In contrast to Paul, Ash values his Pokémon and doesn't just depend on sheer power, despite their delicate looks. Paul regards his Pokémon as mere tools and derides those that are weak, lack powerful moves, appear feminine, or are simply not strong enough. Ash, while not without his faults, sincerely cares for his Pokémon and treats them as companions. Indeed, Paul battles fiercely and with aggression, but true mastery requires more than Pokémon that merely look strong.
Couldn't agree more, both Paul and Sasuke treat their companions like tools for battle rather than a friend, and they don't care whenever they got hurt or injured.
The thing about Paul is he rarely does anything without a plan (which is one of the ways he's so different from Ash). He only challenged Brandon because he couldn't believe someone like Ash would stand a chance against the pyramid king, let alone win. Paul's team was prepared for his gym battle with Candice. I would've liked to see Paul at his best.

if Paul truly wanted to know how Ash survived with Brandon at all, he took his time with it and fought valiantly with great honor and respect for Pokemon
The thing that makes this so great is that Paul purposely made nade things aa hard as he could for himself because he was that sure he could beat Brandon. But we see the readon gym leaders and frontier brains can’t switch in this match. It would make things way too tough for a trainer if they could. So Paul’s hubris really got the better of him in his rush to do better than Reggie and Ash. If he had asked Ash for more details on how he won he would’ve learned how tough Brandon is.

@@RiruKrypto_ Both Regice and Regirock are usable in the competitive singles format of Gen 3, even if they are not really that amazing, they are legit options to use in the tier for certain kind of teams. Registeel is a bit less optimal, though.

Magmar and Lairon are more than enough for Regice, Nidoking is definitely enough for either Regirock or Registeel, much less Hariyama as well as that being a strong counter for Regice as well. The only real "weak links" are Ursaring and Electabuzz. Depending on the moves they have though it helps.

Honestly, with Paul's power-obsessed mindset, it would probably be a close match since he seemed to care only about how strong they were rather than forming a cohesive strategy. Paul's mons are strong but a Regi can hold its own. Rock vs Hariyama could be Shock Wave & Hammer Arm. I honestly think it'd be an even match. Brandon would just keep switching for a type and move advantage. Kind of like how you beat Blue because his mon were only based on power and nothing more. You could easily find a few weak points.
The bear hug (0:16) and counter (0:23) is what makes me see Regirock as a Rock/Fighting type (along with his its big, rocky build). Geodude, Graveler, Regirock and Midnight Lycanroc really ought to be Rock/Fighting Pokemon.

This demonstrates the difference between a gym leader and a frontier brain. While gym leaders are supposed to challenge trainers, they also have the job of helping think in new ways; they're as much teachers as they are challenges. You might say the journey are lessons, and the gym leaders are tests which would make gym badges the passing grade. But Frontier Brains got into battles with a goal of nothing less than a 100% victory. They use every trick at their disposal and don't know the meaning of the word mercy.
