the most "controversial" of all besides the ending and everything else haha, but in a good way.
Some people have been pointing out similarities to the movie "I'm a cyborg, but that's okay" which was a pretty big deal in Korea, this movie is basically about a girl who thinks she's a cyborg because she was struggling to find her purpose in life and admired the way technological things are created for a reason so she wanted to be one.
Maybe the iPhone part was about finding yourself and what people can do when they can't do that? like an identity crisis or something.
