When I first watched Sex Education and seeing the "flamboyant, black, gay best friend", I was halfway expecting him to be a badly written stereotype. And he kinda is a stereotype, but it's done in the best way possible that subverted all of my expectations. I anticipated and enjoyed every moment he's on screen, his character arc and development, his semi-toxic-but-also-not romance with his bully, EVERYTHING. I absolutely love him. Also, can I applaud how intimate Eric and Otis friendship is, despite Eric being gay? Otis doesn't assume Eric likes him just because of his sexuality. He doesn't care about being around him all the time and dancing with him, because it doesn't effect his views on his own masculinity. I wish men could be intimate with each other (platonically ofc) without worrying being called gay or feeling emasculated.

I love that prom scene moment between Otis and Eric it's so cute and shows a real true friendship. I love their friendship so much. And I love how Otis didn't care whether people would call him gay or think he was gay because he was dancing with Eric. He was just happy dancing with his friend.

What's the best part about Eric? His whole character is a subversion of the typical gay best friend trope we commonly see in romcoms. It's refreshing to because even though Eric is the best friend, his entire world doesn't revolve around Otis (since in romcoms the best friend's role is always to be there for the protagonist). We get to see his own problems and watch him grow from them. That's why I really love Eric's character in general. The writers of this show have done a fantastic job in not making him a stereotype and actually making him funny, fleshed-out and relatable to its gay audiences.
his storyline in the first season where he finds his confidence in himself and his dad finally accepts him was TRULY my favorite part of the entire season. i love how they didnt make him enter any sort of love triangle/love story until AFTER he had grown as a character, while i feel like a lot of times stories will make the character’s development be moved along by a significant other, which is such an unhealthy way to look at it. plus the diversity in the entire show both racially and lgbtq+-wise is *chefs kiss*
Same with a lot of the characters in that we see their stories more and get to experience how they act and feel in their own heads it's really refreshing how they represent this stuff and are able to connect the whole thing and not have it be like repetitive of stereotypical writing. I love this show so much and just holy cow it's so good. Aimee is my favorite character hands down just because she's dense but the sweetest and she deserves the world lmao. I love her relationship with Maeve too they're like such a well written friendship. The whole show is pretty well written which is phenomenal and jajdjjajs I'm getting carried away but yeah it's pretty e p i c
