Total Recall did end up very slightly edging out Die Hard 2 as the action movie of the summer, but Ghost ending up destroying them both as the number one hit of the summer and second biggest hit of the year after Home Alone. Macauley Culkin ended up being the top action hero of 1990.
No one saw Ghost or Home Alone coming. They were both fairly modestly budgeted films, but they ended up out grossing the much more expensive Total Recall, Die Hard II, Dick Tracy and even Back to the Future Part III. It happens every so often. Look at this year... I doubt Hollywood would have predicted Barbie, Super Mario and Oppenheimer (which were in the $100M range) would have significantly out-performed Mission: Impossible, Indianna Jones and The Flash (all between $200M/$300M) but as William Goldman once said "Nobody knows anything". At least those big budget films of 1990 did ultimately make some money.
In 1990 people have seen in cinemas: Home Alone, The silence of the Lambs, Pretty woman, Back to the future 3, Ghost, Goodfellas, Die Hard 2, Godfather 3, Dances with Wolves, Nikita. In 1990 Hollywood was in great shape. One of the best Arnold's movie "Total Recall" looks like pretty average decent movie at this time(!!!).
@@georgieramone Commando made my list as well but Total Recall is my personal number 1, always. That soundtrack and those quotes. Does anyone else have a soft spot for Eraser? Haha
this is the cusp of him really changing, and letting fame get to his head, unfortunately - still some of his old lesser-english phrasings leaking through too, cute! before this I don't think he had a real sense of how big his big really was
He was just coming off Twins which was by far his biggest box office hit up to this point. Although I would guess by now the home video numbers on his earlier movies had also gotten huge. Total Recall was his highest budget movie by at least double up to this point. It would become his highest-grossing movie that year. Then Kindergarten Cop did almost the same business as Twins, becoming his third-highest grossing movie. Which set him up as the biggest box office star around leading into Terminator 2, which only shot him into the stratosphere. But that's where he peaked as Last Action Hero came next and fizzled out. The next ten years were very uneven with missteps like Junior and Batman & Robin and only a few sizable hits like True Lies and Eraser.
Yes jedi,,his selection of movies was perfect, up to the mid 90s, the films he should have done, but didn't happen, for some reason, instead of last action heroe,he should have the new version of Planet of the Apes, mouthing like the one that came out,but it was going to be a Gladiator against the Apes type of film, then if he followed that with twins 2 ,/ Terminator three/, another sci fi film/ true lies two/ thes would have kept him at the top,
It's a sort of tragedy for cinema that Crusades was never made. It still feels odd that Schwarzenegger and Verhoeven never made another film together ; they were a great team! Who knows what else they could have done, but I guess the death of Carolco put the kibosh on any future plans they may have had.@@seanstewart6893
One of my favorite Arnold films.
it's like his shirt from The Running Man

Total Recall was made short before Terminator 2.
That's right .
order of greatness of Arnold's movies:
Conan the Barbarian
Predator
Total Recall
The Running Man
Terminator
Terminator 2
True Lies
For me...
Predator
Total Recall
Running Man
T2
Terminator
Commando
Commando, predator, pumping iron
@@georgieramone Commando made my list as well but Total Recall is my personal number 1, always. That soundtrack and those quotes. Does anyone else have a soft spot for Eraser? Haha
For me...
The Terminator
Terminator 2:Judgment Day
Total Recall
True Lies
Eraser
Commando
Predator
The Running Man
Red Heat
This is the only order: Predator, The Terminator, Commando. After that, do whatever you want, the top 3 can't be changed.
Funny hearing him on BTF somehow, and people kinda loosing their cool at the parties, .....grounded guy, relativizing it all a bit.
Same year as kindergarten cop
Have you forgotten Arnie's native German yet?/
